Want to design your own seamless patterns in Canva? In this video, I’ll show you step-by-step Canva hacks to easily create beautiful repeating patterns for all kinds of projects! ADDITIONAL TIPS: If you are seeing tiny white lines in your design where the sections meet up, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to slightly nudge the sections together. Depending on the complexity of your design, you might have to fiddle with this a bit. Try also zooming in as far as you can to make sure things line up properly.
Also, If you’re having trouble with elements or text trying to replace the image in the grid when it comes time to fill in any blank spaces, hold down the Command key (Mac) or Alt key (Windows) while moving things around. This will prevent it from snapping into the grid space.

Hi Kat. This video is great, and so helpful. As I know Canva doesn't support 300 dpi. Which converter do you use for this issue?
@thecreativekatstudio
@thecreativekatstudio 11 месяцев назад
Yeah this one is tricky. I hope someday Canva adds the ability to download graphics at 300dpi. For now there are two things you can do, create initial design at the highest possible size (5000 x 5000 px). You can also download the finished design as a PDF Print version since that does download at 300 dpi. You'd then convert it back into an image using one of the many converter websites out there.

You don't have to use transparency. Just set your desired background color first. There are also some sites out there that will remove the background for free. If you want to try the Pro version for 30 days so you can create a transparent pattern, there's a link in the description as well.🙂

Thank you so much for this help! I guess my worry is that those very thin guidelines in between the 4 quadrants would print when the design is printed. I'm assuming this is not the case if the grid spacing is zero. I'm guessing those purple snap lines and very thin white lines we see when lining up each corner are just to help us. Am I the only one worrying about this? Should I be worrying, or is this fine? LOL

@SteveInQLD007 8 месяцев назад
Love this video, took me a few goes to understand why you used the 2 different frames, horizontal & vertical but it eventually made sense for seamless stitching - Thanks heaps. just one question though, if you start off with a 3000x3000px canvas to make your original pattern, save it and download it again and make multiple copies to create your seamless pattern, has your final pattern now multiplied in resolution accordingly? - eg 4 x copies of your original 3000x3000px design now totals 12000x12000px and if so, what does it equate to in dpi as I only need a 300dpi file
@thecreativekatstudio
@thecreativekatstudio 8 месяцев назад
Not exactly. When you download a PNG or JPG from Canva it will only be at a resolution of 96dpi. That is the default size. If you want it higher, you’ll need to click the download button and then drag the “size” slider all the way to the right so it’s at its max size. This will give you a resolution of 288dpi. Yes, this will also increase the over all pixel dimensions as well. If you do this each time you download a piece of the pattern, you’ll get the highest resolution allowed by Canva. Once you’ve put all your pattern pieces together, do a final download at that max size setting to ensure your final pattern is 288dpi. This will give you the cleanest resolution for printing. Right now, the only way to get true 300dpi is with a PDF Print downloads which is also in CMYK colors.

Can you use this technique to make wallpaper ( for walls, not screens)? I think spoonflower for example wants a larger canvas.
@thecreativekatstudio
@thecreativekatstudio 4 месяца назад
You would really need to contact the wallpaper manufacturer to see what their exact spec requirements are for graphic images.

What size would you recommend to use if wanting the seamless for a blanket? 5000x5000?
@thecreativekatstudio
@thecreativekatstudio 8 месяцев назад
You’ll want to find out what the maximum upload size is first for whatever service you’re using to have the blanket printed. Going with a Canva design size of 5000 x 5000 as well as downloading at max dimensions will make it a VERY large file. Probably too large to upload to that service. Once you know what their max upload size is you can test the Canva design file.

Great! But what if the original pattern you create doesn't have empty edges in the first place. For example, if I want to create a camouflage pattern that goes to all for edges, the various shapes and colors of the camo may not align when I duplicate them, so it doesn't end up being a seamless design.
@thecreativekatstudio
@thecreativekatstudio 4 месяца назад
Super intricate patterns like camo don’t work as well with this particular method. This is better suited to patterns that have white space or breathing room between the elements.

I find that this does not work when making gift wrap with my icon pattern. I have to overlap the design which looks strange. Do you have a fix for making gift wrap patterns?
@thecreativekatstudio
@thecreativekatstudio 4 месяца назад
It's really going to depend on the spacing you're using when you create your original pattern. You might have to adjust it a bit for it to properly line up. What I'd recommend is take the width of the wrapping paper (I think in Canva it's 29.25 inches), then divide that by 4 (which comes to 7.3125 inches). So you’d create a 7.3125 x 7.3125 inch square and use that as your initial design size. See if that helps.

Hi! Thanks for this video! I just have one question, how do these digital files transfer when they are uploaded to Cricut design space? I am having trouble with the ones I created on Canva being blurry in design space? They are fine in all other programs, but for some reason design space is telling me that the resolution is too low, which is crazy because they are all 3600px X 3600px. So I am stumped.
@thecreativekatstudio
@thecreativekatstudio 8 дней назад
For Cricut, try saving the final pattern as an SVG instead of PNG. That will keep the resolution high and should be clean enough for Design Space.

The white lines are infuriating. No possible way to make it work, they're there to stay. 🙃
@thecreativekatstudio
@thecreativekatstudio 3 месяца назад
It really depends on how intricate your design is. I've found that larger elements tend to line up a bit better than ones with a lot of tiny details. Also, Canva tends to shrink the pattern ever so slightly when it's inserted into a frame. That could be what's causing issues as well. You just have to play with it a bit. For something super detailed, it's possible that this "grid" method does not work, so in that case you would need to manually place your elements that you want to make seamless halfway on and halfway off the page. Takes a little more time to do it that way so they line up, but it can be done. Hope that helps.🙂

Is it possible to make the background gradient for repeating patterns ? I tried but in the end it turned out so bad
@thecreativekatstudio
@thecreativekatstudio 26 дней назад
Gradient backgrounds are a little finicky. One suggestion would be to either do a vertical or horizontal gradient using 3 colors so that the ones on each side would match up with the next piece of the pattern. Example: blue, green, blue. That way the blue sides would match the next part of the pattern. Does that make sense?

Great video but I am trying to do the last step you are on where you add in gaps and I notice you are still in grid so when I do this it puts the whole image into a grid section so doesn't let me fill the gaps in.... I feel like I need to go to college to get this right lol

Do you see the seam when you put the finished pattern together? If so, just give it a nudge with the arrow keys on your keyboard. Depending on how you create the pattern it might need a bit of adjusting when it's all put together.🙂

@@thecreativekatstudio The image does show up but its see through. If you watch you video on page 2 and 3, when you move your transparent pattern to the grid that is verticle and horizontal it shows with a white background even though its transparent. Mine used to do that but it just shows up clear now.

What else I should have knowledge of before starting this project? I am literally terrified since I have no knowledge of this & would love to start learning for personal gifting 😉 I would use Canva Pro...just need all the helpful information from a knowledgeable person. What would you recommend? Thank you so kindly for your time 😊
@thecreativekatstudio
@thecreativekatstudio 5 месяцев назад
Every printing service has their own upload size and resolution requirements so I recommend you check that out first in Printify FAQ section. Then make your Canva design so that it fits those dimensions. Some patterns will work better than others when it comes to printing on fabric, so take a look at what some other people have done with Printify as a reference.

@thecreativekatstudio
@thecreativekatstudio 7 месяцев назад
Sometimes when creating patterns Canva doesn't always bring everything to the edges on the final part of the design. It depends on the complexity of your pattern. When you upload for the last time and add each quarter section to your final layout, you might have to use your arrow keys to nudge them once or twice toward the center. That's because even though it shows that it's aligned with the purple guide lines, it might not be. Zoom all the way in as far as you can to see where the gaps are, and nudge the pieces into place.

For this example I used 3000 x 3000 pixels because I wanted a nice clean design. But you can use any size really. However, I don’t recommend going below 1000 pixels because of the risk it will look pixelated and blurry when you’re done.

Hello, I am new to all of this. Are we permitted to use the templates on Canva as they are or by law do we need to change them? I ask in case there are templates for seamless patterns we already like. Thank you!
@thecreativekatstudio
@thecreativekatstudio 3 месяца назад
Per Canva's terms of service, you cannot use the templates as is, you have to change them enough that they do not closely resemble the original. In the case of the seamless patterns within Canva, since those are already fully created, you can only use them for personal things. You cannot use them to sell any type of digital or physical products. Canva provided an explanation for using content in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FVR4sIrLdA8.html

If you are seeing tiny white lines in your design where the sections meet up, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to slightly nudge the sections together. Depending on the complexity of your design, you might have to fiddle with this a bit. Try also zooming in as far as you can to make sure things line up properly.

One question/problem I've had is that when I copy an image from the first canvas to fill some dead space on the final canvas, the image jumps into the grid filling it out, it doesn't just sit on the image like yours did. So my get around was to download it and then fill in the spaces.

I don't understand why do you have to use the grid when you already created the pattern earlier.
@thecreativekatstudio
@thecreativekatstudio 3 месяца назад
Using the grid method ensures that when you piece the pattern together for larger projects, all of the images will line up correctly without having any unwanted dead space. You don't have to use the grid if you're happy with the way your initial pattern looks as far as spacing.
