As much as I love using Createx products, I found what I consider to be a pretty serious issue with the Createx 4030 Balancing Clear. This information needs to be shared with anyone who uses this product!

I learned by trial and error that more often than not that the hardening of the 4030 occurs because of exposure to heat somewhere above 30c or 86f. It doesn't happen instantly, but it will start the polymerization process. Also, temperature shocking the paint. If it is shipped during winter up here in the North, and then warms up too quickly the same thing happens. It seems that 4030 does not like rapid changes in temperature or summertime heat So i started storing my large bottles in a cool dark place, and only pouring out a "working amount" into a smaller bottle to have beside my airbrush. Since I started doing that, not once has anything polymerized. The same thing can occur with certain Wicked colors from before 2010 if you have any really old bottles. Around then they changed the formula to be 100% waterborne and it stopped happening. So, while air does play a role for sure, make sure your big bottles are stored in a gentle thermal environment with no sudden changes in heat, or any high temperatures.

Hi Kim! I completely agree with temperature shocking the paint. I don't order paint during the winter unless it is absolutely necessary. My studio is a temperature controlled environment that doesn't go above 76 degrees and none of my paint sees direct sunlight. I have a number of older than 2010 Wicked bottles as well. To date, 4030 is the only product I've ever experienced this issue with. I'm sure heat plays a role (and we obviously can't control the temperature when products are shipped during the hot summer either), but I think there's more to it than just that. I've sent an email to Createx hoping they can provide some better answers. I'll share what I learn with all of you when I hear back from them. Thanks for sharing your knowledge my friend!

I had a 16 oz bottle go solid prior to removing the factory seal. Createx replaced it promptly. It’s interesting that 4050 clear has recently been promoted as a mix additive. I wonder if issues with 4030 have affected sales? Createx ought to consider a public announcement about this product. Transparency is important in the urethane clear business, don’t you think?
@wickedartstudio
@wickedartstudio 4 года назад
I actually prefer UVLS as a carrier for candy2o over 4030. I would assume 4050 and 4030 have similarities, but to what extent I'm not sure. I agree that more transparency would be better for both sides of the isle. I can understand how a bad batch could happen during large scale production. I can also imagine how that batch could remain in circulation for a while, but I think a better explanation would be beneficial and reassuring for their customers.

This maybe a repeat. Both times my 4030 broke bad it was factory sealed. My purchases were bulk because It made sense, with a recent diagnosis of cancer bulk days are over. Staying alive matters more. Createx replaced the first two not sure that will happen again, had no idea the scale of the problem Respectfully, Bill

Agreed. I initially leaned toward this being more my fault... perhaps I didn't get the cap on tight enough or something to that effect. I was very surprised how many others quickly commented that they had experienced the same problem. Many of them experienced it as you did, having never broken the factory seal. I'm working on communicating directly with Createx through email in an effort to get some better answers about the cause and prevention of this issue. They had a bad batch a while ago and had been replacing them. It’s not from air exposure. Contact Createx directly. I started using 4050 UVLS Clear instead of 4030. Cost a lil more, but I love how it performZ comparing the two. Ask Createx for a sample of the UVLS when u ask for ur 4030 replacement.

Yeah, I've had the UVLS clears since they were released. I like the UVLS as a carrier for candy2o better, but I still prefer 4030 for other uses. Createx has very good customer service in my experience and that's a big part of the reason why I've remained loyal to their brand. I think there's more to this issue than a bad batch though. I've sent an email to them.

I just turn the bottle upside down and let the inside liquid provide the seal. You can store it upside down or just turn it upside down a few times to get the liquid to seal it.. Of course make sure the cap is screwed on tight.

If it was an air problem it would go off from top to bottom wouldn't it, the bottom would go hard last surely it must be a chemical problem. To prove the point like someone said earlier turn bottle upside down it should not go hard at bottom, what do you think?
@wickedartstudio
@wickedartstudio 4 года назад
I'm really not certain. I'm no chemist. So, I can't give a definitive answer and I may never be able to. I think the technology behind the acrylic urethane is similar to a catalyzed urethane in some respects (It's my opinion Createx has been trying to get their products to mimic the performance of automotive urethane since Auto Air Colors was launched back in 2002). When it comes to a catalyzed urethane, the catalyst is what initially kicks and causes the paint to begun to cure. After that, the moisture in the air is what actually causes the paint to cure over about 30 days. I would assume the 4030 uses moisture in the air to some extent during the curing process as well, but I could be completely wrong on that.

Yes, shocking the paint with temperature (low or high) is not good. 4030 is more susceptible to large temperature swings because it's an acrylic urethane. I don't order paint during the winter months either unless it's absolutely necessary. We can't control the temperature in the summer months either though... The UVLS clears are very similar to 4030. Trevor, I had this happen with a polyurethane additive from Mission Models Paints - their reasoning for why it happened was that the poly was exposed to a temp of 80* and refused to replace their product. Why do I mention that? Well if you hold a bottle of MMP Poly additive and 4030 next to each other, the list of ingredients are exactly the same. I have stuck to just Createx products and now keep the 4030 in a cool closet out of direct light and it seems to be working so far. I will be watching to see how your seal works. Hope it does help.

I still fairly new to airbrushing but I have ran into this problem. I had 4 of the smaller bottles 4030 that hardened up on me. First one I used a bit of it and when I came back to it, it had gone hard on me. I went to several local suppliers and they were out of it. When I finally found some I grabbed 3 of the 4 oz bottles, a week or so latter I wanted to use a candy so I opened a bottle. It seemed ok for as much as I knew about it. A few days latter that bottle was solid and the other two bottles were also solid, those two still had the factory seal on them and they were both solid. I thought maybe I had stored them wrong or something. I got some 4040 now and I haven't had a problem with that. Thank you for your Videos they have helped me so much as this old man learns new tricks.
@wickedartstudio
@wickedartstudio 3 года назад
Hey Chuck! Hopefully, Createx has resolved the issue by now and future 4030 product won't suffer from the same problem. Just FYI, using 4040 as a carrier for candy is fine, but that product was designed specifically to stop candies from bleeding, or leaching into overlying colors. If you're adding reducer to the 4040/candy mix, you're diminishing that protection. 4050 (UVLS Gloss Clear) is also a fantastic product to use as a carrier for candy2o. I prefer using 4050 over 4030 or 4040 for that purpose.
@myrtlebeachairbrush
@myrtlebeachairbrush 3 года назад
I don't know if this would help but I would assume since it is some type of clear that any time it is exposed to air it begins to harden and in the photography industry you can't have your chemicals get too much air or they'll go bad so we have collapsible bottles in the photography industry maybe it would help to get one of those small collapsible bottles and use that to hold your clear and that way you could pour it out and small amounts collapse the air out and have an airtight seal
@wickedartstudio
@wickedartstudio 3 года назад
I suspect air has something to do with it... logic would tell us that since air movement aids in the curing process after spraying. How much of a factor is it is what I don't know. UV light and humidity may also contribute. I've sent a couple emails to Createx attempting to get some more information... Crickets so far which is disappointing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us on the subject though! I'll try to remember to bring this point up in my follow-up video.

I work at a hobby shop that sells a hobby paint that has a Polyurethane additive that ,by MSDS sheet, is identical to the 4030. The paint manufacturer has told us that storage at 80 degrees and over can cause it to "cook off". We have also found that the Poly additive (4030) will freeze during shipment at very low temperatures and solidify. When ever you open a product and use it, air Will get in (what replaces the product in the bottle when you use it?) Now if the cap is not sealed tight, the solvent and binder will evaporate just like it does when you use the product. So keep the cap tight, store in a controlled temperature area, and if you can avoid it , don't have it shipped in the winter when extreme cold can be expected.

About a year later I got talked into trying it again and so far I have not had any problem with the newer bottle. The difference could be that I bought a 4oz bottle and keep it in a cheap airtight container. I’m not sure as I don’t want to loose the bottle by testing. But I will once it’s towards the end. A suggestion... I put disks of aluminum duct tape (punched out with a sharpened piece of pipe) under the cap of my paint bottles if I'm not going to be using them for a while. For short times (a week or two) I leave the protective backing paper on the tape; for long storage I remove the backing and stick the aluminum disk to the (clean) top of the bottle to make a hermetic seal. When punching out the disks, use the end-grain of a piece of softwood (like a spruce of fir 2x4) as a base to protect the edge on the pipe punch.

The 4050 Gloss Clear does everything 4030 does and more. So, I've transitioned to using 4050 rather than 4030. 4050 is stable and I've never had any issues with it.

Taping the caps down is probably a good idea, but I would think you could still run into problems with residual paint not allowing the cap to seal completely. I had an unopened 8oz bottle go paste-like therm solid on me in 2 weeks. Air-tight, stored in a black hardshell case, in an air-conditioned room. How it was stored before I purchased it, IDK. The bottle I bought it to replace, oddly enough, had 3/16" left in the bottom. Except for some dried bits at the cap, it was good to go. Crystal clear, as opposed to opaque white also. Createx answered none of my civilly asked questions, told me if I mailed it to them they would replace it. Not very satisfying, I'm not making a trip to the Post office, buying a shipping envelope, & paying postage, For a $10 bottle

Hi Trevor, just watched the video and your problem with the 4030 .coming with a photography background and having done my own film development and picture enlargement I remember that we used in the darkroom either "foldable bottles" (the type you pushed downwards to remove any air that is in the bottle) or we used a "gas" that was heavier than air and we sprayed that into the bottles where we kept the developer and stabiliser chemicals in to remove any trace of air. Being a gas thats heavier than air it removes all the air (oxygen) out of the bottle and so kept the chemicals "fresh" for a long period whereas if you where not using the gas the chemicals would start crystallising very quickly and became unusable. This is such a long time ago and in Germany so I sadly have not got the name in my head right now. This should do the trick and stop the 4030 from hardening inside the bottle. What do you think. Surely its also cheaper then having to replace the 4030. Keep up the good work as I look forward to each video you post.

about 6 months ago I had a similar issue with a small bottle of 4030. Createx did replace the bottle and at that time I got the explanation that they fine-tuned the formula and that older products could harden in the bottle but they solved it. I haven't used the "new" bottle of 4030 yet (so it is still factory sealed) and after watching your vid I went to check the "new" bottle I received a couple of months ago ... it is all dried out, even with the factory seal still on the bottle. Looking forward to your response from Createx to explain this problem and how to possibly solve or prevent it. I hope your solution for resealing it helps out. @@wickedartstudio my mistake but I have to correct my initial post: the bottle that dried out wasn't the one I received to replace my initial bottle of 4030 that hardened. It was another bottle that I apparently had laying around in my cupboard :). The bottle that I received as a replacement (and where I got the explanation of a newer formula used) is still good and is a couple of months old but still has the factory seal on it. The difference that I experienced so far is that the bottles that dried out (even with the factory seal) are those with a black label and called 4030 Intercoat Clear, the replacement bottle (with the so called fine-tuned formula) has a green label and is called 4030 Balancing Clear. That might be because of the issues they solved in Spring of 2019 as you mentioned. So far the new bottle with the green label is still in great shape but still has the factory seal on it. They wrote "we are aware of many past issues with the 4030, however the issue was fixed in Spring of 2019". I spent some time this afternoon going through old receipts and records trying to determine exactly when I purchased the 2 bottles I had in stock without success. I don't think they were that old, but I could be wrong. The reply also said 4030 "is susceptible to freezing in cold temperatures and affected by high heat". I was already aware of that though. I replied back to their reply prodding for more specific information. I'll bring up your UV question in my next reply as well.

I had this happen to a small 8 oz bottle after one use. I thought this happen because I left the cap slightly open when I stored it. I now keep my 4030 bottles in a additional ziploc bag to insure the 4030 stays airtight as much as possible. I've had the same partially used bottle (In a ziploc bag) for 6 months with no ill effects.

I believe the issue has been fixed. I've had five bottles of various sizes now for more than a year, two of which have been opened, and all of them are still good. The only thing I changed was how they are stored. They are now stored in a dark cabinet rather than on my paint rack.

I've went thru 2 bottles that did that. I was told some may have froze in transport. Was just recently advised by createx to use their UVLS clear as a replacement.

Yeah, the water-based polyurethanes don't recover after being exposed to freezing temps (4030 and UVLS fall into that category). I try to avoid ordering paint during winter for that reason.
@h8tnlife

@@wickedartstudio I've always ordered from coast airbrush which is just outside Los Angeles and I'm in the desert in Arizona. Not exactly sure how what I ordered would of froze but that was their suggested answer. The second bottle, Dave Monning from Coast airbrush gave me a bottle as a replacement here at a airbrush class in Phoenix. It too did the same thing. This time though, the bottle was never opened.

@@h8tnlife I hear you, but you might be missing one part of the equation. All the Createx paint is manufactured in Connecticut. It gets really cold up there, as well as a lot of places between California and Connecticut when the products are shipped. Just food for thought... Whether or not that is, or was the only issue causing 4030 to solidify, I don't know. I was told recently in another comment that there was a lot of discussion on the Createx FaceBook page and some on Coast's page about the issues with 4030. All of that apparently occurred before 2019. I'm not very active on social media and missed all of that. For whatever reason, I didn't experience this issue until mid 2020. I've ordered more 4030 since I lost the bottle in this video and so far the newer product is still usable. The UVLS clears are a better, more useful product in most cases in my opinion. I do still prefer using 4030 as a mix additive in some situations though. Hopefully, the issues have been resolved.

Wicked Art Airbrush Studio Not dissing the product at all, I am just starting to play and experiment with the airbrush and would most probably have bought the smallest bottle instead of the large bottle seeing that I don’t even know yet how much I’ll use it. How long will a sealed bottle last? I haven’t opened it yet and considering to get a small bottle to experiment and practice with first before opening the large bottle.

@@heinrichhelmbold419 That's a good question. Many others have commented that they've had brand new bottles with the factory seal in place solidify. So, my assumption that the factory seal is good seal may not be accurate. I got a reply from Createx today that said they were aware of 4030 issues, however the issue was fixed in Spring of 2019. I replied back and asked for more specific information. We'll see what else they say soon. ..

I recently had the same thing happen to me. I had a 2 oz bottle that had been opened, and an 8 oz bottle that had never been opened. It still had the factory seal. So I don't think that was your problem. I thought it was my problem at first until I realized the one had never been opened. I don't know the cause but I suspect in my case that it was sunlight. I keep my paint in a bookcase which is adjacent to a window and sun shines on it. So I made a cover. The good thing is, I contacted Createx Colors through the website and they told me to send them the bottles and they would happily replace them, which they did and only took a day or 2. I hope that helps.

My bottles were stored in a closed box in a room that is always cool and the paint went bad anyway. Maybe light does have an effect but it wasn't a factor in my case.

My studio is a temperature controlled environment and none of my paint is exposed to direct sunlight. Sunlight may play a role, but there's obviously more to it than just that based on my experience and all of the other comments. One of the reasons I've remained a loyal Createx user is because they do take care of their customers and they are constantly trying to improve their products. I've sent an email to them. Hopefully they can provide me with some better answers. I'll share that information with all of you when I hear back from them.
