The durian thing must be like the cilantro thing here in Europe. Some people love cilantro and say it's citrusy and tangy. Other people describe the flavour as cat pee mixed with soap. Maybe it's a genetic/physical thing, and people who like durian really can't percieve the bad part.

I find Durian to taste and smell like rotten onions without the sharpness of real onions - and that's it. It is unpleasant but there are other things in Asian food stores that I think smell worse. With cilantro, it has been confirmed that it is a genetic thing that makes some people find it to taste bad. I must be one of those.

The licensed plate law in the Philippines is that any number that ends with is not allowed to drive in that day, you could still drive on that day. For example, you have a number of 251, you could still drive on monday, but there is a time that that number in that day can drive and cant, this is called "window time". Im just saying this because there is just time that they can and cant drive and it is just the purpose to reduce traffic. Anyway sometimes the traffic can range up to 1-7 hours. youre welcome

I'm a singaporean. Singapore does not allow chewing of gum because the people at the past always sticks the chewed gum under things like under the seat of public transport or under the table of coffee shops. About the durian, half of Singaporeans love durians but the other half hates it. That is why there is a lot of seeking of durians in public but to prevent the other half from being disgusted, they do not allow durians to be eaten in public. It just shows how our government cares for all our points of view.

Ha were you referring to the license plate thing? That one may/may not be officially a law but I've heard about it from relatives in Jakarta. Perhaps to replace the whole 3-in-1 (carpooling) thing. But whether it's actually being implemented, is another issue.
@CalvinLimuel
@CalvinLimuel 8 лет назад
+Off the Great Wall okay I just did my research, granted I've never heard of this (or any place that does this thing) while I was still in Jakarta, but apparently they have been discussing about this since early 2012, and the order was just passed and made into effect actually last Tuesday (8/30) and thousands of vehicles have been ticketed in the past week. Honestly this still sound ridiculous to me, I'm happy that our new governors Jokowi and Ahok can get a lot of things done really quickly but unless Jakarta has stronger public transportation system people would still prefer private transportation. I hope Jakartans would get around by doing more carpooling with friends but I suspect there still gonna be more tickets written for this traffic offense.

The goal of the Metabo program is to maintain a low percentage of obesity among the Japanese population. Currently that percentage is 5%. The Sumotori (sumo westlers) are part of that 5%. That is acceptable so long as the majority of Japanese maintain healthy eating/exercise habits. So no fears, the tradition of the Sumo will continue.

GlennPlayz - Minecraft & More no. The Sumotori are not exempt. Nearly all citizens in Japan are a members of the national healthcare systems. Citizens who are employed by businesses get that healthcare thru their employer. So if any employee is considered overweight/obese, the employer pays more for that employee. The Sumotori simply pay higher premiums.

The Thai law regarding underwear is very old and was implemented by a past king as he tried to modernize the country.Traditional Thai dress would see women having an exposed breast , western clothing was introduced including a bra for women and this is how this law came into place to curb the traditional dress in favor of western style dress.

With that China "Elderly Rights Law" where adult children have to visit their elderly parents, it's China's own fault that their people have come to this. First was the Cultural Revolution that happened from 1966 to 1976 as all Confucian values were eroded. Second was the one child policy which puts more pressure on that child to visit their parents as compared to siblings who can rotate the visits and share that burden.

Hey I am from Singapore, just to add on . the govt lifted chewing gum in 2004 exclusively only for smoker's chewing gum (those type which encourage smokers to quit their cigarettes) . and not the ordinary type which we have. which is why for the past 24 years till now there's still no sales of the chewing gum anywhere in Singapore.
@myarowlands6294

I'm a little late, but Singapore isn't that strict or difficult to follow the rules. There are signs everywhere to tell you what you can and cannot do. 1. Don't eat gum - because people keep throwing them on the floor and sticking them under tables and on walls. 2. Don't be loud on the bus or MRT (Train) - it's just being considerate 3. Don't graffiti - It's called manners. Also, you can get a hefty fine and it's pretty easy to be caught because there are CCTV everywhere 4. Don't litter - You can also get heavily fined. (Also, unlike Japan where you have to go to the toilet to trash your rubbish, there are rubbish bins everywhere. 5. Don't cause a scene in public - Take your private business at home, unless you feel unsafe (Also, everything is in English, Malay/Indonesian, Hokkien, Cantonese, Mandarin and loads more because it's a hub for travellers) PS: Some people have a misconception that Singaporeans get caned when they break the law. You do, but only if you've committed a severe felony, and sometimes its only one or two lashes - which isn't that bad.

While sale of chewing gum is prohibited in Singapore, consumption is perfectly legal. If you travel overseas regularly, it is perfectly legal to bring some back and even share them with your friends. While it makes for some good jokes, the law was passed down in order to cut down on the impact of littering. Plastic bottles and tissue are disgusting but chewed gum is a whole other level.

This may have changed, but in the Philippines, wealthy people often pay the local police for a sticker that they can put on their cars, which effectively orders the police to look the other way when they commit any type of traffic offense. This includes driving on days that they shouldn't; and even driving on roads that nobody else is allowed to drive on. (this allows them to bypass heavy traffic) I love durian! What I've found is that durian smells quite pleasant when it's cold, but if it's warm it smells like a rotting corpse. The difference is noticeable.

The one of the license plates is also used in other countries (like Costa Rica and Colombia) to reduce traffic jams. If a car with a forbidden licence is seen driving around, you get a fine. In Costa Rica is like in the philippines, but in Colombia is for odd numbers one day and even numbers the next, and so on

The indonesian one about the license plate also works in São Paulo (Brazil). But only for a certain period (the rush hours) to avoid heavy traffic: 7am to 10am and 5pm to 8pm (depending on what number your license plate ends, you can't use your car in a certain day of the week during these hours)

there is no such law that makes it illegal to be fat in japan there has been so much rumors about this worldwide and it is downright crazy it is just a law that recommends you to take a free annual medical checkup the penalties are applied to the companies or the regional government in which there were too few people taking the checkup

The licence plate thing was done in Paris in the 60s or 70s (can't remember exactly) to cut down on gridlock. In that case I think it was odd numbered plates could drive on odd-numbered days, so if your plate ended in 1 or 3 or whatever you could drive on the 11th, 13th, 17th etc of the month.

What about the law that prohibits eating in public buses and trains in Singapore? I find it strange when I see others do it when I am abroad. Is there a similar law in other countries?

Traffic in Metro Manila is brutal. We aren't talking about being stuck on the road for minutes but HOURS. It's terrible. Roads are too narrow, way too many cars, undisciplined drivers & pedestrians alike, corrupt enforcers, among others. Number coding is one of the immediate solutions they can think of. But I don't think it's effective enough because it is up until 7pm, I think & the mad traffic can go on until almost midnight in certain areas. Just talking about is already stressing me out.

Ladies, you are delightful and your vids are a joy to watch but regarding the Japanese Metabo program you got one detail wrong. It is not a law, it is a mandate so it is NOT illegal to be fat in Japan. Its a common misconception used in viral videos to get clicks: in other words clickbait. Otherwise you got the basic details right. The Metabo mandate requires doctors to check the waistline of their patients (between ages 45-74) and advise dietary education if necessary as part of the national healthcare systems wellness program.

In Spain there's a little-known and never-enforced "law" that says you can't stick a postage stamp bearing the king's image upside-down on a letter. The law was passed under the Franco dictatorship as "desacato" (disrespect to authority) and never repealed. But nobody pays attention to it anymore.

I can see where the government was comming from when they banned gum in SG. Back when it was still available people were sticking it all over the place: lift buttons, mrt stations and all, and it was very difficult to clean off. Eventually the government got so pissed off that they just banned the selling of gum in SG. (We still smuggle gum in from Malaysia tho)

I'm Japanese who go back to Japan at least yearly, and I've never heard of this said metabolic syndrome "law" or a thing alike. This isn't true. Yes people work on their weight management and that's a good thing because we all should have healthy weight. (ie not underweight or overweight) however, it's not a law or regulation. There are overweight and underweighted people all over the world

let me explain the Philippines, its more like a rule and regulation to lessen the traffic situation but this rule actually worsens it. so on all days except Sunday there is a "color coding " but adter 7pm that color coding is lifted. I don't think this rule is implemented in rural areas though

No one here in Singapore asks if you want gum. Ever. But before it was banned, that was a common question. They don't allow durians on public transportation though but it isn't heavily enforced. Girl on the left (the Viet) isn't wearing underwear. Lol.
@enelrebma
@enelrebma 8 лет назад
one can not only not bring durians on board public transportation, they are also not allowed to eat and drink, not even a sip of water or a prescribed lozenge. Fine ranges from $30 to $300, and chances of getting caught is very high. I'm not sure about hungry babies on trains but once, a lady who almost felt like passing out ate a sweet and had to pay a fine.

Hi guys, I am Thai. I should correct rules for you. I dont call it a law coz it's not. 1. you can actually eat durian outside, but you cant carry it on public transportation eg. subway. I think, however, it will be okay if you carry it on open-air buses. 2. I dont even know if we are not allow to not go out without underwear. So I think it's not the truth.

If you think about the size of many public spaces (bus, train, small cars/taxi seating, etc), and the population numbers, and the fact that Asians tend normally to lean toward 'lean,' it's not surprising that, on seeing a trend toward obesity, they put up road blocks.

From reading up a bit, Metabo laws are put in place to help watch their citizens health, as Japanese have higher health risks in many categories. The law requires their citizens to be checked yearly and are penalised by paying higher tax rate. Seems to make sense, as the higher health risk, the more likely you will require medical claims... Thailand and our underwear laws, Named "Indecent exposure", with a fine of 500 Baht ...Tried digging this up in my native language, and it seems to stem from a popular "flashing" period (insert any sort of speculation why, you'd probably be right). The law is used to scare the creepers. I also presume it's to protect women from being targeted, because we might be noticed to have gone commando in our skirts? Update: They have kept it to prevent sex in vehicles, probably still cheaper than the local love hotels........?

If you think your children don't pay enough attention to you, you can sue them and the government will force your children to visit you, how often is 'often' varies in each individual case. That plate number thing has also implemented in Beijing. The system is automatic, so if you get caught on camera, you will have to pay fine and lose some points on the driving license.
