Considering how much abuse is thrown towards them in these videos, I'm shocked this hasn't happened sooner... and this was one of the more tame videos in terms of abuse posted on this channel. The sarcastic clapping of the red team and the constant whining of the red team's manager showed their lack of class as well. This isn't professional soccer and the AR who eventually snapped at the spectator, and doesn't look a day older than 16, is deserving of the same decency and respect that you would treat someone in public instead of the constant abuse that the supporters show. This kind of behaviour would get you fired or at minimum into the HR office at work, so why is it acceptable against minor sports officials in an amateur sport setting?

Man, people seriously believe they're entitled to say whatever they want to a referee without reprimand or consequence and that referees have to just absorb all of that. Oh don't get me wrong John, obviously the assistant was out of order for speaking back to a spectator like that. But it takes two to tango right? The bigger question in my mind is do these local leagues in this part of (I'm assuming) Canada not require clubs to appoint a person to reign in the spectators when they get too abusive? Just from experience in my part of Aus it works very well and the ref's still have someone to turn to in order to have spectators held accountable. Just food for thought I suppose@@johnchemo4248

You know, as a referee, this is cathartic. Luckily for me though, my league has a no tolerance policy where any spectators that swear at an official will be sent off and the match will halt until they either leave or are escorted off. Still doesn’t stop ridiculously bad takes on something the fan has no clue about, but it helps for sure. I’ve only had to send someone out once and they honestly needed to go just for their own blood pressure with how red their face was as they yelled.

So for people that are saying, "Just kick out the spectators", the referees do not have the power or authority over them. Should that AR have responded to the fan? No. But when that fan responded in a threatening tone "What did you say to me" OSA would view that as a direct threat to a match official. If the Ref, at any time, feels like the safety of their crew or the players is in question, they have they power to abandoned a match. With the video we see here, the Referee was in her right. You may agree or disagree, but the abuse to officials at all levels of soccer, whether it is Grassroots or League 1 has gone too far. That is the reason why no one becomes a Ref. Continue to yell at people that are there doing their jobs. I tell people all the time, if you think you can do it better, ill send you the link, and prove it.
@ribbonsofnight

This obviously is the worst case scenario for any referee - an assistant talking back to the crowd after low-level abuse and escalating the situation. Clearly AR2 is young and inexperienced, so as a referee our duty is to protect that official regardless of their decisions/actions. After all, he is a child under the eyes of the law, and so any abuse from anyone whatsoever falls under child abuse. In this case, it was pretty clear that regardless of any action taken (swapping sides of each AR, asking coach to remove the spectator, etc.), AR2 was going to walk away from this game. In other words, there was no other option from the centre referee other than to abandon the game. As a refereeing team you can’t continue the game because the child must come first to be protected from the moment they walk off that field. You never know what could have happened after this game, especially with how the crowd was acting. So unfortunately the referee made 100% the correct decision to abandon the game. AR2 cannot be put on another senior game until they gain more emotional experience (the offside calls weren’t bad, the only missed one was a flash lag scenario which are notoriously difficult to judge).

If violence was threatened by a spectator that is clearly an unsafe situation. Abandon the match, leave immediately, and file an incident report with the competition authority. If offensive, insulting, or abusive language is used by a spectator, pause the match, contact the site administrator and have them deal with it. If such language is used by a team official such as a coach, warn, caution, or send them off depending on severity. If there is no site administrator, this duty falls to the home head coach. If the home head coach refuses to deal with it, warn, caution, send off the coach for irresponsible behavior (not dealing with unruly fans). The only way to change someone else's behavior is through consequences. If coaches don't get sent off for not dealing with their sidelines, things will never change.

As a referee myself, I've had to deal spectators heckle at me and argue continuously throughout matches. To me, the AR did not handle the situation with the spectator correctly. At the max, should've just warned him to be removed from the area and banned from coming back as he should have his cards on hand with him to give a red if needed. You never give the fans attention, because if you talk about and try to defend yourself, that will just fuel the fire and give the spectators more of a reason to talk back and get in your head. Your focus as a referee is to regulate the game and stick to the line to watch for offsides. Although the center did make a fair decision in calling the game because of verbal abuse, the AR should learn to handle abuse and words from people or else this is going to continue happening for them.

I can understand the spectator's reaction to an extent when the match official tells them not to swear at him but then proceeds to swear at the spectator in the same breathe. Having said that, it does not mean you can react in a threatening manner. I'm reading a lot of people mentioning about ejecting the spectator and others commenting that they can't. Depending on the football/soccer association, it could be a viable option. I used to officiate in my local third tier, and asked the head of refereeing what the correct procedure would be following being constantly verbally abused by a spectator for majority of the game and the response I got was: 1. When you first hear these comments report them to the match referee, via your comms; (comms wouldn't be an option here as these officials don't seem to have them, but just report the comments to the match official verbally as the official did here) 2. Invite the referee to speak to a stewart or someone else in a position of responsibility, with a view asking the perpetrator to desist or even be removed from the ground; 3. If positive action is taken by the club, then that should be the end of matters; 4. However, if no positive action is taken, then ask the match referee to detail the matters on the match summary report in Comet. Now this is following my football associations code of conduct which includes a "Liability for Spectator Conduct", so I guess it really depends on this football/soccer association's disciplinary code.

As a ref there are clear issues on both counts. The players need to shut their mouths and play football. Simple. The level of disrespect to female referees is quite evident in this video. To carry on belittling the officials shows the childish level of maturity of some of the players, coaching staff and the spectators. The ref isn’t without fault here either. There is no problem with talking to players, but not as often as she did. Many opportunities are available on the run. In this incident the ref should have spoken to the AR and then punished coaching staff or players accordingly. Then continue play. I believe she controlled the game well but lacks experience in tough situations. The problem with leagues in many countries is that they throw young officials straight into the fire without adequate mentorship. I wouldn’t have abandoned the game.
@kyal
@kyal 7 месяцев назад
I definitely agree, but this is a tricky scenario. If AR2 refuses to continue even if the spectator is removed (which was clearly his mentality at that point), I think that as a refereeing team we are obligated to abandon the match. AR2 is clearly young/underage so if he walks off the game he needs protection from the moment of the incident until he gets home. If he feels threatened and abused by the spectators, we have to remove and protect him from that situation. If that means abandoning the match, so be it. I would hate for the game to continue without AR2 and for him to be attacked in the car park or in the dressing room. You never know what could happen.

We can't win... either we are making the game about 'us' or letting it get out of control. How about player ls and coaches control their own behavior???? Many people don't want to 'have to' put up with the abuse another, just to make a few bucks.

With all due respect, the referee is very professional and is earning the players respect by taking control of the match. Unfortunately female officials sometimes start behind because males have a hard time listening and taking direction from females. In my opinion, as a Grade 7 Referee in Ontario/accessor, she earns an above average mark for her work on the pitch. AR2, he probably just had enough of the abuse and lost his composure. He should have never have used foul language towards the spectator (or anyone) But, he is young and probably still learning. Unfortunately I think this is becoming more and more normal every year. Remember, without a referee it is just recess…

@@kevinh7947 The ref is using the incorrect approach. Too formal and strict. As I said. That’s why it didn’t work. If anything female refs get much more respect. I am a referee observer and a referee since 10 years. You don’t ref a game like this as if you are dealing with gentlemen that will listen to strict lines and formal body language. These refs are a disgrace and I am not talking about the (several) mistakes they made through the game. Their job is to officiate the pitch, not talk with or about the fans. Now, I do not agree with fans (or anyone for that matter) abusing the AR, even though what I have heard in the video (probably not everything, admittedly) barely qualifies for abuse. But if you want to be a referee in any type of game will involve some abuse thrown at you. You shut down the one you are responsible for and shut out the one you are not and that is it. If every ref that got called a name or two left the game, no football game in Greece (and I mean every single league from the top to the bottom and even kids' leagues) would ever end properly. Hell, we "abuse" refs in 5v5 friendly matches... They most usually laught it off...

@@SwaggyP12243Actually yes they do. It has happened in at least 3 cases that I know of. In two of them the fans were evacuated. In the third some fans refused to leave and the match was ended and the team nearly relegated. But they do indeed have to have a very good reason to do this. Getting heckled for your decisions is not a valid reason.

@DeDreiko, I agree 100%. Fan said "how the F is that offside" and the ref started yelling at the fans. Totally unprofessional. Refs are not supposed to interact with fans. If he can't handle that then he should not be out there. If he things get out of hand, then he should go to the coaches. This is one of the biggest problems in soccer today. Refs are way too thin skinned and leagues are allowing/encouraging/teaching them to be. Teach officials to ignore what the fans are saying. Teach them to manage the players and coaches.
