Cream - Toad live at Royal Albert Hall, London.
November 26th, 1968
10 of 11
"Farewell Concert" is the live recording of the Cream's final concert at the Royal Albert Hall on November 26th, 1968.
Directed by Tony Palmer, the film incorporates pieces of six performances with narration by BBC announcer Patrick Allen, along with interviews with the band members themselves, showcasing their playing abilities.
The film has often been criticized for both its mediocre sound and visual effects.
In 2005, a special extended edition of the concert appeared featuring full versions of all songs separated from the narration and interviews. The new version featured digitally remastered sound and video including three bonus songs.

'A really good band with a bad drummer is not a good band. A really bad band with a good drummer sounds better.' - Ginger Baker.
@SluffAdlin
@SluffAdlin 6 лет назад
Actually this is true.... Since a band follows a time signature and the drummer (mainly) is in charge of keeping that time signature, they can essentially make or through the entire performance. Drummers are also responsible for controlling the amount of energy being released, both by the band and the audience.

You talking about the Strange Brew Movie. There's a lot of good stuff in that movie. One of them is the one your talking about but Ginger says it a little bit different. Ginger: A band is as good as it's drummer, a mediocre band with a mediocre drummer is mediocre. A mediocre band with a good drummer, becomes a good band. A really good band with a really good drummer, becomes a superband. And right after that I love what Alex Van Halen says what he learned from Ginger is that drums are a musical instrument. There's more then just the hits, there's nuances, there's dynamics an so forth. And like Ginger says in the movie: You can practice forever an get the most amazing technique an say nothing with it at all. It's a gift that some people have, and we three had it in abundance.

I am a piano player and Ginger makes me want to play the drums. Funny enough I play along to his as rhythm track... I do recommend using Ginger as a metronome when practicing it's a hell of a lot more interesting than tick tock..... his time is as smooth as the burning cigarette in his mouth while he's soloing.

Its funny and I don't mean to troll or to annoy, but I really think he sucks. To each his own. I'll take Ringo, John Bonham, Stewart Copeland or Elvin Jones over Ginger Baker. I just don't get the fascination with this man.

Baker just naturally loves drumming, the more licks he can hit, the better - he is always in a blissful state when he's playing - But apart from being ultra-coordinated he really understood the mechanics of polyrhythmic drumming time-signatures

Yeah, the drums sound incredible. And you have to remember this was back before the drum companies were making different, weird sizes ; they were standard sizes and there weren't many options for drum heads or mikes, either. Basically, 'off the shelf' equipment .... and listen to them! I always though Ginger had a very unique sound to his small tom toms. As many time as I heard him live, they always sounded the exactaly same. But the best trick in this solo was how he changed shirts between 8:00 - 8:15 and back again by 8:30 without stopping , LOL :)

@allrequiredfields
@allrequiredfields 9 лет назад
Jonah Martinez Tuning is definitely part of it - most half-decent drummers of the day would tune their kit jazz-style (super high) and not cover it with tape and blankets. It also has something to do with mics, but that's not my area of expertise.
@jonahmartinez4298
@jonahmartinez4298 6 лет назад
I got it! Consider his shells. 3 ply mahogany Ludwig’s with wide bearing edges. This gives then that fat, round, and warm sound. Also consider he did not dampen his drums. He used coated ambassador heads all around, tuned high. Nothing inside the bass drums- maybe a felt strip touching the head of the 22”, but the 20” was wide open. Lastly, the room surely had a part in the huge sound.

spudfriley Yep, and that's because he was so diverse an got the most out of his drums. His timing, improv skills an four limb Independence is indeed, amazing, an the fact he plays beats on every last piece of his drum kit, he never wasted a single piece. Most drummers just use technique an stick to only a few pieces of their kit an make it look like their doing more than they really are. Not Ginger, as an article said on this number: Baker often produced complementary rhythms on the hi-hat, ride cymbal, double bass and tom-toms simultaneously. It features sustained, imaginative drumming that would knock out a Carnegie jazz audience.
