What is D-Beat?
D-Beat is a Drum style made popular back in the early '80s that helped influence punk bands around the world which then a sub-genre of Punk was now born called D-Beat. The name D-Beat is known to come from the band Discharge when it was first heard on Discharge's EP's especially the "Why?" EP. A little known fact is one of the first recordings of D-Beat came from the band The Buzzcocks from a song called "Tear Me Up" where you can clearly hear the sound of "D-Beat" as well other references such as in the song "Helpless" by Diamond Head. There are several other influences that weren't mentioned and there are probably more that are unknown including Motorhead's Phil Taylor (Animal).
In this video, I break down 3 categories that I simply use to help me identify the types of D-Beat styles that are still played to this day and have evolved from their traditional style.
Thanks to your Requests & Suggestions I made these follow up videos:

I would also add Motorhead. Ace of Spades is the origin and influence of births hardcore and Discharge. We have to thank Phil Taylor for D-BEat and the standard double bass drum of hardcore, noisecore. grindcore, speed/thrash/death metal.
@DBeatDad
@DBeatDad 3 года назад
I would agree. Phil Is one of my main influences in the style I personally feel I put into D-Beat drumming I've done. I was just trying to keep it simple with the definition of the "D" for D-Beat. Anything could be argued, there's probably a band somewhere that likely played it even earlier and we don't even know yet! Thanks for watching.

Thank you so much for giving Philthy credit. Once he got his grubby little paws on a second bass drum at the tail end of '78 he pretty much laid the groundwork for ALL double bass kick styles, including the inspiration he gave to Discharge for D-Beat. Actually the D-beat (the original and extremely frequent old school hardcore beat) is played with evenly placed crash hits that pulse on the 4th-beats like a metronome in 4/4. So, 1st and 2nd crash is played on the kick and snare. 2nd and 3rd off-beat kicks (in 8th notes) are placed on each side of the 3rd crash and the 4th crash is played on the 4th quarter note (second time the snare is played). I've played with various HC bands in the 80s, sometimes drumming myself. I've also studied Garry Maloney's style for safety's sake before making this comment, and it checks out! Last but not least, I love your drumming! Thanks for uploading!

I find it quite interesting to learn there is a real technique to what sounds like a simple/primitive drumming style. I also think the most useful tip for anyone is just practice. Anyone can learn to do just about anything- we've seen quadriplegics paint beautiful paintings- it really is a matter of putting in the work. the kid who doesnt want to do his math homework is not going to get good grades on his math test- but the one who does, will.

Your fucking timing is sick, dude. Amazing work. I was hoping you'd play some Doom when you mentioned the Swedes. All in all, still impressive as shit. Subbed subbed subbed and liked. Hope you grow exponentially.

For those who like grind, the debut of regurgitate is a good example for very fast d-beat style too

Thank you! I had a very embarrassing moment yesterday at a jam. The bass player wrote a song and said that it’s supposed to be “d beat” I had no clue what he was talking about. We’re basically a skate punk band the best I use the most that seems very similar is what I call the “Smelly” beat. Basically the beat that NOFX has used for 30+ years

Nothing to be embarrassed about. You would be surprise how many people still don't know what D-Beat really is!
