Create XML Sitemaps for WordPress using the WordPress SEO by Yoast Plugin | WP Learning Lab
In this tutorial I'm going to show you how to create an XML sitemap for your website. XML sitemaps are used by search engines, like Google, to easily find all the content on your website. Have them also helps with SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
The easiest way to create XML sitemap.
Although some people may call them Google XML sitemaps, they are actually a site map of your website that you SUBMIT to Google.
To generate sitemap you something called a sitemap generator (very appropriately named).
The are plugins that are created only as sitemap creator, but there a few plugins that also do multiple things. So you can get two birds with one stone.
One of these multi-function plugins is WordPress SEO by Yoast; that is the plugin we highlight in this tutorial.
So let's get to it.
To install this plugin please log into your WordPress dashboard, hover over Plugins and then click on Add New.
On the next page type "WordPress SEO by Yoast" into the search bar. The plugin we want should be the first one in the top left.
Click on the Install Now button and then click Activate after it's installed.
You will now see an "SEO" menu option in the left sidebar. Hover over it and click on XML Sitemaps.
Upon installation, the plugin generates a sitemap immediately. You can click on the XML Sitemap button to view it.
You can then go into the User Sitemap, Post Types and Taxonomies tabs to define the settings for your new sitemap.

I used this plugged-in very helpful thoug I have a question, I had seen in others that sitemaps needs to be updated so how will this be updated? Will it be automatically updated or the process will just be redone(putting the xml sitemap in console)? Thanks for the help! PS. I think you need to add the enabling and disenabling the sitemaps in the feature :D I thought it was gone as well and had been in a premium version :D just saw from another video that its just hidden.! Other than that, the video was great!!

Thanks for the information, informative video. My only suggestion, relax on all the popup screens to promote your PDF, site, etc.. It's distracting. Perhaps some in the end of the video would be more effective, that's just my two cents. Thank you again for the video tutorial.

Hi Dora, You can install it during construction. Any pages that you add will be automatically added to it and any pages you remove through out construction should be automatically removed from the site map. Once you go live make sure you add the XML sitemap to the Google Search Console. +Strela Natalia Hi Strela, it's still there on the free version but it's hidden. Try going to Yoast Dashboard > Click on Features tab > Enable advanced settings. That or something similar should add the XML signal option. Let me know how that works and thanks for watching!

Hi Chuchi, are page speed testing apps telling you that you need to CACHE STATIC CONTNT? Most caching plugins should be able to do that, that's their main purpose.

Go to Yoast > General > Features Tab. Then find "XML sitemaps" on the list and turn it on. If you click on the interrogation mark you can also see your XML sitemap created. If you want you can check my webpage ---> marketingassistant.org/

Hello, Thank you for your video. I use final tile Gallery to create Galleries of Images. I am surprised to notice none of the images contained it the galleries are in the sitemap. Is it a bad thing ? My images are still going to be found on google images ? What should I do ? Thank you very much

Hi Frederic, You usually want your images in Image Search and it's best to do that using a sitemap. What are you using to create your sitemap?

If i permanently delete a blog post on my webpage, do I have to resubmit a new site map? I'm getting Error in google search console that says "submitted URL not found (404) so I'm not sure how to fix this.

Sitemaps update automatically when a new post is added, so I would think they update when one is deleted, but I haven't tested it. If the post of not being removed from the sitemap, you don't have resubmit it, but you do have to regenerate it in your site.

Hey, I have one question for you. Does sitemaps have something to do with how big traffic of your website is? I'm asking this because I connected sitemaps to two websites and one isn't showing it at all on Google, and the other one is only showing the first row (just 2 pages). Thanks!

Hi Jeanette, Sorry for the delay. We just had our third baby and it's been a bit of a gong show around here 👶 I'm using the free version. Since making this video Yoast has hidden the sitemap option though. Go to Yoast > General > Features Tab. Then find "XML sitemaps" on the list and turn it on. In a short amount of time a sitemap should be automatically generated and found at yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml I hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Haha, thanks for the love man! I didn't know you were watching the comments: anyways, I've done this mistake in the past, I've installed Yoast and inputted the api but didnt upload the sitemap to google.. duuuh :) I just wanted to raise awareness :p so others dont do my mistake

Hi Prathmesh, not with that version. The pro version of Yoast SEO lets you create video sitemaps.

Hey Bjorn, thanks for the video. When I click on XML Sitemap to generate my sitemap I get an error saying the page cannot be found. So, I added a page with the extension sitemap_index.xml to my site and it comes up blank. How do I fix this?

Jon W Hi Jon. The WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin should handle all of that for you. The only reason I wouldn't work is if there is a plugin conflict. I recommend that you try one of these plugins: Google XML Sitemaps: wordpress.org/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/ XML Sitemaps: wordpress.org/plugins/xml-sitemaps/ Before you try those, delete the sitemap_index.xml page you created. Let me know if those work, if they don't we'll try something else!

There's no need to limit the entries per sitemap. You can have up to 1000 posts per sitemap or maybe more. I think the limit is 1000.

Hi Mikkel, As far as I know Google won't do it. I'm sure you have set up so you can navigate to the different subjections using named anchors and # in the URL. But Google sees that all as just one URL. And it won't index the same URL multiple times.

If you go to the General Settings page for SEO Yoast and then click on the "Features" tab you should see an option to turn on sitemaps. This is in the free version as well. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Hi Bjorn, thanks for the video. I recently downloaded yoast but when I click on XML Sitemap to generate my sitemap I get an error saying the page cannot be found. www.uepgutenberg.edu.py/sitemap_index.xml could you help me with that? Does it take time for the plugin to generate a sitemap? Update: Seconds after I posted this question it worked. No idea how, as long as it works. Thanks for the video again!

The plugin has been updated since I recorded this video. Try going to the Dashboard for the SEO Yoast plugin, then click on "Features". Then find and enable the Advanced Settings. Then save. Once the page reloads you should see the XML Sitemap option on the under the SEO Yoast menu on the left side. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Hi Eric, I'm sorry for the confusion, the checklist is 100% free. When you enter your name and email address it is sent to your email address. The $7 item is presented after you optin and is a short video course expanding on the knowledge the PDF checklist provides, it is different than the checklist. It's all explained at the very top of the page for the $7 course. Again, sorry for the confusion. I'll have to see if I can make the process a little more clear.

Hi Shivani, If you've done the things I've suggested, which it sounds like you have, it's nearly impossible for me to help you further without accessing your website admin and possibly your cPanel. You may have a conflict with a plugin on your site. You can try deactivating all plugins, except for the XML sitemap plugin to see if it works after that.

Hi Christina, try this on the free version for Yoast to find the sitemap section. Log into your WordPress admin and add this to the end for the URL in the address bar: /wp-admin/admin.php?page=wpseo_xml This will only work if Yoast SEO is installed.
