Brent, thanks a lot for your guide. This is really valuable information. I have studied all your tutorials on the topic and just tested my hero 9 with filters. With a frame rate of 60 it looks just as cool and smooth, nice blur around the edges, and a sharp picture in the middle. I bought cheap filters from aliexpress, and 3D printed an adapter, taking into account the use of a silicone case for the camera. Thanks for your hard work!

Hey Brent, love this video series. I have a question. I usually shoot 4K on my Gopro Hero 8, edit it on DaVinci on a 4K timeline and export it as 4K to upload to youtube to get the vp9 codec. All of this works great. Today I noticed though that watching the video on my 1080p screen at 4K on youtube was WAY sharper and higher quality than watching it on the 1080p option. The 1080p stream was way blurrier and had some artifacts that were not present on the 4K stream. Even though my monitor is only 1080p. Why does this happen? And, more importantly, how can I fix this so that my 1080p stream is as sharp so everybody on 1080p screens can watch it as clearly as the 4K stream looks? Is this a RU-vid compression thing? Sorry if this is confusing. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Hey Siddharth I edit in 1920X960 mainly (yes, this is a bit of a strange ratio, but I love the 2x1 aspect ratio). You might want to try some experiments.... try to work out why it is happening. I mainly watch videos on a 1080 stream (HD), so that is what I'm using to judge my work. After a ton of experimentation with both the capture, the edit and the export, I'm happy with my image quality now.

Interesting video Brent. I few thoughts as someone who has done a fair bit of video. Doing two pass VBR at 50/50 is no better than CBR at 50. The multi pass would normally analyze the video and use more data in high motion/detail areas. If the average and max are the same it won't I believe do anything except create a longer render. Also taking a 1080 timeline and resizing to 2.7 k seems less than ideal as you would be effectively blowing up the image. Why not change your timeline setting in Premiere and export a true 2.7 k timeline? Assuming you are shooting in greater than 1080 to start with. Interesting about the two CODECS on YT. I checked and seems all my videos which are 1080 uploads are in VP09. Looking forward to more videos. Cheers.
@brentbat
@brentbat 3 года назад
Hey there Awesome Players, thanks for your note. On the first point, thanks for the info on CBR vs VBR... It was always my understanding that VBR was superior than CBR and VBR2 provided the best quality compression strategy, but I'm not an expert on compression algorithms for sure. I think the key point is still valid... the default data rates are too low for motorcycle videos which have huge amounts of the image that are moving between keyframes. So do you use CBR or VBR1? On the second point (why not edit at 2.7K) rather than up-rezing? Two reasons that are connected. 1) Most people watch videos at 1080p and I feel that HD is good enough quality for the videos that I'm making. I'm not doing it professionally, but as a hobby etc. 2) I find that if Im using a higher-res timeline then my computer is going to struggle during the edit. Perhaps not initially, but when I start adding effects etc, it will battle. Yes, I could created proxy files and do that, but when I consider point (1), I ask myself why. Oh, and a third reason, at 1080p, I have more flexibility in reframing in post, while I often just scale down 4K to 50%, When I'm really taking my time, I'll often be reframing in post to get the shots composed perfectly (or as perfect as I can :-) Appreciate the comment.
@brentbat
@brentbat 3 года назад
I one more point... Your last sentence said that your videos that are 1080 are in vp09. OK, I have a theory on this, but I think it is just a theory at this point. vp09 has been around for a number of years. I think when they first implemented it, they were quite sparing about who got access to it because RU-vid were worried it would kill their servers due to increased server load. Because it is a higher quality codec, I think they want to use it for ALL their videos eventually, and they are on a staged rollout. I think that when you upload video, if the encoding servers are not loaded heavily, they will give you vp09 at any resolution you upload, but I think if they are busy, then you get avc1 unless your 2.7K or greater. What do you think?
@AwesomePlayers
@AwesomePlayers 3 года назад
@@brentbat Hi Brent. I compress at 30 to 50 Mbps CBR using H264. I don't bother with VBR since it is all about getting a lower average data rate while allowing data spikes to optimize quality in a smaller file size. Very handy when trying to max out the amount of video on a DVD/BluRay or USB key. For VBR to work the average and max numbers have to be different. A CBR clip at 15 won't be as nice as a VBR clip at 15 with a max of 30 even though both files will be the same size. Adobe maxes out at 50 so you're already compressing every frame at the maximum quality in CBR. Sometimes on shorter clips I will just upload the ProRes 422 directly. About 1 gig per minute. In my tests I didn't see any noticeable difference between the ProRes or high bitrate H264. Seems the damage is really being done by RU-vid at that point. I agree about 1080. I still finish in 1080 as well as it is smoother on my system and allows for cropping when needed. My question is about resizing the 1080 to 2.7. That will certainly have a quality penalty as you are doing a 40% blow up. Perhaps that outweighs the loss in quality if your videos are being compressed by YT to AVC. I'm not a big Premiere user but I wonder if could edit in 1080 and then just before export switch your project settings to 2.7k. Then the 4K footage would be scaled to 2.7K and output directly as opposed to being scaled from 4K to 1080 and then upscaled to 2.7. Don't mean to clutter up your comments but i find this stuff interesting. If you ever want to chat you can find my info at AwesomePlayers.com. Cheers.
@AwesomePlayers
@AwesomePlayers 3 года назад
@@brentbat I've heard they are moving to an all VP9 scheme. A few articles have stated that low volume channels get AVC as YT is rationing computing power. I do know that when I do a video Premiere even at 1080 the videos look crappy with a lot of compression artifacts but then when I view them later the quality is noticeably improved. Next time I do a Premiere I will try the right click trick and see what's up. Apparently now videos at 50 or 60 FPS also go to VP9 even if at 1080. I checked my old stuff and it looks like it is VP9 starting in 2013.
@brentbat
@brentbat 3 года назад
@@AwesomePlayers .. A fellow geek! Love it! Thanks on the info on VBR... I've learnt something which is great. Yes, I also did tests with exporting using ProRes and came to the same conclusion.... Quality is obviously better, but files sizes are huge... and the incremental improvement in quality is not worth dealing with such HUGE files sizes. Regarding the up-rez to 2.7K from 1080p. Yes, you are interpolating more pixels, but as most people are watching back on 1080p windows or mobile, I don't think there is any perceptible loss in quality. If you were watching TRUE 2.7K vs 1080p that is upscaled, yes you would see a difference... but as I mentioned, I'm happy with a high quality 1080p finished product anyway. I don't think it is possible to change sequence settings in Premiere once it's created, and if you did, I don't know how it could possibly handle that. A lot of my shots are reframed slightly in the edit, so I don't know how it would deal with that. You certainly aren't cluttering my comments, if people aren't interested, they can skip it. I'm certainly interested and will go check out your site.

I just uploaded a video after following your instructions and I have some questions: 1- My camera captures at 50 FPS. You set only 23 FPS , don't you lose quality? 2- My maximum bitrate (CC version 2015) also allows you to select 300 per second. I only set 50 in your recommendation - but is it worth striving for as much as possible? anyway I hope it will force youtube to upgrade it to vp9...
@brentbat
@brentbat 3 года назад
Hey Orpaztron On Q1, No you don't lose quality... The reason that I edit at 24fps (technically 23.976) is that this is the frame rate that cinemas use, and it gives a more "cinematic feel" to finished video. Some people say that sports should be shotat 30fps, but I want my videos to have a more cinematic feel which is why I set at that rate. So I shoot at 60fps but edit at 24fps. If I'm editing the video at normal speed, then the editor just ignores the extra frames and pulls in the 24 frames it needs... the rest are sitting there but not shown. The advantage that you have in shooting at a higher frame rate is that you can do slowmo. So if you shoot at 50fps, and you edit at 24fps, then you can slow your video down to 1/2 speed and then those extra frames that you shot are used to create silky smooth slow motion. I hope that makes sense. On Q2, Theoretically more is better but like anything there will be diminishing returns. Why don't you do a quick experiment. Render at 50mbps and then at 300mpbs and see if you can see any difference, and then for the fun of it... render at 5mbps and see the impact of too high compression on your content.
@orpaztron

@@brentbat thanks for the detailed explanation. The last video I uploaded still shows avc1. I'll wait another day as you recommended. My files are large and a 20 minute video encoded at 300 bitrate reaches 30 GB .... so I gave up :)

@brentbat 3 года назад
@@orpaztron Well you answered your question about why not use 300mbps :-) Not sure how long since you uploaded your video that shows avc1, but it might be that the RU-vid servers are busy. Hi Hagibis, you are absolutely right, H.265 is the later encoder (and technically superior codec), but I decided to not use that for my demo because some people may not have computers that support it yet.
