+djlolypop Rope is loosing strength on every knot and bend. Under tension jacket will also fray if there is any movement. It can also melt. Sunlight and chemicals will destroy polymer on contact points. So under ideal condition new cord may be 550lbs strong but in real life you need x3 safety factor for it.
Ary Cave oh okay, that's interesting to know. In theory could you use 2 or 3 paracord ropes in the configuration in this video and loop them through the carbiner like he did, and would the 3 ropes have the weight distributed over them to get that safety factor you are talking about? Just in theory since that wouldnt be very practical. Just interested in how it all works, thanks for any information.
+neolithic3 short answer will be yes 3 is better than 1. And yes, it is impractical. There is 6, 7, and 8mm available cord that can be used as single rope. Then there are different types of modern polymer like Dacron and Spectra for example more durable than nylon. Also be aware of what looks like paracord sold in home depot and Walmart sometimes it is nylon jacket stuffed with polypropilene waste instead of twisted strains. That one is about 50-80 lbs under ideal load.
