Crazy view of a passenger jet landing at St. Thomas

The view from a nice overlook on the South Side of St. Thomas overlooking the international airport. The 7,000ft runway may have been too short for taking off over the city and into the hillside that our jet flying back to Minneapolis stopped just for fuel in San Juan Puerto Rico to top off for the flight back to the States.

CLEARED TO LAND from a former Air Traffic Controller from St.Thomas Tower.... I loved my job there.... now retired and back home in Mississippi, USA.

Live in STT for 30 yrs. Use to sit on the beach down by the college and watch them come in daily 🥰 Those we're the days. Back in the early 70's life was so beautiful and so much fun. People were kinder.

Grew up in STT. I remember when the airport was named Harry S. Truman airport. Walked down a flight of stairs from the plane to the taurmak. Also sat on the beach (think it was Brewer's) and watched them land. You could set your watch. those were the days of Pan Am and Eastern airlines running that route. That runway was always scary due to length, and jutting out into the water, plus that mountain when outbound planes would bank to the right. Was there when American Airlines overshot the runway and crashed into a gas station near the end of the runway, going east. Left in the early 70's and ITA: people were friendlier, kinder and considerate.

That runway extending into the sea reminds me of Hong Kong's Kai Tak airport. I flew there in 1992.

I lived in St.Thomas for two years and have landed there many times Great video shot up on the mountain.

I grew up there from '62-82... That's the new extended air strip,the old one was shorter than the average fishing jetty. Caribeaire crashed on it all the time,the sides of the runway was littered with their wreckage. That's when the screams of the arriving tourist really picked up...

One of the scariest places I’ve ever landed. You hit the ground and the reversers and hard brakes are on!!!

most of the jet service there do it non stop back, not so sure about all of them stopping in San Juan, nice video by the way :)

That runway is 2134 m or 7000 feet. Enough length for a 737! Love the view of that aircraft coming in to land. Looks mighty close to the water! Thank God for safe landings!

True Skbenergy the majority of the flights that leaves St Thomas are direct flights back to the states. You may have one or two that actually stops in San Juan.

I have a video posted of a nonstop delta to Atlanta flight. taking off over the island and banking over Megan's bay. Of the countless times I've flown in and out of USVI about half have departed south over island.

Our pilot mentioned the fuel stop in San Juan, but this was probably only necessary because we were flying a 737 back to Minnesota
