Hello The Way We Wore Fans,
We are so happy you enjoyed our last episode with Dita, we are working on more interviews with special guests for future episodes. In today's video Doris' showcases bakelite jewelry, which she recently acquired. This collection of bakelite is absoulutly amazing, carved bangles, novelty brooches, a Bakelite heart featured on Life Magazine, and so much more.
Bakelite is a synthetic based plastic that was created by Leo Bankeland in 1907. This plastic was used for all sorts of products for cars to billiard balls. In the teens and 20s fashion (costume) jewelry became more available and designers used Bakelite to imitate fine jewelry. It was a product that helped feed fashion for the mass market and has now become collectable.

I love the way Doris speaks; very warm and calm. This channel should be a mandatory resource for fashion students to study.

You got that right! I am a lover of ballroom Fashion and Ballroom Culture, and Doris has presented garments that are so inspirational, and full of history. She teaches us things that we never know. And it’s topics that she speaks on that are very important to the younger audience of today. If you go into a target, you see such cheaply made clothes that will last you about three times through the washing machine. I love how she educates us on the importance of holding onto Culture that resides in these garments she shows us. It’s not just closing…. , it’s history And every piece of clothing can tell a story

I love Bakelite so much but I cannot afford it. So I have created a lot of bracelets that look like bakalit, using polymer clay! In fact I’ve done some with the deep carving that are really neat. I will look online for photos or on eBay and see some designs and then I can copy them and make them almost look like the real thing. Fun fun to do!

I love your videos very much becuase I love history, I love antiques, and I love to learn about something new. You and your videos are a fountain of knowledge ,and your passion is very evident, wonderful and inspiring to see and listen to. Also, you seem like a nice person who is inviting to the viewer. Bakelite is just captivating and I love the blast of colors and the shapes etc. I remember the film Agatha Christie's Evil Under the Sun which took place in the South of France in the 1930s. The women were wearing Bakelite jewelry and it was a feast for the eye of color. I think they really did a great job putting together the clothes and accessories of the 1930s.

Love the Video, Love the Store, Love Doris, still gonna have to disagree... I was holding back, but, it might be better to have a second opinion on this look. Baseball Cards are a perfect example. They aren't valuable because of the cardboard, or the ink, really not even the manufacturer or the method of manufacturing... it's Baseball Memorabilia. And the same holds true for WW2 Bakelite, or Cigarette Bakelite, it's not valuable because it's bakelite, it's not valuable because of how the bakelite came to be formed, it's WW2 Memorabilia, or Smoking Memorabilia. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and, Beauty, is ultimately, the ruler by which stand-alone Bakelite is valued.📏 So Says I🦊🚬

Not to change the subject but I am wondering, since you lived in San Francisco during the 70s, if you remember “ORIGINS” wearable art shop? I was fascinated with going there and seeing all the amazing wearable art. I forget the owners name but she was an amazing person and died too young. I am wondering if you take any one of a kind wearable art pieces from that time? I have a piece by John Marshall that was $7000 in her shop, but because I was also doing wearable art shows and fairs in San Francisco and new John Marshall was able to trade with him for that beautiful piece! I’ve never worn it because it is so wonderful and nowhere to go! It would be wonderful for you to do a program on wearable art especially during the 80s and 90s also. So glad to see that you have Recovered and I so appreciate your show because I am in love with all fabric and clothing from past times gone by.

The wearable art movement is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, art movements EVER. The stuff they created was out of this world. If you haven't watched it already there's an episode of "crafts in America" about it, it's really great, greatly recommend it 👌
