Create Amazing Layering | Polychromos | World of Flowers

Elevate your colouring by mastering the art of layering. When it comes to our oil-based pencils like Faber-Castell Polychromos, nothing brings out their best like layering. Today we are going to be working in World of Flowers by Johanna Basford, and we are going to be working on how to layer Polychromos coloured pencils in adult colouring books.
For this picture I'm using Faber-Castell Polychromos, Sakura Gelly Roll, and Posca pens. I am also using a soft, white, wax-based pencil for some of the highlights. I'll come back with the exact colours over the next few days, but if you like to get some pencils out before you start, you can get out your earthy greens, your violets, magentas and pinks, a few ultramarines and cobalt blues, yellows, oranges and creams.
I will show you how to layer some great colour combinations that will help you create depth in your picture.

I prefer real time. I select a video and work on color pencil portraits while listening to you and the music. It keeps me grounded. I also use your techniques in my work and my coloring books. I love what you do and appreciate your sharing for all to see.

Hi, i think with the speed videos its hard to see the process. As I progress with my colouring, its very helpfull to see the layering in real time, I really learn a lot, so thank you ❤

I definitely get that, and I really appreciate your feedback. If I do them at all, it would be in addition to a realtime video of the same page. I’m thinking I might do it if I’ve had a page we’ve done in a few parts, so that there’s a timelapse version.

I’m glad you like it. I’ll work through the video and make a list of the pencils very soon (hopefully later today), which should make it easier. There are two pencils I have that have the name rubbed out, which are Earth Green Yellowish and Light Magenta. I also have a lot of the other earthy greens (everything from earth green yellowish to chrome oxide green if you have them in the factory order) and green gold, the ultramarines and cobalts (the turquoise pencils too, but mainly for part 2). You want most of your violets and pinky purples, as well as magenta, and some darker carmine pinks. Then some yellows and yellowed orange. For shading I mainly use Dark Indigo, payne’s grey, black and Burnt Siena. Hope that helps a little.

May I ask how you get the gelly roll white to not scratch off when colouring over it? I am using a Signio and it seems to be only able to be used after colouring to stay on

I find the Sakura Gelly Rolls are better at sticking compared to Signo, especially if you leave it for a minute to dry first. I also colour very lightly over it, so that I won’t scratch it. Occasionally I have to touch up a little afterwards, but usually not too much.
