Im sure that's a Allison V12 in the yak-9 not the original Klimov VK-107.

The engine in the Mustang was a american built Rolls Royce Merlin by Packard. The Merlin started out at a mere 1000Hp but ended up at 1700hp approximately. The Griffon was a enterily new engine.

Those engines do not have the propeller bolted direct....there is indeed a reduction gearbox between the two

In the clip of the Mitsubishi you say that the war started and ended with this plane which I presume is a reference to Pearl Harbor , if so you should check your history books because the war had been going on for over two years before Pearl Harbor and America entering the war.

Your captions are miserable. All of these engines make their horsepower rating at low rpm. In reality they're extremely powerful because of the torque required to make that power at that low rpm. Look it up. Can the comparisons based on horsepower per liter. They're ignorant.

You didn't show a RR Griffon engine, only two versions of the Merlin. Griffons have a left arc propeller rotation.

Pity you mixed your Spitfires. The second one has the Merlin, the first the Gryphon. Nice try, no coconut.
@carlvogt6162
@carlvogt6162 4 года назад
both of them got the Merlin. Griffon powered Spits got other cowlings and the engine turns anti-clockwise
@vipertwenty249
@vipertwenty249 3 года назад
@Dale Vann No not all of them. The Spitfire Mk12 had a 4 blade prop and was optimised for low to medium altitude, the Spitfire 14 had a 5 blade prop, the later Shackleton maritime reconnaisance aircraft had four Griffon engines each with 6 blade contraprops. Development over time.

Theres a couple RU-vid videos that touch on the DB engine power output. From memory one point is the fact that the Germans didnt have the same higher octane fuel as the Allies.
@Maxfahrer
@Maxfahrer 4 года назад
Liam Boyle exactly, Germany used mostly 85 octane fuel. Correct me if I’m wrong

I don't know about Military planes but the DC-7s with Wright R-3350s, 18 cylinders, 3400 HP for takeoff, used 115/145 fuel. Purple gas we called it.

Aircraft Engines were not pushed to the limits - they have to be -repeat: have to be - reliable - especial in warbirds - and todays sports Aircraft also have Engines not pushed too far - for understandable safety reasons

No the Sakae was not a crap angine. It was an early war engine and its power output was typical of simlar engines designed at the same time. Comparing it with later engines is never relevant as inevitably it would end up becoming obsolete - that's like comparing the Pratt & Witney R2800 with a Rolls Royce Nene and saying the Pratt & Witney is crap. The Sakae could run exceptionally lean, which was a feature other engines of its kind could not do to anything like the same extent, so it gave the Zero a range other naval fighters could not hope to equal at that time. The Zero was fast for its time and highly manouverable, but to save weight it lacked the armour protection of American fighters designed later than it was and paid the price for that. When considering the relative merits of historical equipment, considering things in proper context and taking a balanced view is helpful to forming a good understanding of the challenges and losses allied pilots faced. To belittle the opposition is to belittle the achievment of our servicemen in overcoming them.
