Really nice addon! Do you think it would be possible to add a sun lamp or sky texture node (in the starfield background) and make it match the lighting setup? So that the shadow on objects matches the shadow of the planet. I was also wondering if you could add a visible sun (I know you could technically use the planet shader for this, but separate controls would be nice! Combining these aspects, the visible sun could automatically adapt to the lighting on the planet, so you only have to change one value in the lighting setup. idk, could be interesting to explore!
@mlt-studios

That would probably be possible. I would have to look into that. Thanks for the suggestion

Very cool, hopefully you can change the lighting method so users can pick a custom light direction instead of having just 4 light coverage steps
@almicc
@almicc Год назад
I see that this sun angle is somewhat of a limitation by the method it is displayed, although I think that with the right math you can allow full customization of the light coverage and angle without using pre-rendered angles. I'm not sure how you currently do lighting, but I would think that if you render the surface textures as HDRIs (and any other textures that rely on the lighting) then you can have a nice compromise. I don't believe it would add a significant amount of render/ process time.
@mlt-studios
@mlt-studios Год назад
@@almicc the problem is actually the clod layer. Each individual cloud casts a different shadow, depending on the light angle. When doing the shadow afterwards, it does not look nearly as realistic. The shadow for the surface etc. I simply achieve, by rendering a sphere with the light (The lightSetup sphere you can see in the thumbnail) and multiplying it on top. If you have an idea for a different solution, that would work with the clouds as well, I would love to hear that. That would massively improve the Addon
@almicc
@almicc Год назад
@@mlt-studios shot in the dark, but could you possibly achieve a good enough effect with a normal map? i know it may not look as good when viewed up close, but since the clouds are usually very close to the surface, relative to the scale of the planet, it could be passable.
@almicc
@almicc Год назад
thinking more about a normal map, it might not work at all, unless you did a lot of modification to the normal map so you end up with consistent shadows. it seems like the best solution, for choosing any light angle, would be to use quite a bit of math to translate the flat clouds onto the surface as shadows using some stretching based on the curvature. At that point you're basically just rendering the shadows manually. My idea with a normal map is probably too hacky and difficult to produce a normal map that would actually work.

Just bought your addon. It's a such a fantastic tool to use! Do you have a discord by any chance? If you want to improve it further, at the moment all light setups, surfaces, clouds etc are based on textures, which are by the way super easy to change or add our own, the color ramp could be explored more and a feature which help to mix different surfaces or clouds would be excellent.

Hiya, just bought this addon myself. I've also come across the issue where the blender menu says "this directory does not exist", when selecting the images folder. I'm using blender version 3.6.1, and I extracted the CustomPlanetImages folder as well before attempting. is there any known fix for this? Without it I cannot press the "New" button or any other planet features, only the starfield function. Running on windows btw

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. When you've installed and activated the addon, you can press N, and on the right side of you viewport should appear a menu. There you can find the tab called Custom Planet. In this tab you first have to select you image folder, and then you can press New, to create a new Planet. You can watch the video before this one. There I go over it i think

@@CoSmOOsS you first have to extract the CustomPlanetImagesFree.zip folder, so that it is a normal folder. Do you know what that means?
