One little thing I see people mistaking when watching rallying for the first time is that when you see people turning the opposite way right before a corner, then snapping it back to make it, they're not making a mistake. It's called a Scandinavian Flick or Pendulum Turn, basically just getting a lot of weight transfer going to turn the car in, while also slowing it down.
@joshthomas2536

Probably better known as a Feint, but also called inertia technique too.

Side note. They usually do NOT know the track like the back of their hand. You get to drive over it twice in a normal road car in the days leading up to the event to create the pace notes and that's it. In most rallies the same stage is driven twice, so you drive it like 4 times in that one weekend and then it's on to next year. Now I have done it and you do tend to remember the nastiest corners on stages, but definitely not everything.

When sitting on the side of a rally track, getting sprayed with mud water or gravel and getting cuts and bruises is a badge of honour. Running onto the track and putting a rolled car back on it wheels so it can continue racing is the holy grail of rally spectating. I used to go to watch the British Rally Championships when I was a kid in the 1980s and it was crazy.

The clips are made mostly for the sound. Some of the cars are during WRC racing old and new, but some are from exhibition rally's, or amateur. Usually the high quality footage from recent years with old cars. Some of them are rare and extremely collectible and expensive. Rally Lancias or Quattros go for 100.000$ or more for example. Lancia Stratos for 500.000$. That's why some of them seem to not push the car, and the ones in competitive seem to try to destroy the cars
@pluggedfinn-bj3hn
@pluggedfinn-bj3hn 7 месяцев назад
Yeah, also for the historical cars, they don't always race to get the fastest time, they often race for who's the closest to a specified time. This way they can still compete, but don't need to wreck the cars in doing so.

In rally you do not anticipate. Days before the race you and your co-driver go through these stages and write every condition, bend, surface etc beforehand. In the videos when you hear co-driver talking, he is actually directing driver one bend or section in advance. So he could basically be driving in fog and still know where he is going.

the insane thing about rallye is the ungrippy underground plus the tiny roads and then speeds up to 180 kp/h through a forest or on a cliff! Drivers are usually split by a minute so it is common for spectators to jump in and help the drivers to continue, unblock the track or perform first aid. People approaching are trained professionals, thats why u can sit 2meter from the road. Ah yes and there is no bad weather skip for stages, u race in rain, thunderstorm, heat, storm, ice, fog... just a usual day for a driver trusting his co-pilot who has notes from 1 tracksighting.

Sooo many things... there is 'no course' - that are public roads. The Lancia is naturally aspirated while the audis have turbos. they keep the revs up so the turbo doesnt loses its punch. You can hear how they give gas when the clutch isn't engaged. and for the last clip - water was the least soft spot on all the surfases they could have hit. oh and they face something more serious than a 'soft landing' in that splash, but you did figure that out some clips before hand. And lastly - your faces where pretty darn good.

I love watching americans watch rally. I think the roads in Europe are just made for it. Narrow twisty and lots of different surfaces. I love the ease of driving when i come visit America and the views on the roads are amazing. But nothing is a much fun as driving small country rodas in nippy little hatchback in the UK. You don't need something with massive power (that would kill you quick) the roads make almost any car fun / interesting to drive.

The top end rally cars are built for pure acceleration and grip. They are ridiculously fast. The factory sponsored cars can have 0 to 60 times of between 1.8 and 2.0 seconds! As a comparison the 0 to 60 for a Dodge Hellcat is 3.9 seconds and a Lambourgini Aventador does it in 2.9 seconds and they have to be on Tarmac to do it! Rally drivers are always using one of the following driving styles, throttle wide and sideways, throttle wide and airbourne or throttle wide and both!

Looks like a few of those clips are Group B cars, which was a class introduced to allow manufacturers to push the limits a little further, but ultimately got banned for becoming too dangerous, it's still known as the golden age of Rally, I was a teen at the time and me and all my friends had a poster of the Audi Quattro on our bedroom wall. There's a lot of Rally stages around where I live in Northern Snowdonia, Wales, one road course around a piece of headland called the Great Orme has a wall all the way around it for about 4 miles, every time the rally comes a few sections of wall get taken out, on the other side of the wall in some places are cliffs and a sheer drop into the sea below, it takes some bottle to drive flat out like these guys do around there.

Need to get this out of my system... They are NOT drifting. It's called powersliding. Drifting is a sport and an art, where placement of the car in the slides is key. Powersliding is only about getting as fast through a corner as possible. In rally powersliding is used because you are driving against the clock. Fastest time wins, with less repair work wins. Btw it looks slow on cam, but its rare that these guys goes under 60 mph through corners. Straights are at 140+ mph. Driving surface doesn't matter, you need to be fast on all surfaces. Love you vids btw!

The Audi Quattro was notoriously understeery, so in order to drift a corner it always had to be pushed over limit, on purpose. The Lancia (the "effortless" car) was the last great 2WD rally car, but it also meant it was much easier in corners with good grip than the early 4WD cars (like the Audi).

4:40 that was done intentionally, he did anticipated the turn way beforehand. That turn you see over there is called a pendulum turn, very common practice in experienced rally drivers. This is done more so commonly when you are approaching a very hard turn right/left and you approach with way more speed, you have to then take a pendulum turn just like you would on a bycycle, this done because otherwise it may result in heavy understeer if they would have slowed right at the foot of that turn otherwise

@@SpeedNash I don't mean I'd jump straight into one and fly or be even good in one but its weird how quickly driving fast and even getting airborne in a car comes "normal" . Driving on loose twisty twisty gravel road at 60mph with dips and bumbs that allow you to catch air is rather normal thing here in Finland. Of course not everyone jumps their car or anything but most drive fast and don't fear the roads or speed. Same with winter and ice. Driving into a turn at almost the same speed as you did on gravel while the car tries to slide around is completely normal (and winter tires are mandatory here so hence the speeds).

Y'all should check out bergrennen (basically just means hill climb but they do it differently in the Alps, believe me) it's basically grip racing time trial on tarmac and a bunch of different classes, also OPEN WHEEL classes. So you're gonna see old Lola's and other openwheeled floor it on narrow alpine twisty roads. And they floor it... Also is nice to see all the crazy builds like BMW M3 with Judd V8's screaming like the old F1 cars. Bergrennen, St. Ursanne (is one of the more famous/documented courses) And then, British Hill climb.

And the best thing about rallying is apart from maybe doing the stage a previous year they have never been through the stage at full speed, they do a recce at a restricted speed and take notes. Then just have to kinda guess how quick they can go lol this is my favorite motor sport. I actually was on the final stage of the then RAC rally GB and was within the last mile of the final stage when king Mcrea won the world championship and took a sign from the stage to keep for my memories (it wasn't an actual stage sign I wouldn't do that just a spectator sign)

There was a lot of classic rallying in there … check out the late Christian Klaustner, Quattro Gp 4, he wasn’t the fastest but without doubt he was the most spectacular!

If you guys take into account that most of the cars you see drifting here are FWD, that's even more impressive. 😀

Lads, lads, you have to get into your local rally scene. Get a cheap car, bring it up to safety spec and go out and scare yourselves shitless. Rally is a grass roots motorsport, there has to be a motorclub near you that holds events. Big question is - who drives and who navigates? More rally? Oh yes please, I love watching your heads melt.
