My definition of "quick" might not fall in line with others. But I've got you know, things to say. I call these a "quickview" because it covers unboxing and initial testing. It does not speak to durability, longevity, etc.
This is the "quick" review of the new 1/10 crawler from FMS/RocHobby, whihc comes as an RTR. I have no idea if the version from FMS is at all different from the version from RocHobby. They look identical.

The part about your wife stopping to show an interest and ask specific thoughtful questions... that's really something special.

I couldn’t pass up the FMS fathers day deal. I picked up the 1/10 Atlas and get a free FMS 1/18 Toyota Hilux, and as someone who enjoys mini’s and micros I think it’s a definite win.

It's stripped down, because it's only 250 usd. You can tighten the front hinge screws and the body stays up. It's a decent truck for the price, and I enjoy it more than my Axials and Traxxas crawlers. It needs a 1080 badly though.

Wow! My previous comments were based on the general leanings of this channel, rock crawlers. I'm of the mindset that not all things marketed in this segment are meant to be true competition level crawlers and some really should be evaluated as trail trucks. Case in point; I recently built an Axial Early Bronco. Yeah, I spent a bit on upgrades, throwing out all the electronics, adding axle weight, wheels, tires, foams, radio, Fusion Pro, all new servos including one to activate the two speed, scale accessories, scale driver figure, custom bikini top, etc., etc.. And no, it's NOT a competition rock crawler. But, it looks cool AF, IMO, and performs very well for what it is, and what I wanted. Glad to see you diverging a bit, and recognizing that there are other avenues to enjoy in this hobby. 👍👍

I bought the 1/6 jeep a couple of years ago, here is a few things that will apply to your atlas....The axles are surprisingly good (they use them on several models) in two years I only broke one front prop shaft, fms/rochobby shocks are garbage, the transmission does have limited adjustability i.e. you CAN use different pinions (If memory serves 14,15,16) not much else, might go 14-18 I cant recall. Asiatees is your buddy for replacement parts. I am not sure about 'Cali, but where I am they are faster than amazon/ebay (also Asiatees has all the parts). I have been into r/c since 79' so having piles of goodies to throw on mine was pretty easy, tbh not much left except trans , rails , driveshafts. I just could not stop myself! I do think the potential is there around the 500 mark, but the mods I did to my willys excluding the stuff I fabbed I am probably in around 7ish? Also I have a spare set of alloy chubs and knuckles I can shoot your way if you are interested. Later

I think that body looks great, and would patina-up really well. That and a few popsicle sticks for wood grain in the back bed and it'll look great. Obviously stuff like gas cans and fire extinguishers are a bit more weight but they'd sell the scale look even more, as will lighting the lights. It seems like it's more a trailer than a crawler, but for my location that's absolutely fine--we don't have a lot of rocks. I'll have to throw it on the list of potential future rigs.

Nice, a cheap RTR quickview. That's awesome. This is the kind of stuff that is more in my budget, if I were to get another rig, rather than upgrade the ones I have. I'll do the latter before getting one of these though. :) The FMS/RocHobby/EazyRC stuff usually does really great when it comes to scale looks. This thing is only the second 10th scale they have done, and it uses the same chassis as the Mashigan (the Jeep hardbody that came before it). I think it looks pretty great, and on my calibrated monitors it's a really nice looking dark-ish orange (one of my favorite colors). Most of the FMS stuff is 18th and 12th scale, and most, if not all, look amazing and have pretty insane scale details and features, but are a bit (a lot) lacking in the performance department. Then there's the 24th scale FCX24 (your favorite scale), which performs great. I will continue to advise you to get yourself a small scale rig. If you ever get the chance, I have a few shorts of my built LCG SCX24 out, and it performs ridiculously well. I'm betting I'd be able to do a lot of the stuff in the Canyon with my best scx24. :D The Atlas performed quite a bit better than I had expected, and it's so cheap. Then again, you have the skills to make rigs do stuff they really shouldn't be able to. :D I think maybe the biggest issue with this one, and the Mashigan, is that they don't offer a lot in the way of upgrades. They do have some alloy upgrades for the axles, but I haven't seen any brass stuff yet. The same goes for their 18th and 12th scale stuff, which is a bit of a bummer.
@thindigital
@thindigital Год назад
24th scale stuff left me cold when I tried a stock scx24 but the fcx24 got me interested after seeing reviews on its excellent low speed and oilable shocks. So I got one and it's extremely impressive in that it moves like a 1/10 scale and has great low gearing. A Fcx24 in the canyon would have lines for lateral years!

To add the wood grain look to the tray without adding weight use strips of balsa, not everything is aimed at the hardcore crawler section, I have decent rock crawlers and pure trail rigs and even some that are pretty good at both. This as a trail truck should be fun to see

@28:15 Good approach aspect, some are new to the hobby. Someone seen me at local hobbytown seen me do initial climb and right away said his enduro couldn't do that. Again I've also had someone who comps say that thing won't work, not with that chassis.

Hummmmm, 1080 and Motor, Blue Case Amazon Servo and maybe the IROC'S or some Cut Canyon Trails? The stock shocks are Junk so that will take some work. I would also pull a upper front link since she has a Panhard Bar and try and work that situation out. I run my SCX24's with the shocks mounted straight to the frame and I can get some good flex with it but have to used Rubber bands for Shock Limiters with those Double Barrel Shocks I run on those. Of course a 24th Scale is a helluva lot different than a 10th Scale. Took me a bit to even warm up to the 24th stuff but my Daughter loves them and we can Crawl in the Winter time and go to Comps that are all held indoors, so that is a major plus, she is 15 and the more time I can get with her now the better. Kids grow up to fast. Anyway I am going to enjoy seeing with you do to this. 👍🏼🤙🏼

Oh man I just got done dealing with this chassis on the FMS/Rochobby Mashigan. I basically spent $300+ on a very nice body with and entire chassis/drivetrain to throw away. Electronics are no good, shocks are NOT shocks, they are springs and rods. axles have NO steering angle and it cannot be fixed. SOA with a 4 link and terrible geometry. and the short driveshaft from the trans to transfer WILL self destruct if you change the motor to anything better. and the Transmission is geared to high with no way to gear it down. My initial RTR drive was by far the worst experience ive had with ANY RTR. But I'll be damned if the body isn't beautiful!

The only experience I have with FMS is the FMS - FCX24 K5 Blazer 1/24 scale RTR. It has certainly proved itself a steering servo killer. I have only had my FCX24 for a little over 5 months & have gone threw eleven micro servo's, so far. I always properly set my steering servo endpoints but the week little micro servo's always burn up or strip gears. I have already spent more money in replacement servos than the cost of the vehicle. So yeah, I am not to fond of FMS in all honesty.
@CrawlerCanyon

I don't think the 1/24 stuff shares anything at all in common with the 1/10 stuff, but I get where you're coming from. The steering setup on the Atlas is nothing special or unusual typical bog-standard 3 link front with a wonky panhard, which is apparently becoming the industry standard.

The whole reason I returned my new atlas 1/10 was the terrible shocks and no towers, I don't know it just gave me a really bad taste when I seen that. Also the panhard mount concerned me from a durability standpoint
@CrawlerCanyon
@CrawlerCanyon Год назад
There are definitely some questionable decisions here, like the afterthought panhard. Fun fact, several people have told me that theirs arrived with 4-link front and CMS, no panhard at all. This thing was born (conceptually) as the Mashigan, and got cease-and-desisted into becoming the Atlas. I genuinely doubt that mine will live it's whole life in it's current configuration... mostly because I think the oddball gearbox won't survive. Still worth it for the look, IMO. Sacrifices for vanity.
@fishnrc294
@fishnrc294 Год назад
Running it was like bad sex your just glad it’s over 😂When it came out it caught my eye because it was 1:10 scale but it’s obviously not a quality crawler/ trail truck. The one thing that I couldn’t except was the lack of shock towers that blew my mind. I kind of like the color but I don’t think it’s worth upgrading a whole lot unless you just have a bunch of parts around. Definitely have to ditch the tires & motor/ esc just to be able to drive it. But I think the term RTR are correct it basically means it runs no mention of how well or for how long. The more you get into RC’s the more you see how bad even higher quality RTR’s are so it’s no wonder kits are the way to go for the seasoned builder. After you get a RTR to where you want it how much of the original is left!

I'd love to see a head to head with a Redcat Everest. I'm new to RC in general (August 2023) but I love my Slash and LOSI 22S drag truck. Crawlers look interesting... I don't mind spending $180-$250 to see if I like the category... If I DO, I'll dump more into it like everything else. But it's a fine line... if you get too junky an item...do you get a legit chance to enjoy the category? But at the same time i don't want to waste hundreds and then find out I don't like it. Only interested in 1/10 scale. Nothing else. So the Everest and Atlas are really my two choices right now.
@CrawlerCanyon
@CrawlerCanyon 6 месяцев назад
I feel like if you start with an Everest (or either of the Danchees) or the Atlas-- unless you're a hardcore tinkerer ready to work around the shortcomings of each vehicle, you're in for kind of a bad time. There's no other way to say it than 1/10th crawlers are expensive. Redcat tries to lure you in with a lower initial price point, but they are a horrific false economy, where the low initial cost is immediately replaced with hundreds of dollars spent just to bring it on-par with other rigs right out of the box. I got my Atlas to a point where it's pretty nice to drive (and real nice to look at) with what I would call a smaller amount of effort-- but I've fabricated parts for over 20 years. The capability out of the box is less than stellar, perhaps forgivable because again, it looks so good. The Atlas probably handles as well or better than the Axial CJ7 at less than half the cost. It's hard for me to recommend an RTR under $250 as the pickings are SOOO slim-- and I hesitate to say Axial UTB18 because while it's nowhere near 1/18th scale (it's around 50% larger than the 1/18th TRX-4m) because for another 50 bucks you can get an Element Enduro SE, which is the only RTR I give a soft pass to-- it's only drawback out of the box is a gawdaful speed control. If you're ready to spend $250 on an Atlas, I'd wait and put $300 on the Enduro. Or buy used. Anything from the Big Four will serve you great. Don't buy Redcat crawlers.
@TimMcVey
@TimMcVey 6 месяцев назад
@@CrawlerCanyon i don't mind tinkering. I probably enjoy that as much or more than driving them sometimes. I used to crew on dirt track stock cars (real cars) and loved getting dirty and turning wrenches. RC has giving me that fun, on a smaller/cheaper scale. I've upgraded my wife and my Slashes so much, I bought a few more parts and assembled a 3rd truck out of the leftover parts from previous upgrades. So we have a 3rd truck for friends (not yet into the hobby) to use when we take them to the track the next town over. The drag truck is just mine... easy to find dry pavement to run on closer to home. That's why crawling has noow got my interest. No track needed... don't NEED a track for SCT but it makes it more fun...
@CrawlerCanyon
@CrawlerCanyon 6 месяцев назад
@@TimMcVey then you might be just fine with the Atlas. The RTR electronics are junk (just like all RTR electronics) but the rest of it is decent. You'll want to fabricate shock towers so you can run 80mm shocks (the stock shocks are 70mm and bolt directly to the framerails) and the tires are... fair, at best.

@@CrawlerCanyon you know, with the SCA-1e Rover I just finished, I decided to try it in it's kit form to see how it is and it's not bad. At least when freshly built, the front end is pretty tight and there's not much "tossing around" of the front end as the servo does it's job, definitely not enough to have any perceived negative impact...I have a feeling that the rod ends and balls will "wear in," so we'll see how it holds up (I'm not holding my breath...I fabbed an AMS mount and have it standing by), but so far I've been shocked, because my past experience with CMS and 4 link wasn't good.

With your arbitrary $150 budget, 1080, tires, and servo will make it "better". That is, IF the stock shocks can accept oil and be made functional and not leak like sieves. Beyond that, good shocks, wheels, tires, low down weight, and a Fusion Pro (IF the gearing can be changed to accommodate the 2300), or the Fusion XE. Still, I have to ask why? There are better, more interesting vehicles that can be made pretty damn good for equal total money in upgrades. Again, pity. The FMS small scale stuff is actually pretty fun straight out of the box and with just a bit of aftermarket can be damn good indeed. And I really like their 1/6th scale Willys MB, for it's scale detail. This isn't a great 1/10th intro, IMO.

Could well be, but the Crusher is in a different category from the Atlas, AFAIC-- the Crusher has a 285mm wheelbase and the Atlas is 340mm. The Atlas is HUGE compared to the Crusher. In terms of price, the cheapest you're going to find the Crusher is around $280 from AliExpress, whereas I bought the Atlas domestically from HRP for $219 after a $30 store coupon. Is the Atlas perfect? Not remotely. I juts don't consider it as a competitor to the Crusher. Totally different thing.
@dankeplace
@dankeplace Год назад
@@CrawlerCanyon you are right, they're not in the same category, even though they use the same tire size, 1 is swb based and better for crawling due to its stance, it will go over things easier than a lwb. It also has better parts installed, better shocks that don't need replacing, also the central transfer case adds a set of reverse gears, then the driveshaft in the front and rear gearbox can rotate in opposite directions. This eliminates any body torque. You pay more for a better quality RTR, you get metal drive trains, aluminum pans, Hobby Wing WP-1060 60 amp ESC, not a 40 amp 2 in 1 design. By the time you have fitted the other out to be of the same quality, you have spent almost the same money, but you still do not have that same articulation of the rear suspension or the benefit of swb.

@@dankeplace You're going to have to go a real long way to sell me on the perceived advantages of a 285mm WB over a 340mm WB. Short wheelbase advantages: Better breakover, tighter turning circle Long wheelbase advantages: EVERYTHING else. As I said, the Atlas is far from perfect, but it's a fun rig. The Crusher is a 10.2 clone with lower-quality parts and a dead-end upgrade path. Neither the Crusher nor the Atlas are amazing performers, but they are toy cars that can be used to have a good time. You do pay more for more quality-- to a point. But the Atlas is priced pretty fairly for what it is, and the Crusher is overpriced now, as it always has been. Charging that money for a clone of a 10+ year old design? Meh.

@@CrawlerCanyon I don't need to sell you anything, I posted my OP with "I think", making it an "opinion". A clone with lower quality parts, how do you know, have you compared both? How do you know it's a dead end upgrade path when you can upgrade a ton, I have seen the extended wheel base mod, then the portal mod. You can also mod anything you want on this, so how is a dead end upgrade path? The Atlas and Crusher, I can get for almost the same $ here, the Atlas is $20 cheaper, so with my OP, it still stands. *as these are similarly priced, the 181 seems better value imo* That's why I posted what I did. Now if they brought out the 6X6, I would be interested.

Marginally better than toy grade. Pity. I really like the FMS FCX24. In the small scale stuff, IMO, with just wheels and tires they are better than my $400+ SCX24s.

Could we get a leaderboard of these cheap sub $300 rtrs?

1. Element Enduro Sendero SE 2. Element Gatekeeper RTR ...and I want to put the Utron in 3rd because it's effectively an IFS SE with (potentially) the world's ugliest RTR body. But I haven't driven one, so I can't say for sure. But honestly, I try to talk everyone out of buying RTR-- it doesn't really save any money in the end. Buy the Builder's Kit of your choice and outfit it. You will be happier with the completed truck, and have significantly fewer useless parts lying around.

@@CrawlerCanyon I get the kit thing because now I'm an enthusiast, happy to spend time on building and upgrading. I think there's a place for RTRs though, to get people into the hobby with as little hassle as possible. I've met a bunch of people on trails who express an interest in the hobby and it's good to point them at a well performing rtr rather than explain that the best way to go is build from scratch and it's gonna be about $500 and a whole thing I used to recommend the trx4 sport ....

Yeah. They are 100% some flavor of the ubiquitous Super Swamper Rocks Tyre Hyrax clones. I haven't gotten into them yet, so I can't tell who isn't being compliant: the tire, the foam, or both.

Running? You can probably get it running for less. But like, halfway decent? I don't think you can put a reasonably-performing Phoenix on the rocks, shopping economically, for less than $700.

In comparison... The RGT Crusher with a very similar body style and price point knocks it out of the park as a RTR. This thing is just plain disappointing and seems more toyish than I expected.

RGT is effectively non-existent in the US. The Atlas and the Crusher look like similar takes on the same idea-- but the RGT is roughly the size of a Carisma Coyote, while the Atlas is the size of a TRX-4 Defender.
