@@ColoradoGoldCamp Like a Phosphorus burn. Strongly advising that you use those tongs just only to lift the crucible out to set it down, a guy used one like that to pour and the crucible broke where it was in contact and there was slag all over the place. Your literally playing with fire! Eh! Then use a different one, that 1/2 of it is a ring that it sits in, with the other 1/2 of the tong lays across the top of the crucible and when you squeeze the tong together it holds the crucible firmly in the ring. Use minimum 1/4 rod steel, the crazy heat quickly softens the steel. Where the rod joins the ring, weld 2 pieces at 30 to 40 degree angle to each side to beef the ring up, to handle the weight of a full big crucible, when it's white hot. If you want to continue to smelt large charges, SAFELY, build this tong, or get someone to build it, not tomorrow, next week, or soon, but TODAY. yOU can't do much when your feet/legs are hurt, Eh! 👀👅🧑‍🦽👣👣👣🌄☯😷

Very interesting. So you would have 2 plus ounces of gold from your store of 5000 lbs of black sands. Worth doing when it's snowing out and not much else going on. Have you got the company name/phone number or was that an experimental unit? Thanks for the video
@ColoradoGoldCamp
@ColoradoGoldCamp 2 года назад
Hi Kim! Hope you have been well! Let's see; Minus the waste blonde sands we have an estimated 4,000lbs of magnetics and non magnetic heavies. 2 tons of that material should yield 44.66 +- grams of "precious metals". I am guessing that roughly half of the PM's are gold. With these assumptions, I come up with .718 ounces of gold and .718 ounces of mystery metal (likely silver and minor platinum group metals).

@@ColoradoGoldCamp ,I've wondered about the values in magnetite/blacksands here in colorado for quite some time, and the conversations you have had with some of the other assayists in this thread concerning platinum group metals is bringing me back around to wanting to experiment with this. Awesome video! I like your enthusiasm when it comes to this stuff. I wonder if you could crush that magnetite down and see if it's possible to liberate the precious metals before re-running it through the separator. Exciting results to find more value in the magnetite when smelting.
@ColoradoGoldCamp
@ColoradoGoldCamp 2 года назад
Absolutely! I was stunned and thrilled to find out that our magnetite contains so much precious metal values. Now, I just have more questions and testing to do. Crushing and reconcentrating is one possibility. The most efficient recovery may be to crush all of the magnetics and leach. Who knows! But I will find out!

@ColoradoGoldCamp
@ColoradoGoldCamp 2 года назад
I calculated the rough values myself using pre smelt weight and final bead weight. Hammered them flat. Will xrf when I have one available. The non mag bead was silver in color. The mag bead was golden colored throughout so, would guess it's at least 50% gold.

It does fine with larger mesh size the only thing it wont be able to handle is larger Magnetic Rocks. They clog up the system. So in their as long as you don't have large Magnetic Rocks then you should be able to run 1/4 inch no prob.

Since your gold carries a iron hat i would have expected your BS to carry more in the magnetics. Have you ever considered any other collector while in the smelt? Sometimes, them old standards work, and sometimes they don't. Big world out there, explore the possibilities:) Great video! Nice work. Took 7 days to answer me, wow.
@ColoradoGoldCamp
@ColoradoGoldCamp 2 года назад
These particular concentrates come from a placer mine and are free from any eye visible gold. What kind of collector would you suggest I experiment with. Copper, bismuth, silver?
@richardbeee
@richardbeee 2 года назад
@@ColoradoGoldCamp Bismuth is much safer and you can get it in a lot smaller size. What i see happening is your lead is sitting on the bottom of your crucible, and your expecting the PM's to rain down through a boiling, gassy cauldron into your lead. Stirring may help but not near enough to attach the minute Au/Ag and possibly any Pd/Pt that may be in the sands. To be honest for my real fine assays i use AgCl3 as a collector. But you can't use a clay crucible and the graphite ones you have to add an abundance of carbon to keep from attacking the crucible. Then you can just part it using a 20% HNO3 solution. You'd recover all your silver back plus what ever the weight difference and you'd have a nice black powder left that is easily retorted with your lead. Pay attention to the appearance of alligator like finish on your bead, black unmelted specks, even onion skin textures are a dead give away of one or all of the Platinum group sisters. Colorado especially. Been there, done it. May all your days be golden. Always wanted someone to pass my knowledge on to before i cross the river. I'm impressed with you, your not afraid to try, to extend your bounderies so to speak. I'll be watching and sharing whatever i can.
@ColoradoGoldCamp
@ColoradoGoldCamp 2 года назад
@@richardbeee Great information, thank you Richard. I don't currently have a functioning indoor shop space so, have done minimal chemical work. A few of my beads definitely have an alligator scaly like finish. I was suspecting pgm's but have not had them analyzed yet. How efficient do you think litharge is at capturing pm values in larger than standard assay style smelts? I'm assuming that its higher melting point is of benefit because when it does liquify it will in theory capture more pm's on its way to the bottom of the crucible? What state do you live in?
@richardbeee
@richardbeee 2 года назад
@@ColoradoGoldCamp Hey, been away for a bit. Got a lab of my own:) Litharge is an excellent collector. It's in a finely divided state, so when you "charge" your flux it covers more surface area. However, factors to consider, size of cupel? Length of time to cupel? Fuel consuption? These all play a roll. I like the sound of the alligator/fish scales. Do you or can you use a microscope? If you have access to one look at your bead through it, paying particular attention to the underside. Black specks? Indicator of Rhodium. It is almost always associated with ultra- basic rock. Like ironstone. So are the rest of the PGMs. In Searchlight, NV i found that Pd was the alloy with the gold. For years people thought it was silver:) It pays to research. Only believe half of what you hear. Don't be afraid to go out on a limb. I live in AZ. West coast.

I'll tell you how to find gold quicker buddy. Easy. Hook up a metal detecting device to a conveyor belt and when gold is detected in the rubble being scan.. it either kicks that portion out or stops immediately for you to retrieve it. Place a square metal detector over top of the conveyor just above the rubble and make the conveyor stop if the metal detector goes off. Sounds cool to me.

@ColoradoGoldCamp I have access to unlimited yards of ribbed matting (42 inches wide and can be cut up to around 40 yards long). The groves of the matting run long ways, not side to side. It comes in black. I was thinking if you knew where small river/stream was and you stretched out a piece of this ribbed material from each side of the stream and anchored it down well.. then wait till after the first heavy rain OR stand up steam from it and direct the gravel materials over it. If you put it at a slight angle in the stream all the fine materials would slide to one end of the blanket/ribbed material. In other words from over head it would look like a giant sleuth box. I'd like to discuss this further with you.
@ColoradoGoldCamp
@ColoradoGoldCamp 2 года назад
That's a lot of ribbed matting! In theory it should work, I have come across a few similar contraptions in the field. I am aware of only 1 that worked a charm.
@downyourtube
@downyourtube 2 года назад
@@ColoradoGoldCamp Seems to me there's 2 different ways for use. Once you learned how to anchor it on the flow side (which I believe a long rod threaded thru the flow side like a shower curtain would work best?). Several workers could rake material from up stream over it And if mat was placed at a angle the fine material would slide to one end of it (?). Another way would be to set it up and just leave it until after a few good rains. Either way I think it would be worth a try. If you're interested and know how big of a piece would work best for you let me know and I'll send it. Another thing I was thinking what you could do with it is make some type of gold traps with it. In other words take small lengths and place them near where the water steps down (small step falls). If it all fails, well then you still have some great rib material for your sleuths. Think about it and let me know. Hope you and yours have a wonderful Christmas.
@downyourtube
@downyourtube 2 года назад
@@ColoradoGoldCamp I keep thinking about this, sorry for another comment. I was picturing this ribbed material securely fastened to a metal plated shape (not sure off hand what shape would work best). Then I pictured where the ribs run to the edge there was a trap that caught all the fine gold into it (maybe a nylon netting of some sort or enclosed container that material would slide into (not sure). Next fix a poll to the bottom of it so you could shove it down in place And make the square so it would spin on the poll. So now you have a square/triangle/circle (?) looking device with matting on it spinning freely directly on top of a sandy bottom stream. As the water flows over it (taking materials with it) any fine gold would land on top and then slide thru the groves and into a trap of some sort. I can picture this but not sure if its still a workable idea. Sounds good though..lol. I'll keep thinking.
@downyourtube
@downyourtube 2 года назад
@@ColoradoGoldCamp A plated like cage over top of the ribbed rubber would secure it in places over a great length (like you do in a sluice).
