Had a really interesting group of coins come from a PCGS submission that I teamed up with Gary from @worldclasscoins on Instagram and worldclasscoin... to do a video on. A lot of learning can be done here, and I spoke with Gary in a 4 or 5 minute brief interview to get his thoughts on the submission before we opened the coins up. The Morgan previously graded a MS67 and the goal is to get it to a MS68, while some of the others are very likely to be artificially toned - time will tell what results we will get.

Kudos to Pcgs for not rewarding this attempt 👍 My thought is that it was a mistake to throw the artificial toned coins in with the genuine ones

Thank you for making a video like this with physical coin examples!! Sometimes it is hard for me to tell via photos! I love all of your videos! Very interesting to send a coin in to be graded, then resubmit the same coin again. It is almost luck. Depending on who grades the coin.

I wonder if submitting them all together changed how they were graded.

I'd imagine submitting that screaming pink fake tone coin alongside all these other questionable monsters didn't help ease suspicions.

Some beautiful coins.. I've seen some artificially toned coins that are much nicer than naturally toned coins and visa versa. Sometimes I think what it's worth is in the eye of the beholder.

Even if the toning is determined to be artificial why can’t they still grade the coin based on condition regardless. It seems like they could still put an actual grade on the coin with a questionable designation. 🤔

Because the coins been deemed tampered with or at least possibly so (hence QUESTIONABLE color. They’re not saying Art Toned because it’s iffy) Third party unbiased Grading was built for the site unseen market, and to be “market makers”. Meaning if you buy an MS65 and pay Grey sheet 65 money you should have a reasonable idea of what you’re getting An MS65 artificially toned coin won’t be worth anywhere near the value of a problem free one When you look at PCGS price guide you wouldn’t pay the same price for a problem coin that you would for one deemed to have a problem Also quest color coins are prone to turn over time .. the color you see today could be ugly or black in a short period of time . Not knowing the chemical change that was used to tweak the composition Myriad factors

I have a 1969 S penny that I believe has a double earlobe and some DD though it is not the major DDO it was in a proof set I had my things in a cart it was a hot day and I decided to go to the store when I looked at my proof sets a week later all 8 of them had turned yellow so I took them out of the sets some of the coins didn't seem to be yellow but most of them did, but my 1969 S penny was purple around the edges and a little more it was green inside of the purple and yellow in the middle. I thought I would use some drops of collected dew that was on the end of some grass blades to get a little bit of dirt off that I got in the coin when I did so the drop of water ran down from the middle washing the green and purple away as it went, so I knew that it would be considered PVC damage so I took two molded pennies , I put one on each side and placed them on the ground in some green grass. I left them there for about a week then I got them and looked at my 1969 penny it did not seem to have any PVC on it but it is a bit rough though oh yeah I had let it get mold and then I had used more dew drops to get the mold off

sometimes a coin may have a soapy residue that gives it that blotchy toning that I have resently discovered on some of my coins that I have dipped in E-Z-est. Anyway I think some of those coins are valuable because of the colors they are. I know there's a market for these toned coins

The 82-S Morg that was MS 67 had to be a $1,000.00 coin. Pretty risky busting it out of the holder and re submitting it.

Kind of scary to submit a 67 looking for 68 and get questionable color instead. This also definitely brings in the call for having a number grade on these coins. There is a huge difference between a 67 questionable color and a 63 questionable color but they get the same pcgs grade. Just because there is some doubt as to the toning of a coin shouldn't absolve the company of grading the coin.

It was an interesting experience for sure - but it is quite tough to be perfect about coin grading.

Most of those were pretty obviously AT in my opinion, the Morgan dollar I believe is natural, possibly the 1937 blue-ish cent as well, but submitting them in a batch of clearly doctored coins made the grader skeptical of all of them most likely.

I think it is a good example of how (at least, I believe this) specific dealers do not get unfair/preferential treatment, though some disagree with me on that. Gary believes that it is real toning.

@@TreasureTownCoins I believe it is to. I feel that one is 100% natural toning. I don't even have 1% of doubt on that one and I have studied/looked at 1000's of toned coins, artificial and natural...

I have to wonder whether some of the coins influenced the grading on the other coins. I would if I am concerned about a coin's gradeability would mix it with other coins that I know would straight grade. But that's just my two cents worth of advice.

Copper is pretty easy to fire tone with heat. One of the Penny's looked heat toned because the color started on the edge.

The 1937 Lincoln Cent is original toning, I would say album toning since it is on the obverse and reverse, second guess would be it was an end coin from an old roll, I'm for sure it is NT though. I'm on the fence about the Morgan. The rest were definitely AT. I think they may have had graded a few of the AT's and decided they were all AT. Sending in NT's with known AT's will never be the best idea.

My favorite toning is rim toning, often caused by older NGC/ANACS slabs or Redfields, when the full rims on both sides get it. I also like old mint set toning. Bright full coin toning that looks like rainbow sherbet doesn't do it for me.

What? The 1882s was cracked out of a 67 holder? Probably didn't help resubmitting it with a bunch of obviously AT coins.
@COINTABLEChrisTisdale
@COINTABLEChrisTisdale 3 года назад
Very often, if they have any concern at all about a coin they use the "questionable color" as a cop out. Im specifically talking about the 82S Morgan. I think the 45 nickel is more likely just environmental issues versus questionable color. but again, they use that as a cop out. the 1927 cent is 100% artificial, and if it ever straight grades it will be a shame. I can literallly tell you how that cent was toned.
@COINTABLEChrisTisdale
@COINTABLEChrisTisdale 3 года назад
I was unclear..what I mean about the 1882 S Morgan is that they might look at that coin, and see something they are not sure if they like or not, having toning gives them a very quick excuse to just bag it. that said, if I had to bet my money on it, I would be there is something going on with the 82 S morgan. It for sure will never MS68. (outside of something shady goin on).

I honestly don't get why people pay a premium for toning. Like, yeah, they look nice, but at the end of the day, the coins are still in the same grade as if they weren't toned.

The only one that looked genuine was the 82s Morgan. Pretty silly to crackout a straight graded ms67, super rare to get a upgrade once it’s up in that range
@jadonnoble5621
@jadonnoble5621 3 года назад
Hi Tylonn! I was thinking the same thing. That makes no since to crack that coin out in MS67 holder! With that toning that coin would easily be worth over $1000 in MS 67. Now it’s maybe worth $100. Definitely not a smart decision.

The rim toning of the Morgan is 100% artificial. Unlike real rainbows, natural silver sulfide toning on Morgans doesn't start with red.

So little tip or insight for you if you send in a bunch or only toned coins and even 1 looks fishy they will be assumed to be fakes. much much harder on gradeing when its a group like that. i 100% know that to be a fact but a few people had to come look at those
