This guy operates out of a small town about 2.5 hours from where I am. I had him come and change a leaf spring for me while I was working, he was in and out in under an hour, had absolutely everything with him. I was blown away by that truck. True old school dude, excellent set up.

For the record, all Western Star trucks are built at the Portland, Oregon plant or at our plant in Cleveland, N.C. formally known as Freightliner Trucks. He replaced Mike's alternator so he could get some heat back in his cab. Mike had no heat in a Northern Ontario winter, not fun. Dave also found another problem that the dealer caused on a recent service and fixed that too. Thanks for helping my son Dave. He may be a big one but he is still my "little boy" LOL.

I do agree with him on the tag axle. 90% of the trucks you see in North America have their tag set forward of the drives. Most European and Japanese trucks will have the tag axle set back. Which makes way more sense to me. I want my drives set as forward as possible for tighter turner. Whether that be on a semi or a vocational truck. On a dump truck it would make more sense for the tag to be set forward because the majority of the weight is sitting dead center on the frame. But like he said for tow trucks it does make much more sense to have it set back leveling the frame and giving you more traction on your steer.

Many heavier rated European transports, and most construction vehicles, had dual steer axles also when we were there. Could always see a military convoy from miles away with all of the smoke. Don't have to worry about dawdlers in the monfort there either. The polizei will gift wrap your azz if one plays stupid games on their highways--
@thelegalteam653
@thelegalteam653 5 лет назад
I'd disagree, when you put the tag behind the drives it lifts some of the weight off the drives potentially reducing traction. Placing the axle forward helps distribute the weight but still keeps the drives loaded down

@@ccclc6159 this is only true on long nose trucks, idk guys run them for heavy haul, makes no sense other then the look of a long nose. On setback axle trucks, Like a t800 or this guys video of service truck, u can overload a set back axle very easily, triaxle heavy haul tractor or a dumptruck, I have 3 t800 tri axles and a w900 tandem , w900 loaded lowboy, front axle light all day, t800 king pin set just ahead of fwd tandem, you'll overload that front axle 23k lb no problem

The only reason I'd want the tag axle in front of the drive axles is for maintaining traction in uneven ground. I know this isn't a wrecker and he's probably not towing a huge amount of the time, and I'm not talking shit on this guy, he is the man to have on your side when the chips are down.
@0xsergy

yeah, to be fair most wreckers have the rear axles pretty far back so it'd be hard to put a tag axle behind like he says. for his axle layout the rear tag makes most sense.

20 plus years ago in nyc there was a mobile tech that had a 3 axel pete w sleeper. He was pulling a 2 axel refrigerated pup with a liftgate. He had parts on the driver side wall. Tool box in front. Torches etc It had a driver side slide platform with stairs. He had a jeep cj and a motorcycle with a basket in case he needed a parts run. They fit on the liftgate. He couldnt tow but did everything else. The climate control inside worked well. The straight truck in this video is the best of both worlds being able to tow in a pinch....wow.

Anyone who doesn't understand u have all that weight on tandems, then add a truck on the back, why would u put a fwd of drive tag axle? Rear pusher works for your set up. If u didn't have a tow set up, your rear axles should be farther back and your wanna take weight off front end with a setback axle setup. Fwd axle trucks, idk how they get and weigh up there, it's just a steer, hence a 12k axle over a 20k setback set up
