Create bootable Windows 11 installation USB from macOS
In this video I will explain how to create a bootable USB drive for Windows 11 installation from macOS. This can be used to install Windows 12 on both an Apple Mac but also on a regular PC. There is no need for bootcamp assistant or another Windows-based system.

I have to say thank you for this great tutorial. I was having issues for ages with my desktop, and needed to create an installation USB, but only have a macbook to do it from at present. This video made that super easy! Thanks a million for sharing your expertise.

Hello! I finished building my first PC today but I only have a Macbook at home. I found this guide and did exactly what you did and it worked perfectly. My computer booted up with windows and everything seems to be working. My key works. Thank you for this guide it was very thorough and simple to follow.

@@jensdbe im the same as Kabel, but now when I plug in the USB to the PC I built, it doesn't show up as an option for booting. I'm in the BIOS for my motherboard, but I only see one boot option - my hard drive. I followed along with the video and my USB files look exactly the same as in the video. Any tip for troubleshooting?

In the command at 7:42, I had to replace wimlib-imagex split with wimsplit for it to work. It must have updated or something ig. Please like this so more people can see it!

its not usually the "split" part of the command that needs review its the last few commands "/install.swm 4000" make sure there is no space between this command and the previous command before it because you if you follow this video step by step for some reason there ends up being a space there when there shouldn't be and remember your in terminal where its very case sensitive

You are a life saver, just purchased new 12th Gen Intel processor and Asus MOBO and did not have any windows computers to install the new windows 11 OS. After many failed attempts I was ready to return my computer, I believe formatting the usb to Fat/Fat32 was the key part, I followed other forums using the brew and wimlib, tried multiple macos apps and had no success.Thank you kind sir!

Thanks a million. I was facing a problem with my old laptop which runs a windows machine, and having a MacBook Pro now didn't make things easy for creating a bootable USB drive for Windows. Jesus, this video saved me. I just bought a HP Victus 15 and windows 11 separately. Win11 usb didn't work and I only had one mac to make a bootable usb with the windows 11 ISO file. I tried many many things and fortunately I found your video. Worked at first try. Thanks for the help! Great video!!!!

This fixed a problem I was having with the installer asking for drivers. I was just using balena etcher to write the ISO to a USB. Doing this has fixed my issue! Thank you so much :)

As many of these other comments say, this was the first video i found that was incredibly helpful. I am moving from my macbook pro to building my first gamiong pc and this was the last part i needed! This video was so straightforward and easy to follow along. Where other videos skipped over the part if you have am M1 mac, yours did not. Thank you! Hopefully when I boot up my new custom PC, after building it everything goes according to plan!!!

Very helpful, thank you. Glad you mentioned the extra steps for the M1 Mac. For me, there were three commands that I had to run and were listed in terminal. A simple copy/paste of the three commands worked. Again, great video, thank you! :)

Hi my installation of wimlib always hangs in the terminal window on the line make, just after "installing wimlib dependency: openssl@3" any ideas how to get past this? I'm on Big Sur on a really old 2014 macbook pro

So I got to the final step and when I tried the Wimlib-imagex split. The terminal told me that the it failed cause imagine could not be found. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Only video that actually helped worked on newest version of Mac OS as the time of writing this. Only tip I can give cause all I did was follow the instructions word for word is NAME THE USB STICK THE SAME THING AS HE DID and use his linked blog to easy copy and paste. I named my something else and was wondering why it didn’t work.

my win11 has install.esd file instead of install.wim and wimlib won't split the esd file

If you have an .esd file, there is a good chance that it is not larger than 4GB so you can directly copy it to the USB drive. As far as I know all ISOs do come with .wim instead of .esd though.

Hey jensd_be, my friends computer recently corrupted and he wiped the harddrive within the bios tools. While trying make a windows install on his old mac, we ran into the issue of winlib not supporting his old mac 10.13. Do you know any other work arounds?

Hello Jensd for the video, After following all the steps from the video, I face my mouse not working once opening the windows installer blue screen. HOw can I fix it? Hi. I just built a computer and I'm trying to install windows on it. I used your method since my other computer is a mac. Upon installing and the computer restarting I get a message that says "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error". I can't seem to get around this screen and finish install. Any suggestions?

Correct, none of the Intel Macs are officially supported on Windows 11 but its pretty easy to work around that.

Hi ! I am on MSI trident 3, I followed your tutorial exactly, but as soon as I wanted to start the Windows installation, the program wrote that it could not find the .wim file. I divided it, but it doesn't seem to recognize the .swm files... Do you have any ideas? Thanks 🙏

Double-check that the output in the wimlib-x split command is to your USB drive in the /sources folder. You can check if you see those two .swm files there.

Legend! Thanks so much for the helpful video. I had to go through so many other options before I found this one which worked. The only issue I had the resolve at the beginning was in Disk Utility. I had to go to the "View" menu and switch from "Show Only Volumes" to "Show All Devices". Just in case other people are having issues with the Scheme not appearing as an option.

Maybe check if you are really booting from the USB drive. You could also try switxhing between UEFI or legacy mode.

Make sure you got the output directory correct and the splitted files (.swm) are in the sources folder on your USB drive.

You seem to be missing a space between ls and -1. The command is ls -1 /Volumes/

I followed all steps, when I get to the Brew portion and i have to split the drive using : split /Volumes/CCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9/sources/install.wim /Volumes/WINUSB/sources/install.swm 4000 just says command not found. I have followed all steps and can't get past this part. Any recommendations?

The command is not "split" but "wimlib-imagex split". Possibly you forgot the actual wimlib-imagex command.

Sure, you can create a bootable USB drive first with the info from this video. Then boot from the USB drive on your mac by holding Alt/Option during boot and selecting the drive. Hi when i read the title of your video i thought it was a different thing. So now i have a question about what i'm trying to do. Install windows 11 in a external drive, bootable in MAC M1. I don't know why Mac is not recognezing my external drive when i boot. It can recognize it in finder thought. I would like to avoid parallel and run windows 11 outside MacOs env. Can you help me?

Do you have the install.swm files in the sources folder on your USB drive? Possibly something went wrong while splitting the file.

That is strange. Maybe try to re-erase the USB drive or try another one. I have a feeling something is not 100% with that drive.

Absolutely the clearest instruction and explanation for how to do this in autumn of 2022. I've been researching this for hours. Previous methods involve third party software like Uubyte that is no longer free. Thanks for your help, this would've been a headache without this video.
