Create movement with rhythmic modulation

When your elements lack movement or have a bit of a boring timbre, realise that you can use an essential tool in electronic music: rhythmic modulation!
The idea here is that we spice up otherwise static elements with a rhythmic dimension, but instead of playing new notes, we modulate some parameters (like filter cutoffs) with a rhythmic modulator like Ableton Live's Shaper device, or Reason's Matrix sequencer.

Hi Oscar. I've been making music for 20 years and only recently I decided to look at a tutorial or two, and I found you. You're the best teacher on youtube, hands down. My production has moved up so fast thanks to your tips... and I'm not even using Abelton, I''m on Reason 4 and I'm not even making dance music, I'm doing acoustic guitar and singing (mainly), and yet your advice is universal and has helped me a lot. Cheers.

If you prefer a more native solution in Ableton, just using automation or modulation in the timeline is another option. I feel Ableton's native automation features are often overlooked. Just draw in the rhythmic modulation in a one bar segment, bounce it down to audio, and loop it. Using this workflow, it is easy to create a couple of different rhythmic variations that you can then use in your arrangement, like a calmer version for the break, a higher energy version as a b part, and perhaps some versions that transition smoothly between energy levels.

Done that with a synth in diva that literally made my cpu throttle, bounced audio with a 16 bar loop and frequency automation and from there I started processing with eq, delays and whatnot

Very good tutorial, but I cant get shaper after the intsrument and autofilter like you do, Ableton will not let me put shaper after the autofilter and before and after delay in device view. Ableton says shaper has to before instrument and if I try adding another shaper it joins the first shaper first in the chain. what am I doing wrong?
@lwpweb

would be nice if you could add elements of abletons groove pool into the shaper or as modulating part of lfo's.

Hi, what i don’t understand in the shaper. You are putting every 16th a note in a random pattern, but what are you in fact saying with that to the shaper? I don’t get it.

Wow this is the first of your videos where I'm _really_ aware of how good I have it in Bitwig xD Yea, no tutorials exist for it because it's super niche. But the way you can modulate things in Bitwig just seems infinitely more powerful than Ableton :') Anyway, thanks for this video! This is a neat trick, I'm gonna try stealing your pattern and settings for this song I'm working on right now that has a piano lead and it just needs a bit more "oompf" :)
@Noldy__

There are some good Bitwig channels that have excellent tutorials. And I agree about how easy it is to modulate things in Bitwig, hehe
@partialobject
@partialobject Год назад
It is very powerful. The flip side, I believe, is that you need to do more of your routing and customizing yourself, which can slow you down while being in the zone. At least that one of the reasons why I ultimately went back to Ableton.

Something oddly funny about the “that’s a weird ass sound..” at 5:50. Oscar, I have kind of a specific question / request. I really like this duo called Demdike Stare. They make super gritty, ugly, harsh IDM stuff (my favorite). They have a track called At It Again, where there is this motif of blending really crisp drum production with a ton of noise. It’s almost as if there are two completely different mixes happening at the same time. I’m curious how they’re able to have the drums sound so clean while having so much noise (which takes up a lot of the frequency range) simultaneously. Possibly a video idea? Thanks for all the videos.
