What is D-Beat?
D-Beat is a Drum style made popular back in the early '80s that helped influence punk bands around the world which then a sub-genre of Punk was now born called D-Beat. The name D-Beat is known to come from the band Discharge when it was first heard on Discharge's EP's especially the "Why?" EP. A little known fact is one of the first recordings of D-Beat came from the band The Buzzcocks from a song called "Tear Me Up" where you can clearly hear the sound of "D-Beat" as well other references such as in the song "Helpless" by Diamond Head. There are several other influences that weren't mentioned and there are probably more that are unknown including Motorhead's Phil Taylor (Animal).
In this video, I break down 3 categories that I simply use to help me identify the types of D-Beat styles that are still played to this day and have evolved from their traditional style.
