Creating a DIY Humidity Dome to Bring Your Plant Back to Life

Most popular indoor houseplants require a good level of humidity - especially sensitive plants like Calatheas and Marantas, to name a few. Because many indoor plants are used to more tropical climates, it's a good idea to invest in a humidifier (either hot or cool mist) for the areas in your home where you have a lot of plants.
If you DON'T stay on top of your humidity levels, your plants can get crunchy and brown tips or crisp brown edges, or... in some cases, completely shrivel up. In this video, we'll show you how our Maranta Prayer Plant has fallen on hard times, and how we create a humidity dome or mini ecosystem to help the dying plant bounce back this spring.
Here is a link to the IKEA dome that I used for my Begonia Maculata: www.ikea.com/u...
And for more on the products we used in this video, check out our Amazon storefront here: www.amazon.com...

Do you have to keep it in the done at all times? Or only to Jumpstart it?

@@erindobbins4496 ive been keeping it on since i wrote this comment and its been doing just fine ! winter has been harsh on my plants and my calathea is the only one putting on another leaf :) the only problems ive had with humidity domes was that, when part of my nerve plant died, mold grew on it but it wasnt much of a problem. of course, im only sharing my experience and perhaps this didnt work as well for others, yet i feel quite safe to say you can keep it on for quite a while and have your plants do good!

@@nicosappletart Good to know! I am hoping to not have to do one because I want to see my beauties not cover them up :) So far they are okay. I'm hoping my local climate is friendly enough they can thrive without it. Thanks!

so confused. How is it getting the oxygen it needs? Do you water it on a regular schedule when it's under a dome?

Ahh, super helpful, I never thought to use a plastic baggie like this haha! Thankfully, (knock wood...) I don't have any plants on the brink of death at the moment, but I will definitely try this out when all hell breaks loose.

Would it be okay to use regular plastic bags? Like transparent bags from paper plate packs?

Totally - anything that holds in moisture would work

Got a very cute looking Fittonia only to realise it is the hardest plant to take care of. Whatever i do she seems to be sad to be with us and looks sad too. I have been misting her for twice a day tried moving her around the house to see what light she really wants but nothing has brought up her spirits. Finally saw this video of urs today so she is now in a humidity-ziplock pouch dome. I have a question - is it okay to put the plant in this setting out in the east facing balcony? If i put it in a corner it wont get direct sun but ambient light all day. Also, how often should i be watering or misting the plant in this dome setting?

Does it work on dormant alocasias or alocaisas that keep dropping leaves? Mine keeps giving growth but as it gives it also drops. Will this help ir?
@TheJungleUpstairs
@TheJungleUpstairs 3 года назад
That’s actually pretty common for your Alocasia to lose a leaf every time it gains a leaf- sometimes it’s just unavoidable 🥺

If saving a plant from moisture loss overnight does the humidity dome need to be transparent

I have a mother-in-law's tongue plant that has done really well over the years and is now so tall that it is out of control - it is basically bending over and outgrowing its pot but I don't want to put it in a bigger pot, I want to keep it the size it is and make it smaller - I trimmed it down a bit but I'm not sure if I should have done that. Any suggestions on how to keep your cactus plants small sized and not take over their planter?

The dollar store had plastic domes that I think were meant for outdoor gardens but I am now going to try it on my Begonia Maculata that just dropped it's last leaf. TY so much for the info!

Update: it is now 3 weeks later and it's working! So thrilled. I think the Beonia Maculata's I have tried to keep alive died from lack of adequate humidity. I also have central a.c. and I think that was contributing to their demise

I've just gotten my 2nd curly fireflush begonia in the mail and it's dying (again)... I've been racking my brain for something free to use as a dome. Started out with a plastic bag held up by chopsticks. Not bad but... I had a brainstorm! A clear gallon jug from water! Cut the spout end just big enough to fit inside your pot's edge. The hard plastic will protect the plant. Easy to cut vents into that can be opened or closed. Clear to let light in. Hope it helps someone... Edit... be careful about letting some plants leaves touch the wet sides. Some will rot.
