Hey Mark - I think your female rams have internal parasites based on the white stringy poop. They also need to be kept hotter than most tropicals - like discus hot. 28-29c. May be part of your issue there, which I know is a challenge for plants. Enjoy Interzoo!

Hey Mark, nice to see the good results in RO water. I think there's very less diatoms in the RO tank which is a welcome move. I remineralize the RO water to 120 TDS with 2 in 1 KH/GH booster. Anything below 100 is bad for plants I feel. You should be fine with 150 I feel. The calcium and magnesium content in the remineralization powders is important for plants..else they show up with twisted leaves, or drooping leaf tips... Hence 120-150 should be fine... Kh 3 and GH 6 ideally

Something interesting for an experiment as well is temperature variation, like a relatively high temp setup (30C) vs relatively low (your normal temp). Curious to see how that goes and compares with each other. Great vid btw! Experiments are always good learning opportunities :)

The lower pH with tap water is also due to the soil not being saturated yet. I have ada amazonia v1 in my nofilter 20l cube with tap water and the pH was 7.5 just after water change and 5 at the end of the week for about 2 month. Now it only lowers it to about 6 and more slowly.

If you just have a small bucket that would freeze just keep some in a shrimp tank in winter (got copepods a daphnia in my blue velvet no filter nano) and in spring just put the water changed out from your tank in a bucket and add nice green water... I use R/O water the TDS comes out to 3, Ph 6.5 - 7, I don't count KH and GH. I have looked multiple times in my own experiments and a TDS of 120 - 130 is about 3deg. My process is to remineralize using Seachem products. I use Alkaline buffer to raise Ph to 7.5 (when I am doing it right I will increase ph of bucket but usually lazy). After pumping the water in I then wait about 10 mins to let the run thru the tank for a bit (cleaning glass and such) then I check TDS as the alkaline buffer will increase Kh on it's own. Once I get that reading (usually about 70-80 at this point) I will then use Equilibrium weighed out in grams until I get the amount I need to raise my TDS to 120 - 150 for a water volume of about 33 gallons. What I have seen doing it this way is that my KH and GH levels both come out to be about 3deg -3.5 or 4... Spot on to what my fish like... (per google). I also have very little algae issues with it this way (unless you count algae on rocks but was what I wanted on them)

I'd guess those rams have parasites I've seen it and solved it with a few tiger barbs, you probs have a spare tank your able to setup as a temp tank for them as they can pass on the parasites remove them from any stress factors use an anti parasite med 3 days in you'll see there colours start to pop again if that's is the case. worth a shot as the do kind of deserve to have a shot at life. salt baths also help but check a rams tolerance and much warmer water. seems like a lot to do but its worth it seeing a fish you received with issues come to thrive in your amazing tanks.

Hi Mark, I've been using RO since Day 1 of my setup. I was remineralising using Aquadur, and was up at 7dKH and 5dGH, which was way too much ( :o ) for the inhabitants I want to add as I'm going for a Amazonian biotope sort of thing. I now make my own fertilizers and remineraliser, and am hitting 2dGH and 1dKH, with a calcium level of 9ppm and magnesium of 3ppm. pH is under automatic control and is set to 6.15 which is correct for 30ppm CO2 and 1dKH Keep the videos coming ... I'm battling with a form of cyanobacter at the moment, I think it's a flow, and poor maintenance issue for me, so upping the water changes.

The higher GH in the tap water aquarium might be due to evaporation. Some of the water evaporates concentrating the dissolved solids and the water change is not removing enough solids from the water, slowly raising GH. I had a similar problem with a no filter vase y used to top off the vase with a bottle of drinking RO water from the store before I did a water change which kind of defeated the purpose of a no filter, low maintenance vase. It did solve the problem though.

I use RO/DI water, my biggest advice is DO NOT buy a aquarium RO unit buy a good Hydroponic unit. The good hydro unit are cheaper(in the long run) and far better and the filters last longer and waste less water to filter. I still get 4ppm from 500+ppm tap water after 4 years without changing any filters yet, sure it was twice the price but the first aquarium RO unit I bought the filters lasted 3 months of the use I put it through. A RO/DI unit is great to have if the humidify your place to the RO water helps the humidifier from building up all that Ca.
