The Cubase Chord Track (and chord pads) is probably the one reason why I'd never switch to another DAW. It's stellar.

I wish someone would explain how to use this in the way an absolute beginner can follow. This is the facility I most want to use but so far have totally failed to get the chord track to trigger an instrument selection. There must be something glaringly obvious that I just can't see!!! Any advice would be gratefully received.
@der_vur
@der_vur 6 месяцев назад
@@SwanSycorax I don't know if you still need this as the comment was made 1 year ago, but basically under the name of the chord track you have three buttons and on their right a selection field. By default is at "Use monitored track". If you click there you will see all the other VST tracks you have on the project in this way you can select which track will have the chords triggered by the chord track. I hope this helpful if not to you anymore to somebody else passing by :)
@benhughes2355
@benhughes2355 3 года назад
Yes please. More in depth, maybe touch on modulation. Also, the settings for the chord track, how to constrain the range of notes (some of my vst's require chord input within a certain range which the chord track regularly strays out of) , etc. 👍🏻

I think that knowing music theory can give you a lot of freedom when it comes to music creation but this is an excellent way for people that are not familiar with music theory to be creative as well! Well done Dom! Great presentation as always!
@DomSigalas
@DomSigalas 3 года назад
Iro! That's exactly the point! Learning music theory is always a great idea but if you don't you don't need to be limited when you want to create the music you have in your head :)
@ipoponq
@ipoponq 3 года назад
@Aziri Alain I couldn't agree with your statement. You're might be limited to music theory as well and your head won't give you something very interesting if you have 0 creativity. Speaking of myself, I love composing without even thinking in what key I am, for instance. You may even come up with an idea, tone or melody in your head and then help yourself with the arrangement using theory or tools. Furthermore, when you don't feel that way but still have to make music required, then musical background as well as modern tools may help you out a lot. Sorry if I get you wrong. But of course just mindlessly dragging chords without a good sense or what so ever are doubtfully gonna lead you to something good.
@ric88keys
@ric88keys 2 года назад
@@DomSigalas I think theory and 'head ideas' feed off each other, making the overall experience enriched.
@ric88keys
@ric88keys 2 года назад
Definitely, the more theory I studied, the better my ideas became, the better my ideas became, the more I wanted to study. If taught or learnt in a practical way, theory doesn't have to be boring or difficult (I've heard others describe it as this). Instead it is like a door opening to a more fascinating musical dimension.

One or a couple of in-depth videos on Chord Track (and Chord Pads) would be highly appreciated! As far as I am concerned, your point re getting creative and finding progressions one’s muscle memory wouldn’t let discover different, more interesting options is absolutely correct! And getting ideas for points to start using tools like that beyond the points one ends up just playing around with it would be both, helpful and inspiring. That said, yes, please share more on this (and your experience), thank you very much in advance!

Would be interesting to make a video about Chords Track as it relate to a string ensemble arrangement (violins I, violins2, violas, cellos) or a string quartet. Dom, why don't you give a shot? That would be very useful.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! I just love when you have your chords down, how a instrument track can follow the chords or scale(s) and you can just solo away! Or easily transpose the midi that you get from the media bay (patterns and stuff) and how they easily transpose to you chordtrack. Even creating harmony voicings is a breeze using chord track! So yeah, do another video and talk about stuff like that and the stuff I haven't found or figured out yet!

@12:04 Using "Assign Pad from MIDI Input" (by right-clicking on a pad) I've found that the chord pad feature can cope with basic, diatonic chords patterns, but it doesn't play back correctly when you try anything more complicated, which is a big shame. So, you input a chord, & it plays back correctly the 1st time, but then after playing a different pad, then returning to the original pad, it is now playing a completely different set of notes that it was outputting originally.

I've been trying to work on chord progressions and learning the circle of fifths for a while now, and this video just made it all click suddenly. Ive been using Bandlab, because when I first tried cubase I had almost no knowledge of what I was doing and it was super intimidating. But if you make more awesome tutorials like this, I may reconsider. It definitely seems like a more comprehensive and powerful tool for music composition.

I'm rather new to Cubase and to me it is a complex DAW. I'm used to FL Studio mostly. Now I start to find some regular time to play with Cubase so anything in depth would be cool. I know about that feature since quite some time but seeing it used practically is nice to say the least. I feel it difficult sometimes to really assess the value of a feature without having a clear demo.
