I had John as a professor as an undergraduate student back in 2013 (ish) in a course called Higher Cognitive Processes. This course was about wisdom. I'm now a PhD student who studies visual cognition and action. I have John's paper on relevance realization pinned right beside my office desk.

One of my favorite RU-vidrs used to say: "If you're not growing, you're dying." I've been living by that ever since.

Yes! Please have John on again, Chris! He is a guest we all truly need, but someone most of us did not know of or see the value in. Love the work Mate! Keep it up!

I’m an idiot who knows nothing about how to conduct interviews, but for me this was a masterclass Chris. I’m not even 35 minutes in, and there’s been multiple occasions where John is tapering off his talking, and I would guess is probably thinking this is where you take over the conversation, but you sit there, and don’t take control of the conversation, and allow John to think if he has more to say, and then he picks up the conversation again and carries on. Truly brilliant, you’re making this all about him and his ideas and not about you. Fucking remarkable!! 🤌

Iain goes further, not only saying that both types of thought are necessary and must be practised, but also explaining the relationship that the two processes should have to one another. Dude's hand gestures are so crazy lol. He's just being a great communicator though. He has a strong grasp of language, so his ideas are very precisely explained.

John: “how do I say this without sounding conspiratorial”. Culture at the macro is a social manifestation of biology, it is a sort of”law” of nature like gravity. At the level of specifics like social media algorithms, like monetary system, like theater democracy, like profit is the supreme principle, these micro plans of culture are indeed the product of some people getting together and acting on their self interest or some preverse “common good”. Small groups of powerful people getting together and making plans (most of them out in the open) is by defition conspiracy. John needs to stay in the fold to drive his influence, I respect that.

I think these talks are great! But do we really need to understand things so intensely? Is this depth of understanding helping us in the long run? or is it just making goals seem unreachable like a dangling carrot that we can never reach. I am of the mindset we are taking ourselves to seriously, sometimes what makes sense is the absurdity.

His opening statement "There is no final solution" is all the information one needs to recognize that John in fact is NOT wise or know truth If there is no conclusion, no final answer to the seeking and all of this blah blah blah, then what is the purpose of it all? The purpose of a discourse that has no conclusion, is the functioning of "I think therefore I am". John knows he exists while he is thinking. The reason why his ego will not allow for conclusion is because John doesn't know what he is while he is not thinking. I guarantee you that John cannot stop thinking for more than a few seconds at a time Systems of thought are mechanisms through which thought is produced. There is no other purpose. Until one has realized true Self the ego will experience thought free Awareness as non-existence. This is exactly why you, John, and pretty much all of humanity is helplessly addicted to thought and all that thought has created Everything projected onto the 2D realm (screens and pages) is created by thought. Humans helpless addiction to the screen serves to wind up the mind even faster to crank out more thought The expansion of a system of thought is an expression of it's INCORRECTNESS. How is it that people think that the more complex and convoluted a system of thought is, the closer it is to truth? An objective perspective reveals the opposite I SEE all of this clearly. Indeed my very life is testament to what I am relating I have sent John a theory that explains ALL, but so far, no response. When it comes down to it, John is the opposite of wise. He is deeply deluded. Over 100 hours of blah blah blah about Truth and Reality and he think this is getting him CLOSER TO TRUTH!?! JOHN, I CHALLENGE YOU TO A DEBATE. You are leading people down the path of delusion, not truth. I gotta call you out. If you do not respond, you are a COWARD

Where are these new people? I keep meeting people I don't connect with and only like minded ones are scattered online. I want and prefer in person ones and just haven't found meaningful ones. Started social groups and those didn't work due to people starting drama. 🎭 so hard out there

We are not evolving for perfection, we are evolving for the average to be ever so slightly improved. This is why we must all share everything above and below average with each other…the process of a successful immune system staying current. We are hard wired to cull out and minimize the numbers of outliers, to minimize their impact genetically on the whole of our species.

Great interview with a superbly intelligent professor/philosopher. I discovered VERVAEKE through an article in one of Europe’s top papers De Tijd published in Flanders, Belgium. I’m kind of proud that Vervaeke has Flemish roots, and made it such prominent status among contemporary philosophers. I’m a more conscious and better person after listening to this podcast and plan to listen to all of Vervaeke’s lectures on the history of philosophy… Many thanks for the brilliant insights.

It is so valuable to me to be able to say "oh, that's how this all works. I see what's going on here, the constitutive restrictions on my ability to integrate with my reality, and I can now work better with them, and improve on their restrictive qualities."

"No political solution". Absolutely. Only cultural, structural, and technological solutions.

John's lecture on Hegel was really insightful. You can clearly see a solution to meaning crisis in the hyper-nationalism of Rus and Chyna, and the ultra-internationalism of "globalism" or "corporatism" or "wokism" I had not previously connected the dots that the rise of Nazism, was a solution to a type of meaning crisis, a total solution, except missing a vital ingredient, namely humanity. Hegel's solution was academic and political, hence turned states or super-states into hyper-cults. None of the above solutions is appealing, they are all arbitrary political power structures.

Completely agree with the other forms of knowing when engaging in martial arts or movement practices. Was involved deeply in TaeKwon-Do for about 18 years; teaching, practicing, fighting, and found myself with the hunger of returning to this. There is something profoundly rewarding about engaging in the procedural, perspectival, participatory, and ultimately the elusive flow state. I can definitely attribute much success in other aspects of my life from being able to exapt these ways of knowing to varying pursuits. However, training by myself for the last few years has seemed unable to provide aspects of these other knowings, compared to participating in a cohesive group. Thank you for hosting and participating in such a great interview, love both of your channels!

This argument of the attainment of or moving toward the ideal of perfection is the perennial argument with my husband.

I agree with you about the limitations on thinking Chris, I'm 62 and have only in the last few years begun to appreciate what you referred to as the sacred or, in my case, the role of religious experience and belief in psychology and meaning. I think it was always there, affecting my behaviour and thoughts, but I was ignoring or even denying it, with negative consequences in the form of crushing nihilism for example.

Before hearing this I was thinking in the shower this morning how we often come into an existential oasis of sorts. Sometimes the oasis is a respite, and relief, and sense of completion. But it never lasts. Because we also eventually realize in this same oasis we are stuck…and on and on this cycle repeats, churns, and trudges, uplifting, expanding, always constant

Just watched the clip. The point about friends being left behind as you grow is deeply troubling and effectively explains the deep malaise of modern culture. It is very easy to find buddies. Join an internet discussion group. Easy, done. You will get some basic interaction with some of them. But let’s get real - really good friends are extremely hard to develop, and realistically, people must GROW TOGETHER as they walk through life. The acceptance that we terminate our relationships as we change is a major problem because the same mechanism in divorce is unbelievably costly. People need to commit to each other because the group of people who you have substantial rapport with it extremely hard to find, and you will need these people to help you up when life goes bad. Deaths and cancer and bankruptcy happens. You can’t go finding relationships during that time. You need to lean on the ones you already have. The betrayal felt when your friends are not there when you really need them is so bad that you really can’t allow this to be part of the narrative of our culture. Wives are not fuck buddies you hang out with until you find another better one, and friends aren’t people you hang with until you leave the job.
