It'd be cool to see more maps that are inaccurate, like those drawn by ancient cartographers where the farther you get from their home region it becomes more distorted--sort of like how you mentioned with the Thief example. SWAT 4 (a great game, clunky controls by modern standards but it still holds up) does a very similar thing where sometimes the crime scene layouts have been drawn on napkins or loose pieces of paper. They're usually incomplete or inaccurate too. Also, what's the music that starts playing around 5:25? It sounds like great music to write to.
Oh the one that start like 2 seconds after the timemark? It's a soundtrack from a very VERY obscure adventure rpg called The Spirit Engine 2 It has amazing soundtrack, very "feels heavy" if you know what i mean. This specific soundtrack is called "A Man's Lost Heart"
I don't write or create anything but I've fantasized (or daydreamed?) my whole life and I've come to rely heavily on maps to set the scene for my fantasies, and the best ones I've seen are made by Daniel-Andre Sorensen on artstation. His maps have basically set the foundations of all my daydreams and fantasies for the past decade.
You said very few fantasy novels do geopolitics well. can you point some that does? I am aware only of Game of thrones and Pratical Guide of Evil (and the last is mostly pretend geopoliticals, I drew the the fancy version of the fantasy map for that setting and the amount of random things there was abnormal)
The thing is, when i was thinking about the script i couldn't even find a good geo-political fantasy story. GoT is as close as it gets, i know some Sci-fi that makes geopolitics (space-politics?) really well like The Expanse, but very few fantasy actually bother to do it at all and even fewer do it well. Of course i haven't read all fantasy books ever created so there might be some shining gems that i am unaware of.
So for a story purpuse in my phantasy book is it more important to make a map on a route jorney my caracter takes or make the journey visible on the world map?
All 3 cathegories are valid, altho the 3rd one depends on if the map physically exist in your story. Really depends on what you want to do. If you're writing a book you might want to show progress every couple of chapters or so. Or you can leave it to the imagination of your audience :)
