As they have been continuesly working on the carving of Crazy Horse since the mid 1930s there are frequently dynamite blasts to take large chuncks of rock off. Those rocks from the blasts you can take home. I got me one of those, pretty cool. I also took the busride to the foot of the monument which is a few miles in.

Really nice drive to the museum. I was surprised when you opened the museum doors, really large building, love the wood inside. Tons of history there, could spend hours. Heck of an endeavor on the mountain monument. TY. 😊👍

I was there in 1967 the 1st tine at 17 years old. No face yet and no hole under the arm but exciting to see. Ive been bsck to see it twice since then and will be there next summer at age 70! We take the bus tour and can see so much more of the majesty of this huge beautiful project. Amazing to see the 100's of thousands of tons of rock moved. Hope to see it several more times as well!

Was there 45yrs ago so disappointed ! At that time it was stated it would take 25yrs to finish. As I see this video tour it is to say it will never go any further at this point. So sad to see they never intended to finish this monument.. nice video thank you for sharing good details..

One of the best moments visiting USA in 1987 was when I was completely alone at the viewing area at Mount Rushmore at sunrise. I also went to see the Indian on his horse. The Crazy Horse visitors building was very very tiny when I was there. The road between Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse looks very much improved. In this day and age of mass tourism is not a good thing to go back to places you visited 30 prior. To me it looks like the parking area is bigger than the whole area in total in 1987.

I visited this place, great monument and all privately founded. Great way to honor the sacred land of the Native People. This is the real and only legitimate monument of the Black Hills. Please visit, it's worth it.
@davidmaclane5487
@davidmaclane5487 5 лет назад
Sacred land? The so called Sioux, first entered the Black Hills at around the time of the American revolution...1776... They fought with and drove out the Cheyenne who were living there, and later became allies with them in fighting the American Army. The Sioux, so called, never actually lived in the Black Hills, but perhaps took shelter in the foothills during cold Winters.

Thanks for the update on the construction. When you are leaving the museum there is (or was) a big plywood box full of rocks they bring down for tourists to take with them. Mt. Rushmore was ok but Crazy Horse? You have GOT to see it to believe it. I love the story behind it and how it continues today with the same family.

LOL, I was at the Crazy Horse monument some 25+ years ago now. Looks like little has changed with the monument itself, however, I see they've turned it into nothing more than a big tourist trap now. How many millions went into those building versus the monument itself. Thanks for saving me from ever going back. At the speed they are "working" on this monument, maybe my grandkids might see the finished monument.

C Crum I agree. Place seems like a tourist scam. I was also there 15 yrs ago and the mountain hasn’t changed. If they diverted the money from remodeling the gift shop and from trying to obtain all of the artifacts, the main attraction (the mountain)would be completed by now. Private donations hmmm. If you review the history of the Grand Canyon trail, sort of the same concept. “I’ll build it, the people will come and I will nickel and dime them.” An early American entrepreneurial mindset. It’s a mindful and historically meaningful monument, just wish it actually meant enough to the land owners to complete it.
@davidmaclane5487
@davidmaclane5487 5 лет назад
I am from The Black Hills, and work began on this carving in 1948...71 years ago, and everyone is resigned to the fact that this monument will never be completed....not even in another 100 years. It is a money making family venture, that has supported several generations....so why would they want to complete it? It only took 14 years total to carve Mt. Rushmore....Crazy Horse has taken 5 times that long, and look at the present state of completion. Now consider the fact that Crazy Horse himself would have probably been against this endeavor completely.

We were there a couple of years ago and enjoyed it much more than Rushmore. More to see, friendlier people in the shops, Indian displays and an Indian storyteller...it was great and we'll go back again. Rushmore was a one and done...but the drive underneath Rushmore was very scenic and interesting.

I went there 20 years ago. Monument looks the same. I felt a little cheated for the money but the museum is better now. But what else is there to do out there. Apparently two guys are actively working on the monument, but when I was there I couldn't see anyone. To tell you the truth, they will never finish. They are profitable doing this, whatever this is and people will pay the money to occupy an hour at the museum. Now go watch the movie thunderheart, hotels and shooting locations are all over that area.

One of the best areas for family vacation is the Black Hills. So many things to do. First went in 1976 and it was magic for me. Crazy Horse was pretty much just the flat area for the arm and small blast hole underneath. Took my kids in 1993 and my mom in 1995. Would love to go back and see the face finished.

I was there in 2004. It does not look like they have made any progress since then. That was 15 years ago! Even back then I thought it was a tourist scam. There is a display there that has the quote "My land is where my people are buried" Unfortunately the native Americans in that part of the world did not bury their dead. They where placed of platforms above ground. I don't actually think this whole place is run by native Americans at all.

Wow. I am impressed with the Crazy Horse museum in this video. Very big, beautiful, nice and clean. Not impressed with their crowds...nobody there. Didn't look like anyone was at the restaurant, neither. Does not surprise me. We've driven past that place each time we go to Mount Rushmore. No way were we going to pay that high price just to look at the monument from 2 miles away. First time we went there in 1990, they had barely started carving the mountain and they still were asking $$ just to drive into the parking lot. I think it's a wonderful project but it is too expensive for what you see. In fact, you can stop along the outside highway and take tons of photos of the monument for FREE. BTW: I don't even think they work on the mountain once a year. It will NEVER get finished.

Isn’t the crazy horse monument native land? No, all Private Custer trust land the money must flow or no rocks blow.; no wonder why it has taken over 70 years now with so very little to show for all the time and money for the project that now we find no native Americans want or who they wanted. No wonder it’s all on private land owned by the Custer trust I believe could be wrong on the trust part.
