To Our Subscribers and Viewers,
We thank you for watching our videos on this channel and hope they give you some comfort during this time. We hope you are all safe and wish you and your loved ones well. During this time we will be doing more live streams on instagram (@thewaywewore) to extend the shop with all of its vintage treasures to you all.
Hello The Way We Wore Fans,
Who loves pearls? That question is redundant as pearls have been a style staple for centuries, and highly coveted by all. Wilma Flintstone, Aphrodite (the goddess of love), Cleopatra, Queen Elizabeth I, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Princess Diana are women who love a pearl piece of jewelry. The popularity of the pearl almost almost wiped out the entire world supply, as they were so highly coveted and farmed excessively. In 1893 Mikimoto created the cultured pearl, allowing this prized jewel to be more accessible.
It was upon entering the 20th century that pearls were used in costume jewelry. Chanel and Miriam Haskell used glass beads and coated them with a finish to give them a pearl-like glisten. Haskell's business opened in 1924, and it was became a tremendous success. All women wore Haskell pearls because of their design and hand crafted quality. Today Haskell pieces are highly collectable and sought after. We hope you enjoy this episode.
Be sure to check-out our website for new weekly listings; Doris never ceases to find the best of the best.
Follow us on Instagram at @thewaywewore for more photos, videos, and content surrounding the shop.

Pearls make every woman prettier. Of all the gemstones, they seem to flatter the most. They can be worn day or night, casual or dressy, and elevate any look. When I was a young girl someone gave me an add-a-pearl necklace and each year another tiny pearl was added. Somehow over the years I lost that sweet necklace! In any case, today I have a lovely one that’s a staple in my wardrobe. It’s only a single strand but of fine quality and the right size for my features. When I drape it around my neck and look in the mirror, I’m always reminded of how flattering pearls are.

Hello!!! I LOVE my pearls. I’m from Mississippi and my grandmother bought me my first strand. Then my mother bought my daughter her first strand (at birth with a gold ring with a tiny diamond). She had her first photos taken (almost 3 months old) wearing bloomers with laced edging and her jewelry.

Another interesting and informative video, thank you Doris! This may be an odd request, but would you ever consider doing a video about sequins/featuring heavily sequined garments? Lately I've been obsessed with them and have been hand stitching them on to just about everything lately, I'm just obsessed with the sparkle. Unfortunately though, I rarely see them worn. I was wondering if you might have any interesting sequin pieces in your collection, and if you do I'd love to see and learn more about them!

Its crazy,or I am just getting old. Lol as a teenager ( I am now 49) my mother and me use to find Haskell, Trafari,Coro aplenty in the thrift stores in the late 80s. I was the ood girl out at school because you would often find me wearing that jewelry. I loved it! I would even wrap long strings of Pearl's around my ankle with sandals, tshirt and shorts. Thank you for the segment.

Fashion and jewelry is the best non-fattening way to ease my stress, so I thank Doris and company so much for continuing to make content for The Way We Wore. Maybe do a semi-precious stones theme in costume jewelry? Marcasite jewelry (usually in art deco designs) is one of my favorites, but onyx, malachite, jade and chalcedony are also great visuals for jewelry themes.

Thank you again for another delightful interlude where reality is suspended and we get to listen to your delightful voice and all the wonderful information and passion that you have to share. I collect vintage handbags, 30s-80s,very structured and classic and although I don’t often wear them, they bring me absolute joy as I have them displayed in my walk-in closet (to keep them safe from light and temperature changes) for my own enjoyment. I agree, if you are going to collect, you must love what you collect with a passion. Thank you (again) for all your time and effort in creating such excellent videos. Cheers

I have a great jewelry repair shop. They can handle the metal findings. I met and worked with Ms. Haskell as a young buyer in the seventies. She was warm and friendly but a bit scatty. Her brothers ran the business end of her company and they were major SOB’s, if you see it in the showroom can you imagine what it must be like in the office? And I got my Haskell’s free.( can’t do that today.) You can go on eBay and type in costume jewelry NOS, new old stock, or just findings. A fun way to shop in isolation. But buyer beware. You want it to ship from Rhode Island.

Oh, this was my favourite episode so far! I have a very old ornate Haskell brooch but a tiny bead fell off. Now I know why- it was the brass wire that failed. My husband bought it for me from a NYC woman who worked in fashion beginning in the 1930's, and retired to the city I live in. in Wa. state. I have lost touch w. her, but she would now be in her 90's.

Ms. Haskel seemed to be a very savvy person . She ran her company on her terms ! The fact her shop was in a hotel is just such a smart thing to do ! There is something about a pearl that is captivating ! Elizabeth Taylors , Peragrina pearl had gone through three wars and a number of owners ! It survived . But her little dog found the pearl one afternoon , Tayor , Burton and a few friend were having lunch at home and the pearl came undone and fell off the necklace . Next, everyone is on their hands and knees looking on the floor for the pearl . Not in sight . One of the men hear a strange sound from under a cabinet , he looks ! Her little dog has got the pearl and does not want to give it back . Elizabeth Taylor got her pearl back from her pooch ! People will always notice you with a string of pearls ! Your so right about people putting the real jewellery in their vaults and wearing costume jewellery for everyday . I have talked with people over the decade who had pieces made to look like the real jewellery they had and put the original in a safe ! But at parties and events the real stuff came out ! As a kid I remember women at parties and weddings trying to out do one another with their jewels . Back in the 1960s head pieces were all the rave ! Hair pins with diamonds and gold and pearls , tiaras too ! The jewels were real . Sometimes a set opesrls is all you need to make a statement.

Haskell pieces are absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I enjoy your clips tremendously! I have myself a collection of almost 2,000 pieces of antique ethnic (mainly silver) jewelry from the Middle East, former Ottoman occupied Eastern Europe, Russia and Caucasian region, Iraq and Central Asia. A fine selection of this jewelry will be exhibited soon in a reputable German museum... Many world renowned designers and fashion houses are using the old ethnic jewelry designs in their designs. During my collection frenzy, I have already met fashion house owners who are sharing the same “addiction”...
