Watch as I share my process of creating loose and intuitive abstract paintings with acrylic paint. In this art demo, I'll be using four colors - alizarin crimson, green gold, mars black, and titanium white to create a vibrant and expressive painting.
What I love about intuitive abstract painting is that it allows me to let go of any preconceived notions and paint from a place of pure intuition. This means that every stroke and mark is made spontaneously, without any pre-planning or sketching beforehand. It's a freeing and meditative experience that lets me tap into my creativity and express myself in a unique way.
I start by mixing alizarin crimson, green gold, and white on my palette and then using a large brayer to apply the paint to the sketchbook to start my background. I use a variety of tools such as a charcoal pencil, silicone paint brush, catalyst wedge, palette knife, and fine tip applicator to create a textured and dynamic surface. As I work, I let my instincts guide me and respond to the colors and shapes that are emerging on the paper.
One of the key elements of this type of painting is the idea of letting go of control and allowing the paint to do its own thing. I embrace the imperfections and accidents that happen along the way, knowing that they all contribute to the overall character of the piece.
Throughout the video, you'll see me adding layers of color, using different brushstrokes, and experimenting with different techniques to create a loose and expressive painting. I want to show you that anyone can create an intuitive abstract painting, regardless if you’re a beginner or an advanced artist.
So, grab your acrylic paints and join me on this journey of creating a loose and intuitive abstract painting. Let's embrace the unexpected and see where the process takes us.

Love this piece and the colors! I never have a subject - just pick a few colors and start and usually give it more thought after the paint is on the paper.

I love this style of painting. It's a good-feel type of art. I still haven't found my style yet and keep shifting from one to another, but I always come back to the loose and intuitive abstract paintings. I just found your channel and am really glad I did. I love your work! Thank you.

Thanks so much, Denice! Although it may seem like it from these videos, I haven't found my lane yet either and bounce around from style to style. For now, I kind of like it that way. Thank you for watching!

Thank you! I am a beginner. I love abstract art but don't know how to go about it. Your videos are very inspiring and gave me some nice ideas. I always wondered how to start. Choosing a colour palette seems to be a wise thing to do. Playing around with colours and not getting to attached is a challenge. Thanks again. I'm learning a lot from your videos. Please keep posting them. 🙏🌻

Thanks, Brigit! I'm so glad you've started painting. Abstract art is so much fun, frustrating at times, but so exciting and dynamic! My advice is to play and experiment with many small paintings. Thanks for watching and keep painting!🎨

Thanks for your videos, they are very inspirational when I feel stuck. In addition to rotating and using mats, I have a mirror mounted above my work surface and lift my pieces for a mirrored view which I find helpful with various issues or ideas. I am new to abstract, which for years intimidated me. Now its my primary "subject". Again, thank you for sharing. RU-vid and artists who share processes has been instrumental in getting me back into painting. Oh, and Frog Tape. Yellow Frog Tape. If you haven't tried it, do. I find it less likely to pull paint and tear paper than the blue painter's tape. It's a bit pricey, though.
@chrisloudart
@chrisloudart Год назад
Hey, Sybil! Thanks for the suggestions! I've never thought of using a mirror, but that is a brilliant idea to give a different perspective. I've also never heard of frog tape, but looked it up and placed an order so I can give it a try. Blue painters tape is hit or miss for me. Thanks again!

@@chrisloudart I was just painting and came back to mention another frustration with blue tape that I have had good experience with the frog tape. Seepage. Very, very minimal seepage. And the minimal seepage is probably user error due to past blue tape trauma. Ok. I will shut up now.
@chrisloudart
@chrisloudart Год назад
Haha, no need to shut up. I definitely have issues with seepage when using blue tape. I think I will have quite a bit on this morning's warm-up painting when I remove the tape.

Great little demo... i was feeling daunted by the amount of black appearing at one point. My takeaway is that I want to keep experimenting with a reduced palette, as this tends to allow to work on tone and contrast. I have a tendency to start with brushstrokes and markmaking before applying colour. Maybe i will try starting with a minimal background first... thank you, Chris.👍😊👍
@chrisloudart
@chrisloudart Год назад
Thanks, Emmanuel! I go back and forth on using much black. I typically like to use small amounts if any, but thought I would play with the contrast between the black and lighter values in this one.

Hi Chris, greetings from New Zealand, I am a recent subscriber to your channel, I am really enjoying your videos. I am mostly an intuitive painter of semi abstract and abstract works. I especially like finding the conclusion to a painting within, with no preconceived ideas beforehand. I use acrylic and having studied as a print maker I often use found objects to imprint onto the surface, as part of the under layers or on top. I also use failed experiments torn up as collage pieces. Have you tried using any printing or stamping in your work? As I am new here I have not viewed all your back posts but I intend to. Thanks for the inspiration, have a great day!

Hey Glynis! How's everything in New Zealand? Thanks for watching! I do some mixed media with print, collage, and some stamps (mostly homemade.) I'm fairly new to that world, but I'm quickly learning how much fun it is. I have done a few mixed media videos. It sounds like we are in the same mindset when it comes to enjoying the journey that creating a piece of art takes us on.😊

Hi Chis, thank you for sharing your process with us. I am new to your channel and I am looking forward to watching past and future episodes. I am new to abstraction and find myself constantly being tight. I try to paint intuitively but find myself forcing the outcome. What sketchbooks do you recommend. The one you are using seems to take a lot!😊
@chrisloudart
@chrisloudart Год назад
Hey Sam! Yeah, I think its pretty normal to get tight. Something that I've done to help myself with that is to use a larger brush and put a few brush stroke down, stop, and walk away for a few minutes. Come back and flip the painting to a new orientation and start painting again. Also hold the brush at the very end of the handle to give up some of the control. Just some things to try. Right now I am switching between a Canson mixed -media sketchbook (amzn.to/44Ii4mX) and a Grumbacher watercolor sketchbook (amzn.to/44K6d81). The Grumbacher is nice because you can remove the paper and re-insert them. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Could u look to minuto 9:15 @ u painting? What's telling you? Do u think that could be the one? I like u art, but in one painting u do like 2 to me, but as long as you enjoy, I like to watch u videos, but what do you think in the minute 9:15 what it tells you? Thank u and be happy 😊
@chrisloudart
@chrisloudart Год назад
Hey, Maria! I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you asking what my thoughts were of the painting?
@mariaisabelgarciavazquez9675
@@chrisloudart yeah if u stop the video in that minutes that I ask you, I hope u have time to see it and what are u thoughts when you see it again, I like that part, I feel like it was done there, but u didn't. So if u see it again I would like to know what do u thing about that part. I really like it but I think u didn't cause you continue painting, the end is good, but if u have time please let me know what do u think about minute 9:15, thanks
@chrisloudart
@chrisloudart Год назад
I wonder if you're looking at the length of the video which is 9:15 minutes long. Is it possibly at 6:15? There were a couple of times that I felt I could have stopped and the painting would have worked.
@mariaisabelgarciavazquez9675
Actually I been totally wrong w the minuts😮 it was at minut 3:57, when u put the frame on
@mariaisabelgarciavazquez9675
I want to answer at the other one but I lost it, I can't find it, I was walking when I saw it and now I'm at home and I can't find that video, could u send me a message on that video, I hope I'm not being saying things that I shouldn't, is just I like u paintings a lot and I feel is done, but u continue painting although u end of the painting is good. I don't know if I'm expressing myself correctly, I don't want to be rude, is just I wonder what we're u thoughts, sorry I may not be expressing correctly. also to tell u all this here is uncomfortable to explain.
