This is precisely why I went with a Grandmother. It’s loaded with great Moog “Modules” and now I can build a complimentary Eurorack that integrates into the Grandma. I’ve gotta say though, the Niftykeyz seems like a fantastic way for folks with a collection of modules to build a synth. Very cool.
This is the direction I’ve wanted to see modular go for a long time . And all the pain in the ass bits are “organized “ and easy to identify this way . Also your layout shows off your knowledge of sound and gives it a very important super power …”Musicality “ the missing link in 90% of what’s out there right now . This definitely made the difference here and welcomes the curious musicians too! Finally! 👽🙏
I hope this is a start of a new wave of tools for modular setups... Like having an 8track keystep and 10 voice NiftyKEYS perhaps? Loving the whole idea :)
Thank you for this amazingly in depth and mind opening potential of the new modular device from cre8audio. It was your previous review of the Niftycase/bundle that I ran out and jumped into the modular rabbit hole. Where the NiftyKEYZ shines though is that it can pull so many dimensions together to create something else I would never have thought of (as you point out so well). Also, it more suits my random mixing of so much which is music that allows you to create without being a professional keyboard player, musician or someone that has been in the business for years. It also appeals to my "gadget-ness" in one device while also functioning as a musical tool. You structured this perfectly into easy digestive bites explaining all of the basics in one video. I could be wrong but it looks like it also pushed the right buttons for your creative process as well. Damn you cre8audio!!! Thanks for making me really want this - my wife may hate you for this! haha
thanx for that rob..great as usual..i think they are on to a real winner here,,the possibilities are really only limited to the modules...what an amazing live rig you can make with this,,,,well done nifty keys for an amazing affordable creative tool....cheers Ty from s.oz
Here I was wondering why this design wasn't more common. Someone still needs to build just a keybed with attachable rows. Imagine a moog 3 tier with an attached keyboard. Just replace the wood sides!
Sounds great 👍. Love the look of this... still never did get the Niftycase and not jumped into modular.... I maybe never will.... I have loads of "real" synths and a ridiculous number of softsynths... still lust after the BARP 2600... just because (I could never have a real one) Have some(?)... One semi modular dreadbox.... and certainly loved Gaz's journeys into modular using the waldorf keys/modular thing (I almost jump on the KB37) but I really don't have the space or the time. The modular connectivity that comes in this case though looks awesome and stereo? That i think the nifty case was missing for me... You "influencers" have alot to answer for.... but keep up the SYNTHGASLUST pushing... it's great. I'm going off in a huff to learn some of the gear I have 😁👍👏
I like the deemphasized aspect of eurorack. That being said, this is something to consider. I want a case dedicated to polyphony. Maybe this would be a sweet case for that?
Hot take, but why didn't they learn that the kb37 didn't sell (at its high price point) because it only had one row? I have a kb37 and it sits on a shelf in my basement because it's too big for 104hp. Double that, and you can actually construct a multifaceted synthesizer, instead of a single voice with limited utilities and modulation options.
Nah, a mildly warm take - the KB-37 didn't sell because of the price and its voicing limitations. The NiftyKEYZ is more affordable and has 4 times the voices. In the video i was running 3 voices with no bother and no need for additional stuff. 2 rows would make it unweildy and then why wouldn't you just use a separate keyboard?
Now that you had the Nifty Keys for a year or more whats your thoughts? Keys still good, any helpful firmware updates, any issues, etc etc?.................thoughts.., and thanks for your demo
It doesn't really fit into my workflow or space so i've not used it since the review. However, AJH Synth has just released a collaborative version with Cre8audio so i think that's a good endorsement.
This thing is dead sexy, I will give it that. That part of a buying decision process is certainly not to be underestimated. However, as an entry point where does this get you compared to say a keystep pro + Doepfer 6UX84 (or even Behringer Eurorack Go)? When considering how much modules cost in relation to controller + racking the extra $200 for that yields significantly more go juice for not much more dosh. Still dead sexy, though!
Yeah, it's only one of many directions to take. This is not really for me - I prefer a more freeform approach outside the confines of a keyboard, but this works because it's a unit that's easy to grasp and work with within its physical limitations.
I have the Waldorf KB37, which is nice. But I like that this has more keys and more CV channels and even a bit more HP even with the pitch and mod wheels moved to the top. They packed quite a bit of utility into this. Given the price, which is less than some Eurorack cases, I assume this isn't a Fatar keybed. Is it still decent?
the FATAR key bed is quite honestly a huge draw card for the waldorf KB37, unfortunately i didn't get in whilst they were still being manufactured, though it really is a lovely work of art.
I’m not sure, there’s no marketing materials yet and I can’t be bothered to count. Please note this video is unlisted so please don’t share until it’s officially released, thanks
My biggest question is: how solid is the keyboard to CV? Because I had as nifty case and the midi to CV feature was the big selling point for me. But then it was very glitchy to the point of being unusable. I sold it. Maybe I just got a dud. Considering the price, you get what you pay for kind of thing I guess. This costs a fair amount more so.....
After decades of software/DAW-based stuff, I've finally been diving in and have a million questions about adding this to what I have. But one thing I noticed with a lot of hardware is that LFOs - unlike those of us in privileged software land - don't sync to a tempo/clock out of the box. Does this let you do that?
Yes, free form modulation is both a pro and a con of analogue modular. Many LFOs will take a clock though. In the NiftyKEYZ it's tied to the internal clock rate and you can set time divisions so it's factor of the clock rather than the clock itself. So, the answer is yes!
48:22 puts me in mind of a lunatic's pipe organ. Imagine a church organ with patch tubes instead of stops…. (I mean, ok, it wouldn't really work, but….)
Can you use this to control modules outside of the self-contained case? Like the Keystep Pro, but in conjunction with the modules packed inside of the Nifty?
@@MoltenMusicTech Sorry, for such a shite question, Robin. Yeah, I saw how it can easily integrate with my existing modular. Looks like I'm going to have to replace my Keystep Pro with this one. Getting it tomorrow. Many thanks.
I really don't feel it's expensive for what it is. The KB-37 was expensive at closer to $1000 but this seems about right if you see it as a MIDI controller/Eurorack case/MIDI to CV module
not a keystep (does not have polyphonic cv) but with a keystep pro yeah, but it would cost more (they keystep pro with a case) plus alot of people enjoy having it all in one package
