When cleaning battery terminals use dilute white vinegar on leakage from alkaline batteries (then neutralize with baking soda solution) and a baking soda solution on lead acid battery leakage. unless you neutralize the residue it will continue to corrode. Pencil eraser will usually clean the contacts. The black oxidation on the copper wires in copper sulphate.

I didn’t want to use any liquid as it might have wiped off the blue paint like the alcohol did.

Today I bought this watch but the brand was Sutton. It's an exact copy. Luckily not only does the watch run, there is no corrosion on the battery terminal! Woohoo! Thanks to your video, I learned so much about this watch. I had no idea about the light. It's very very cool! This is the second watch I own that has a light. I also have a Seiko quartz from the 70s with light. They are both cool watches.

Hi. I have a reccomendation for removing items that are glued together. It's a technique that I,ve used to disassemble plastic model kits and it works really well. Immerse the part in warm soapy water water. Place it into a plastic bag and then put it into your freezer. Remove the next day. As the water freezes it expands and seperates the parts. ps I really enjoy your videos. Col.

Another Sicura watch that I absolutely love. Have several jump-hour watches and his would trump the lot. Bought my first Sicura (a Memostar) on the back of Nekkid Watchmaker's refurb. Got it from a guy in Liverpool, fully refurbished. Keeps excellent time, put a nice tan leather rally strap on it. That light is boss.

I also have the memostar Joe has. The memostar was made for the AA here in the UK (Automobile Assosiation) which is a breakdown cover service. Why they were selling watches I dont know unless it was a carrot dangler gift for new premium package members. I have some photos of the AA paperwork for one, might even be on my website where I show my collection.

Well, I bought it and it's in really good condition, bar the battery covers are missing. Internally in better state than yours was, but I still took the housing out and sanded them springs a bit (some corrosion on one) and then tentatively gave it some IPA cleaning on the electrical parts. Bit of Poly watch and some Autosol on the crystal and case. Put some batteries in and bridged the circuit with my tweezers....and the bulb works!! Loved the look of the Milanese mesh so have ordered one. I'm over the moon. What a bonkers watch. Seems to be keeping time so far, but will get it serviced (beyond my skill) The battery covers are 12mm and I reckon I can find something to go in the holes from somewhere.

Another suggestion from the world of model building. Use a glass fibre pen for cleaning off corosion around the battery contacts. It's very effective and you can work in hard to reach areas. Just be careful because you will get glass filaments stuck into your finger tips. This hurts. Col.

There's a Sorna version of this up on ebay. I had a surprise find from my Indian chap, a quite old Orient split day-date, very very pleased and to make amends for my last Orient not working he's chucked in a Seiko 6319 railway time square in black rather than me waiting six months there and back so I got that Orient surplus if you fancied a go :) It did surprise me it broke as unusually for an Indian it looks pristine inside, abs spotless with all the rhodium plating unblemished.

Hi how are things? A piece of advice: to dissolve the sulfation of the batteries, it is best to use cotton swabs dipped in a carbonated drink such as a tonic. It dissolves it without attacking the surfaces. It is applied and rubbed gently and then dries, and it is perfect.

I was expecting a really weak glow from the watch, but WOW it lights up like Blackpool pleasure beach! I could sense the frustration when you were pinging away at the spring and was saying come at it from the other side...then ping! 5h1t happens dude, I fumbled holding a movement and it flipped out of my hand, I managed to catch it before it hit the floor but the fine seconds hand had bent into a near perfect spiral as it span out my hand, I then spent 2 hours straightening it with 2 sets of plastic tweezers with flat faces. Love the collection.😁

Hi, and thanks for this video. I‘ve collected some of these jump hours as well, and there are some special items, you should be very careful with: For instance jump hour watches with Otero 796 movement (f.i. Pallas or Stowa) may never be turned anti-clockwise because the spring which moves the jumping hour disc breaks very easily if you do so. Furthermore be very careful with all Förster Fb 221 - 225 (the last watch you showed us in the vid with date-disc may have such a movement, there even exists a Fb movement with day and date disc), as the friction of the minute wheel is achieved by a special coating on it, and if you clean it in an ultrasonic or Elma cleaning machine, you will have nearly no chance, to see the minute disc moving again, although the movement itself works. There is simply no more friction left. Stay healthy my friend !
@MyRetroWatches

I was wondering how the movement was electric, but it appears that the batteries are purely for the light. It’s definitely worth cleaning all that corrosion from the old batteries. The coils are black because it’s likely the corrosion tarnished and ruined the nickel plating. What a fascinating movement.
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches Год назад
Thanks for the advise. I thought even before taking it out the case that it could only be a light circuit as 17 jewels on the dial gives the movement away. They did buy Breitling when the company went under but then ditched Sicura as a brand. The connection is weak really. Many ebay listings highlight this as a selling point but these were before Breitling and when they have pin pallet movements its not exactly high end stuff. This one as a Jump hour watch seems to command £200 which I do find hard to believe but I guess its rarer and collectible for the light.

I wonder if the Buler watches are more popular than perhaps they should be due to the homophone with "Bueller" - as in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", the iconic "High School Senioritis Delinquent" film of the 80s, filmed in Chicagoland, USA? Have you ever seen it? Sir Paul McCartney has reportedly said that he disliked the inclusion of "Twist and Shout" in the film because of the use of brass instruments, at least according to Wikipedia. Most of that film's > $70 million gross take was in the US and Canada, but in a way, at least one of those watches would have looked good on maybe Cameron's wrist....he falls in the pool...fakes death...but his watch keeps going...."Ferris, You're my Hero...." Lol. Whatever the reason, I lived in Chicagoland at one time in my life, and having a Buler jump hour wristwatch would have been very cool indeed. "What kind of watch is that?" "Buler....Buler....Anyone....Anyone?" Cheers Mike and stay strong. You've got a wonderful collection there.

Loved Ferris Buller day off! One of my great films from being young. I am massive into Ferrari so watching it just for the GT California! Sticking it in reverse on jacks. Quality!

Then he kicks on it and .... out the back window! It's amazing because the house that scene was filmed in actually exists and there was a controversy about it being preserved as an Historic Landmark several years ago. I didn't keep track to find out the result, but that house and garage were real when it was filmed. The Ferrari that went out the window the wrong way was not. It is also obvious during the Lake Shore Drive shots in Chicago that the car was being towed. :) But when you were a teenager watching the movie, suspension of disbelief was easy. :)

@@Alex-px2mb interesting facts. I knew most of the shots would not be a real California they were just as valuable back then too.

I wish I could remember what video I saw...there was a company that was unable legally because of some law that had been passed, to go to a jeweled escapement! ...oh, it was Chronoglide I think! Anyway, it sounded like this watchmaker was stuck with pins until a late date. Maybe someone can elucidate more?

I will have to find that video. BFG were a big manufacturer of pin pallet and one I see all the time, my other Sicura has one but also 17 jewels but twice the size of this movement. A quirky watch but I love it for that.

Hi Mike great video Good to see you back in the swing on an unrelated note I was wondering on your thoughts on watch cleaning fluids I have been lucky to purchase a vintage benray fully working and not sure if I should use l & r fluids or Elma that you dilute with water what are your thoughts best wishes David.

I use L&R I can’t speak of the other stuff as this is all I have used. I do use the ammoniated version as I am in the garage but it only smells at first. Does a good job of brightening brass coloured wheels. Waterless is the way to go 100% the L&R is expensive but mine has lasted a few years and I still have one more clean change to do. With the rinse as I have two stage I only change the first rinse for new and then that becomes the last stage as it’s the cleanest. So I am swapping them around if that makes sense. Just makes it go a bit longer.

Too bad they don't make so many jumphour watches nowadays. There are some ones that look like a jumphour. Except that the hour doesn't actually jump.

I will take a look. I have a selection of assorted springs like this but all for bigger watches. This shock jewel is one of the smallest I’ve handled hence thinking I will only find one from a donor.

You act like you never cleaned battery corrosion/acid before. Just use alcohol and vinger and qtips already and rub it. Why are you acting afraid of it and picking at it with metal things like it will do something if you are not careful? This is simple stuff to do and take a few min to clean ip really.
@MyRetroWatches

Well you missed the part where I used alcohol on the front part and it wiped off the blue paint on the dial . As the contact could go through the dial I did not want to risk any liquid going through and then ruining the dial .
