yes ! huuuge help 😊😊 - you explain very clearly - love the pink box graphics for the edge motifs request 1 - when you copied the edge motifs - I would have liked to see the layers panel - ie - I was thinking of linking layers for the edge motifs -so if you move edge motif A - its copy will also move - cant wait to watch the next vid you suggested request/idea 2 - would love to see u do a vid on say actions script - to do a repeat pattern - at least for the artboard; bounding box; color square etc - never seen that and I think that would make a great vid
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign
@@aine4400 I’m so glad this helped you!!! Thanks for your requests! ***For request 1 when you say “linking” layers, do you mean “grouping” the layers? As in grouping edge Motif A with it’s copy so they move together? I understand what you’re trying to do- good thinking on that! Just want to make sure if you were referring to using grouping specifically, or if you were meaning something other than that. Please let me know. (That made me think of another technique as well which I’ll share in a future video). And for request 2- Great idea! Yes actions can be helpful sometimes for patterns. I’ll put that on my list for videos!
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign
@@aine4400 Hi! Regarding linked layers for edge motifs, here is a video I posted. When I crop, some of the elements in my patterns like detail lines disappear, what should I do?
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign 9 месяцев назад
Hi there! Are the disappearing detail lines stroke lines? The crop function in Pathfinder won't work on strokes. Only on fills. If you need to crop the pattern you would have to expand your strokes (object/ expand) and then crop.

Thank you dear❤But how did you make those watercolour flowers in Ai? 😮Cause they are looks like if were painting in photoshop or any raster program with pixel brushes not vector.
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign
Hi there- You're welcome, and thanks for your question! The individual flowers and leaves used in this video are from a stock website and they were vectorized. Most likely they were originally watercolor painted by hand, scanned in, cleaned up in Photoshop, and then vectorized for use in Illustrator. I have a separate video series showing how to do this on a different watercolor floral. If you want to see the process for doing that, you can watch Parts 1 & 2 of the series. Here are the links: Part 1 How to Scan/ Clean a watercolor image in Photoshop- prep for vectorization: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BYn30F0K1wo.html Part 2 How to Vectorize the Watercolors Adobe Illustrator- here’s the link to that one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bNFM2SWB_sU.html

Hi Rebecca! If I am uploading an image to be used in a pattern, do I need to do image trace on it first or can I use it as is?
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign 10 месяцев назад
Hi Shawn! You can use an image as is. But it won't be as editable as if you were to image trace it. When you Image Trace, the image will become a vector and will be workable if you need to recolor it, or alter the shape later on. Depends how you're planning to use it later.

I can't manage to get the crop to work. When I do it, the shapes in the box disappear and the ones on the outside remain. Not sure what I'm doing wrong...
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign 6 месяцев назад
Hi there! By any chance are the disappearing objects made up of strokes? If they are, the functions in the Pathfinder window (such as the crop function) won't work properly. It will make strokes disappear. If this is the case, you would have to expand your artwork to make it into fills and not strokes. You would do this with Object/ Expand, and then crop it.

@@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign Thanks for your reply. No idea, the images I'm using are .png that I downloaded to try the repeat pattern.
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign 5 месяцев назад
Ok I see. This is also the case with png images. The Pathfinder options such as crop will not work with png images. Pathfinder will only work with vector shapes that are fills (drawn objects). - So with png images, you can follow the same instructions in the video, but when you get to the part where I do Pathfinder/ Crop, you will INSTEAD right click, and select "Make clipping mask". This will give you the crop effect. - After this, go into the layers panel, duplicate the clear box, and keep one clear box at the top of the sublayers where it is, and drag the other one down to the bottom so it's behind all your artwork. Then you can drag the whole thing into the swatches panel to create a repeat swatch from this. - However, I would encourage you to start working with vector artwork going forward instead of flat images like png's because that's really what Illustrator is meant for. - Hope that helps! Let me know how it goes or if you have any more questions.

hi, i have an issue: when i create a pattern i can see white edges around it. I don'T know why because i made sure that it doesn't have any excess (i trimmed it to a perfect square before doing the swatch). And also in patter options > i unchecked the "tile edge" box. Do you know why this happens? thanks!
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign
Hi there. I have a separate video about the white lines issue. I go over a few different scenarios and how to fix it depending on what’s causing it. Here is the link so you can watch it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T7r1TKwqGes.html Let me know if that helps you. However, it sounds like you might be using the Pattern Tool based on what you said about how you unchecked the “tile edge” box. Just FYI- I usually make my patterns the manual way as I am not the biggest fan of the pattern tool. And I have been doing this for a long time. So you might want to try switching over to the manual method which is what I’m showing in this current video that you commented on. But please let me know if the video in the link helps you, or if you’re still having an issue after that. Thanks!

I understand the repeating patterns, but I do t understand why you can’t use the pattern tool? Is it industry standard or the pattern tool doesn’t make a true repeat… I can’t tell when I use it.
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign
@rebeccaartistryfashiondesign 2 года назад
Both the manual method that I used in this tutorial, and the pattern tool method are fine to use. It's a matter of preference. I personally like the manual method more because the pattern tool doesn’t always necessarily give me the exact effect I want. I feel I have more control over my pattern development with the manual way. But the pattern tool does have some nice features and is good for when you want to play with different tile options and preview your repeat as you’re making it. Yes- it does make a true repeat. I think it’s good for everyone to know how to do it both ways and then use the method that you like best.
