I was more than a little disappointed to experience the 4030 solidifying issue discussed in the previous video. In this video I share what I learned from Createx, as well as some additional advice for storing 4030 Balancing Clear.

I appreciate the effort you went to so that we all can understand and minimize the issues that 4030 has presented. It’s great that Createx stands behind its products-but I expect any reputable company to do so. They don’t get cookies for behaving properly. Createx would build trust by explaining the issue in detail. They also ought to use better packaging so that users do not have to deal with any of this.

That is crazy I came upon your video because I recently bought a lot from createx items from spraygunner and this time around my 4030 came leaking and with a loose seal under the cap. Last time I made an order from spraygunner it was a bottle of opaque black same issue. I have not had the solidifying issue but damn well good to know about it. Thank for your efforts to get us an answer as to the why?

I'm sorry to hear that. I rarely experience issues when ordering from Spray Gunner. For what it's worth, I believe Createx has resolved the issue with their 4030 Balancing Clear. I've had several bottles of the product since creating these videos and I've not experienced the same issue again.

Thank you for the update. Interestingly, Createx technical support said to me in a recent response to an unrelated question, that they are now recommending 4050 as the "superior" product instead of the 4030. I was able to make a seal that stops evaporation of solvent like lacquer thinner from paints that might work in this case (and lacquer thinner evaporates from all containers). I laminated 2 layers of extra thick aluminum cooking foil to cereal box cardboard using acrylic craft glue and use that to replace the factory seal. If it stops lacquer thinner, it should work for this too.
@wickedartstudio
@wickedartstudio 3 года назад
I would think you're seal would work if it stops lacquer thinner. Let us know how it goes! I do prefer 4050 as a carrier for candy2o compared to 4030. I also like using 4050 with metallic an pearl because 4050 has a higher solids content than 4030. I've found that metallic and pearl sprays out, and lays down better using 4050. Due to the higher solids content, I still prefer 4030 as an additive for general airbrushing though. Using 4050 as a mix-additive with other Createx paint reduces spray performance through an airbrush in my experience because of the higher solids content..
@jeff547943
@jeff547943 3 года назад
I also like to use 4050 from 1.0 + but I've found the 4030 seems to flow a little better when using smaller needles and airbrushes Createx still seem to promote 4030 more to prevent tip dry. For my use, which is fine art on canvas and art boards and some metal composites they both work well and in fact I use both, 4050 from spray guns when blocking out and 4030 when airbrusing

Always good to get feedback on products from someone not affiliated to Createx. I believe Createx went through an experimental phase with their products and these are the results. The 4011, 4012 and 4013 range of reducers are another testimony of this. If Createx answer an email giving the exact technical problem of their products, they open themselves up for worldwide replacement of products and having to do a recall, instead they use the blanket approach of replacing whenever a customer highlights the issue - this saves them lots of money. At least they are not ignoring the problem and pretending it doesn’t exist. Lucky for you, you are in the US - these problems are worse for us in South Africa cause we do not have direct contact with Createx and have to work through our supplier. Getting replacements will take weeks, even months... this is a bigger hassle than products not performing as they should. This said... it’s our choice to use a local brand or Createx, and overall the quality of Createx speaks for itself and living with the once in a while issues is maybe a small price to pay compared to a product that gives inferior results.
@wickedartstudio
@wickedartstudio 3 года назад
Hey Heinrich! I hadn't thought about it from a worldwide replacement or recall perspective... That's a good point. One of the reasons I have remained a loyal user of Createx products is the fact that they are continuously improving their existing products, as well as bringing new products to market relatively often. The quality and spray characteristics of their paint lines today is significantly better in a number of ways compared to when Auto Air Colors was first introduced in 2002. There will be issues along the way. That's just part of it sometimes. I would much rather use products from a company that continuously strives to improve those products for the consumer over a company that sends their products to market as is and hopes for the best.

thanks following up on this. except for the 4030 I'm pretty happy with the Createx products and I'll keep using them. Instead of 4030 I have been using Transparant Base as a mixing media for the Kandy2O paints (a tip I got during an airbrush workshop) and it seems to do the job just fine. I am also thinking of trying out UVLS Clear instead of 4030. Nice tip on protecting them from UV light, I also overlooked that part in the tech sheets :)
@wickedartstudio
@wickedartstudio 3 года назад
Hey Sven! Yes, Transparent Base was actually the recommended carrier for the pigment based candy colors when the Auto Air line was first introduced (candy2o, 4030 and UVLS didn't exist back then obviously). For general airbrushing, Transparent Base will work as a carrier for candy2o without issue. When spraying larger areas with a full size gun or a mini gun, I don't recommend using Transparent Base. Transparent Base doesn't lay down as nice and some experience is required in order to avoid mottling and/or striping. UVLS and 4030 are much more forgiving when it comes to spraying candies and achieving even results even for a novice in my opinion. UVLS and 4030 also lay down flatter/smoother after being sprayed compared to Transparent Base. UVLS has a higher solids content compared to 4030. Adding UVLS to metallic or pearl colors also helps achieve a better finish due to the higher solids content.

Thank you so much for these two videos. Just last week I received an order with an 8oz bottle of the 4030 and yeah, SAME ISSUE !!! Same flip cap too........frustrated to say the least and, no, it still is sealed. Weather has been temperate, no freezes or heat and yeah, my studio is temperature controlled and no sunlight......
@wickedartstudio
@wickedartstudio 2 года назад
One thing to keep in mind is you have no control over the climate a product has been exposed to prior to receiving it. You also have no control over how long, or how that product was stored before purchasing it. Although you have a climate-controlled studio, the product could've been subjected to freezing temperatures in transit from the manufacturer to a retailer. For that reason, I try to avoid ordering product during the winter season. For what it's worth, I believe Createx has resolved the issue with 4030. I've ordered several bottles since producing these videos. Some have been used completely with no issues. Others have been partially used with no issues and two that are still factory sealed haven't solidified to date. It's possible there are still some bottles with the older formulation in circulation out there. I would assume you unfortunately wound up with one of those. Contact Createx and they will more than likely replace the product. Their customer service has been very good in that respect based on my own experience. Personally, I rarely use 4030 anymore and likely won't order the product again after my current stock is gone. The UVLS line of clears is a superior product that does everything 4030 does and more. I've yet to experience any issues with any of the UVLS clears and highly recommend using them as opposed to the 4030.
@celticmandoplayer
@celticmandoplayer 2 года назад
@@wickedartstudio My vendor contacted Createx and they are NOT standing behind the 4030, instead telling my vendor that it was my fault for ordering when it would freeze here........HOWEVER, that entire week that it was in shipment from CA to WA, my temps were above normal and highs in the 70s. Very disappointed in Createx. I've used their paints since the very beginning in the early 80s, I believe.....I used the predecessor before Createx was around and that was Versatex paint. I'm pissed off for sure and definitely disappointed with Createx not standing behind their products now. I will add too, that hmmm, are they shipping their products to vendors in temperature controlled semi trailers? I have a feeling that's not the case.

I've been using Createx for over a decade and the original Createx paints are still as good as the day I bought them. The only problem I ever had with shelf life was with 4030 which Createx via the distributor here in Australia replaced. I had been using a 4030 bottle that was probably 3 years old, when I opened the 2 year old 960ml bottle of 4030 the factory seal fell off (usually they are sealed tight) and the 4030 had gone rock hard. I can only assume there was a chemical reaction with the factory seal and it allowed air but not sure what happened. I now store 4030 in a box, I've put a silicone garden hose seal on them, maybe I'll paint the bottle with autosealer next time I have that out to stop UV. At the moment I put 4030 in a dispensing bottle with a twist top seal to use when airbrushing as I only use small amounts and it works well, didn't seize up.

Hey Jeff! I was surprised by the number of comments left on these videos from others that have experienced the 4030 issue. So far I've only lost the one bottle. Others have been less fortunate. I do have three or four newer bottles that I've had for a while now and they are all still good. So hopefully whatever the issue is/was has been fixed. I'd like to see better caps on the bottles as well, but I doubt that will happen. 4030 is the only product I've ever had a storage issue with too. I still have 4 ounce bottles of Auto Air Colors from when they were first launched. I've had to throw out a couple over the years that gummed up (likely because I didn't have the lid tight enough), but the vast majority of them are still useable today. I appreciate the kind words my friend!

@wickedartstudio
@wickedartstudio 3 года назад
Hi Anthony! You would likely get better results adding a little 4011 reducer to your clear. The reducer will help the clear spray better through an airbrush and it will also help cure the paint a little faster. Work in light layers and use air to help dry each layer. Hammering a lot of product on the surface considerably slows the curing process, if it cures at all. Applying too much product traps water and other solvents under the surface and won't allow them to escape through evaporation. The environmental conditions you're spraying in will also play a role in how quickly or slowly the paint cures. 5604 is a top coat under the Createx Airbrush Colors line. That particular line was designed more for fabrics and generally requires heat setting with a heat press for ultimate durability. You might try the newer UVLS clears (available in a gloss, matte and satin finish) when you run out of 5604. UVLS is a better product for your intended purpose in my opinion. The information above also applies to UVLS.

Hey Dale! That's more effort than I'm willing to put in, lol, but it if it works for you that's a good thing. As far as finding out how old the paint is in the store, you can also look at the batch code which is found above the bar code in a fine print alpha-numeric sequence. The batch code will look and read something very similar to 1AU-Z20.07.18. I'm not 100 percent certain, but I believe the fifth and sixth characters, "20" in this case, refers to the year of manufacture. So the bottle I took that particular batch code from was manufactured in 2020. I suspect the following two characters, "07" in this case, refers to the month. So, that particular bottle was more than likely made in July of 2020.

One of the downsides to using dye based candies is the fact the dye in the candy can leach, or bleed into subsequent layers of paint. That is exactly what you experienced. This happens with all dye based candies, whether you're using water-based or solvent based. Some candy colors are more prone to bleeding than others (blues and reds tend to bleed more in my experience). There are a couple things you can do to try and prevent and/or mitigate bleeding. The first tip is to dilute the candy more when you mix it. I typically like to mix my candy2o at a 1:1 ratio (one part candy2o, one part UVLS and a little bit of reducer). Mixing your candy stronger gets you faster coverage, but it also makes the candy more prone to bleeding because there's more dye in the mix. Make sense? If you're going to be spraying artwork over the candy, I would recommend diluting it more with UVLS (3:1 or 4:1 - three or four parts UVLS, one part candy and a little reducer). The other thing you can do is what @STEVEN BUTKUS mentioned, use 4040 Bleed Checker over candy2o prior to spraying your artwork. You want one or two light coats and spray it straight out of the bottle. The idea comes down to using dissimilar materials. 4040 Bleed Checker has a different chemical makeup compared to UVLS, candy2o and whichever reducer you prefer to use. That dissimilar layer creates a barrier that is much harder for the dye in the candy to penetrate. If you add reducer to the 4040 Bleed Checker, you are adding a similar material back into the mix which will allow the dye to bleed into it. I would also recommend allowing the Bleed Checker to dry for at least an hour or more before spraying any artwork over it.

I just finished it this week and found one 4030 like cottage cheese and the other perfect. Overall this isn’t a big deal for me. However, I I am looking at switching to solvent based BASF or HOK because with what I do I need really opaque thin layers... 4 coats to cover plus white sealer when going over a darker color creates a Grand Canyon like paint buildup edge and that is amateur... not to mention the amount of clear and sanding it takes to fill and smooth those canyons.

@@ReactorFour I agree. Issues are bound to come up from time to time in large scale operations, especially when a business (like Createx) constantly changes formulations in existing products and introduces new products in order to improve their entire line. I also agree with what you said about solvent-based systems. I used HOK and PPG for a lot of years before I switched to Createx. @@wickedartstudio yea, I’m relatively new to painting and have never used solvent based other than Clear..... I love everything about waterborne paint but I just did a 12 color helmet and it’s incredible, but the paint buildup is so much in parts that I need to consider, at least for some jobs, solvent based. The issue for sure is when I do a darker color like green and then need to do a fluorescent yellow over it.... I have to use yellow sealer or white sealer and then 4 coats and by then it’s too much buildup. If it’s say Purple over green or yellow, it’s not really a prob. The other issue is that those big edges will show any intermediate colors... say a green covered with white sealer then Fluero yellow, there will be a white layer that can show through the edges when you pull the fine line tape or vinyl mask. I made the mistake once of doing sparkly white, tape off lines, black, tape off lines, and then finished out the sections. All the white lines had black in the edges that showed when I pulled the fine line tape. Next time... black lines first!! Anyway, thanks for the advice.... and support in the community.

@@ReactorFour I know what you mean. Most of the time I wind up painting things in the complete opposite order with water-based compared to how I would approach the same job with solvent-based. Working backwards makes a huge difference when it comes to getting rid of build up along taped/masked edges, but it usually requires more time spent taping and masking too.

I was expecting as much, I just don't get why a company who built its name on Waterbased products doesn't make sure the alternatives they sell hit the mark of competitors lines . Its plain to see its a problem but its just cheaper to replace crap bottles and not addressing the actual problem, got to love the profit margin, but for me as I'm sure with many others perfectionist or not I wouldn't sell a product that doesn't do what it says on the tin, or at least hit the same mark as oil based products, why create a line of paints that are Waterbased and the fact of that, they want you to move to a new product but it doesn't actually do what they are trying to get your custom for, again Capitalism is a wonderful thing haha. Don't get me wrong Createx are amazing paints for me but its so frustrating buying a product , to go down the ecological route for it to not do the job they want you to change for, j can't use eurathane period , I AB in my house which is why when researching Paints, Airbrushes 7 or so years ago Created is perfect for me as for millions of other ABers, its just annoying you can't buy this for the long term, I do like to have an extra bottle or 2 of all additives just in case of sods law creeping haha its just one less thing to worry about when working on something , you know its there you don't have to order it special, but I suppose its a small price to pay to keep mine and my families health, won't stop me or you using it , it would just be nice if you knew you could just pop open a bottle and its going to be ready to go, not crossing your bell ringers and hoping it ain't gone off yet lol 😉 thanks for the update pal and again , if we try more and pay extra attention to the storage/usage instructions it may help a tad as well, its just one thing to keep in mind when knowing you need to reach for it haha

I agree and I think Createx wants the same thing we. They continue to improve their existing products, as well as introduce new products relatively often. That's one of the main reasons I have remained a loyal user of their stuff. The difference in how their paint sprayed back in 2002 when the Auto Air line was introduced compared to the spray characteristics and performance of their products today is significantly better in more than one way! There will be issues along the way. That's just part of it. I hope the 4030 issue has been resolved. Time will tell. I'd appreciate a little more transparency without divulging any trade secrets when it comes to sharing information when those issues do arise though.

You don't get any answers because they don't have one.

Either way, it would still be advantageous to be open about it in my opinion.
