What Larry is saying is that this is for Terre Haute, the town where Indiana State University is. He was referring to the loss to Michigan State in the NCAA finals.
Larry Bird"s father was in the Korean War and suffered PTSD. He turned to drinking from his experiences in the war. Larry's parents divorced. When Larry was in his late teens his Father calls home and speaking to his ex-wife said "I am behind in my support payments, had all sorts of problems and ended the call by saying the family was better off without him and that he would kill himself. Like Larry, his Father did what he set out to do and he committed suicide.
I absolutely agree... Also, Longevity isnt even a valid metric to begin with. It has nothing to do with your sklill or talent, just luck, how good medical attention you have access to and who youre playing. It says more about the environment your in than it does about you, really. Counting longevity when comparing an 80s player to a 2020 player is like saying a 1987 Ford Accord is a better car then a Hummer cuz it lasted longer without taking into account that the Hummer went to fakking Afghanistan while the Ford cruised the SF suburbs. The NBA in the 80s was god damn battle field compared to the baby-proof adult daycare we have these days. LeBron would not be playing any 19 or 20 seasons if he played in the 80s. Hed be out after 13-15 like everyone else was back then. He only HAVE longevity cuz the game is soft, injuries are way more uncommon and not nearly as bad while medical treatment also made quite alot of progress over the past 40 years. In essence one could argue that Longevity relates to literally everything surrounding a player but not actually to the player himself. Even if it was a valid metric. If I win 4 rings in 12 years and someone else wins 5 rings in 20 years... Doesnt that make ME the better player? Thats an average of 1 ring every 3 years. The other guy has 1 every 5. If he takes 5 years to do what I can do in 3 years, how is he better? It makes no snese at all. To get a valid number out of Longevity to use as a metric for how good someone is, youd have to take all their accomplishments and devide them by seasons played... Otherwise skill is a secondary secondary factor in that value. Problem is that if you did that it would immediately render the entire reason for even having Longevity as a metric pointless to begin with.
@@F1rstWorldNomaD takes a team though, alot of the time. But also, one man can have literally the best longevity you've ever seen.. what's longevity though? Skill? Lastingness? To me, it's the 2nd
@@F1rstWorldNomaD I agree with most of what you said. But the Hummer, and Humvee are two different vehicles. The Humvee went to Afghanistan not the Hummer. The Hummer can't do what the Humvee can do. But your references to everything is on point
That story about his father was thought provoking,a true testament to iron-will power and Bird playing 4 more years with a bad back:RESPECT to him and his father.Kiwi Lenard for the Clippers with the LOAD management ( which I think is being pure-LAZY ) but,the Clppers agreed to sign him,so they knew what they were getting.
Just look at Birds stats when he promised Magic he would put on a show 47 minutes, 36 points on 64% shooting, 21 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocks. However he did miss a free throw.
Larry said "I won this one for Terre Haute," which is the city where Indiana State University is. The man in the story about the broken ankle was his father, who committed suicide in 1975.
Larry was a complicated man and it showed in this documentary. Injuries, leadership, trash talking, game winning shots, there was nothing you could predict from night to night.
b this why we loved this man Larry Legend he gave us his all every game the excitement back then it was amazing , that's why we go so hard for this man Larry Legend 🐐☘️👍🏀 ty b for these videos keeping Larry Legends memories alive ty 👍🐐☘️🐐 33 🏀☘️
I got to see my 1st Bucks game vs the Celtics in 90-91 and saw Larry laying down during warmups. Had to ask my dad why. Wish I could've seen him in his prime but Im still glad I got to see him play.
She is Jackie MacMullan, famed Boston sportswriter. She covered the Celtics and the NBA for the Boston Globe and Sports Illustrated. She was there during the Birds tenure with the Celtics. That last bit where you see Larry's physical pain is from the documentary A COURTSHIP OF RIVALS, which is about LARRY and MAGIC. A great watch and available on youtube.
Dr.J is great and you need to check him out. M.J. Bird and Dr. J were LeBron's top three. Jackie MacMullan is the female Boston sportswriter that worked with Bird and Magic on the book they wrote together. "When the Game was Ours"
Julius Erving could take off from the free throw line and dunk the ball. He was a great player and made many flashy plays. I think there is a lot of Dr. J in MJ
@@violettamezzanotte2888 he was a veteran from Korea war, could not find a job, life was rough on him; one day pulled the trigger... Larry was very young when that happened.
The thing to remember with the lone ref ejecting everyone - that ref, Bavetta was a ROOKIE REF officiating one of his very first NBA games ever after his veteran ref /supervisor was taken out with a broken leg.
This the reason why I say Larry Bird is the greatest SF of all time he is different, nobody in NBA history cant do, all that things, steals, rebound, assist, defense, scoring and shooting etc all with double digits in one game that's crazy man this guy is like the real Goat on his prime. it's unbelievable to even think about how MJ can't never defeat Larry Bird is also crazy.
The story bout the guy, in the boot, with the broken foot was his father. Also, the blonde female was a reporter for the Boston Globe. Love your reaction videos!
I live Boston and Bird is my favorite player..Dr J was a super star and went to college at UMass Boston!!He did Michael Jordan sh*t..That lady is Jackie McMullen, hall of Fame writer for Boston Globe and Sports Illustrated
Very surprised you didn’t know who Dr J was … he is definitely a top 10 player ! He was Jordan before Jordan and by far the best player in the league before Bird and Magic arrived ! Even grabbed a Title and League MVP over Bird and Magic in 1983 ! He finished his career with three Titles , four MVP awards and three scoring TITLES …….
My Daddy raised me as a little girl to love the Dr. J and the Sixers and hate Larry Bird and Celtics.. Literally still had that mindset till 3 weeks ago when I just randomly said to myself.. watch this video of Larry.. I was blown away... I'm Football fan first probably Baseball 2nd.. hockey back in the day with the Flyers.. I never have truly watched Basketball.. after watching these videos.. I'm missing out.
I'd like to give you something to think about for a second: Magic Johnson's presentation during Larry Bird's retirement event was pretty much the _only_ time that an entire arena of Boston Celtics fans have shown absolute love for a Los Angeles Laker. That was the night that Magic became a Celtic by association.
Terre Haute is where Bird went to college and took the team with him to the NCAA Championship game. Terre Haute is where Indiana State is, Bird's College.
The lady doing the interview was Jackie (Mac) MacMullan a sports columnist for The Boston Globe. She covered the Boston Celtics & Larry Bird. She also wrote a book, When the Game Was Ours with Larry Bord & Magic Johnson.
She is Jackie Mcmillan, she wrote many books + stories about Larry Bird + Magic Johnson, "When the Game was Ours". She covered basketball for tha Boston Globe during the "Bird Era".
He said he won the championship for "Terra Haute". It's a town in Indiana where his college, Indiana State, is located. He lost the NCAA Finals against Magic and Michigan State so when the Celtics won the NBA championship, again against Magic, it was redemption.
Dr J was top 15 easily. Dude was a stud. My favorite player. Made me a Philly fan. But Larry was a nightmare and a stud. They talk about larry being slow and he was in a 40 but he had a great first step
He did a bunch of McDonald's commercial that was depicted from him always calling his shots. He did several different commercials for them but the same subject matter and it was always one or two guys betting burgers on called shots
Hey, man, I love your energy.I love your channel. You know basketball and I appreciate people who do. Plus sixty three bring just a couple of years younger than Larry. In my 20s and 30s, we would call games at halftime in the league.Just so we could get to a t v to watch boston. Man and woman magic and lar by rueling did change and fix the league
that was Jackie McMullen she wrote for the Boston globe and was an analyst for ESPN... She has wrote several books on Larry Bird. She IS the Larry Bird expert.
