while building chaos is inevitably happening inside, it's a relief to seek a few moments of serenity outside in some natural beauty. philistines never think of that aspect !!
@thomasherrin6798
@thomasherrin6798 6 месяцев назад
Philistines think it doesn't matter if the outside gets wet but it does matter inside, the priority should be the wall repair, U beam and roof, roof, roof or there will be very little progress over winter and it will be tough going. The project will take 10 years so there is ample time to sort out the garden, it's good that Nick and son are carrying out that bulk of the work but Dan is required in the Chateau, he's just making it harder for himself, it won't affect me I stop "working" (That is a very loose term for me these days) outside in October in the UK and the weather is pretty much the same in France!?!
@lukehartman9386

@@thomasherrin6798big picture. The point of working on the garden now is so that it matches the finishing point of the building. One project, not two. Might be more work upfront, but less work later on. Also, Cameron is not Nick’s son, that was just a joke.
@nemiarucker
@nemiarucker 5 месяцев назад
@thomasherrin6798 I believe that the priority needs to be wherever Dan decides it should be. Still, I do understand what you're saying. Can you imagine, though, how focused he has to be, day after day? Working outside is probably like getting away for a few days without actually getting away. It's all good. 😊

I would add that although I admire his efforts, I am sure he sufgers from ADHD. Its obvious with his inability to finish projects he starts before starting another plus his lacking of planning necessities of a restoration and separating them from non necessities. Look, its been 3 months of good weather and he has yet to complete the temporary flooring on all floors or even start getting a roof on which will have to be done in order to do ANYTHING in the winter. Typical ADHD behavior.

@helenahandebasquet 6 месяцев назад
@@jeffproctor1690you'll find if you watch most of these 'one man, long term' projects they jump around and seem to do 'uneccesary' things. Sometimes they are waiting permissions, or materials, or money. They've already explained the garden is because it takes so long to establish they want to make a start on it now. Dan's a hard worker but i dont think he has ADHD, he just varies his tasks to give himself a break from the repetitious ones.
@jeffproctor1690
@jeffproctor1690 6 месяцев назад
@@questioner1596 yes I am. I have benn a home builder, remodeler, and project manager for over 30 years. Now I almost exclusively do project estimations, schedules, and evaluations. My common denominator on ANY job is to first have permanent power and water at the site. Both are needed by every subcontractor to work. A temp power pole is another thing that should have been done first thing after Spring thaw. Then the well. Hoth of these would have largely been done by subcontractors, so the actual work on the chateau could be done simultainously.

@hazmania

@@Lemma01I think it will depend on how it “feels” when finished. A lot f that feeling is down to the air of loss, decay & abandonment that imbues the whole building. Dans done such a huge amount of work & the longer he’s there, the more of that feeling disappears. Eventually it’ll just be an empty building, perfectly restored & just waiting for furnishing with Dans personality &, obviously, actual furniture, carpets & curtains, I think at that point it will be STUNNING!

What a great of week of progress for the old chateau - a finished upper floor, another well reinforced wall, ground laid for a hedge row/water catchment system, restored archways all the way around, several dangerous trees down, and another ton of heavy rubble pulled down and hauled out. All of that by a trio of men with boldly colored beards and lots of love for the work they are doing. And all of it topped off by a beautiful Saturday morning garden planning session and, best yet, surprise cameo appearances by none other than a smiling Jack P and his brother Thomas. Love all you guys 💚❤💙💜💕 de Chaumont!

Suggestion: Keep deciduous trees and plants away from the water features, and it will make your life much easier. Cleaning leaves from water features can be a nightmare. You would be amazed how quickly they can fill up the features and also mess up the water balance, creating too much algae and other issues.

I agree, we built a small back yard pond with a waterfall and river. We had two trees up by the waterfall. The leaves fell into the river which ultimately were either clogging up the river or were carried down into the pond. We were constantly having to clear out the mess they made.

There are multiple videos of the pond project. Aaron is very good at planning future infrastructure. He had conduit installed for future lighting. It’s not in the budget yet but it’s there. They added a fire pit to the pond area, powered by a gas bottle ( covered with a faux rock). They even included a hollow tree stump into the design. Keep your felled tree and check if a section is usable as a planter. You may have to seal it to prevent further rotting. Laura and Aaron practice mostly organic gardening. In summer they released predatory mites, via DRONE, to deal with insect infestation in the their dahlia patch. It was super cool. Once you have water on the property, you need a Hoselink, retractable hose. They are awesome. I just installed mine a month ago. Add a frost free faucet to it and you have water access in Winter. Garden Answer has videos about Hoselink and frost free faucets, too.

Love the multi colored beards. 😂 Nice to get a little peak of the boys playing. The streams and pond features sound like a great idea, can hardly wait to see it take shape. Okay then we will see ya tomorrow. 👋🏻👋🏻

Good you have a vision and are starting the plantings early as some take years to mature. I've been in my house 35 years and am only now finishing the final hardscape and plantings this coming Spring. Granted I have changed things a few times, plants went in, came out and were replaced with something else. Hardscape was put in in stages over 20 years simply because of finances. But I have finally settled on what I want in the last planter bed in the front yard and they will go in this Spring. Just waiting on two more deliveries and if I have room for a small citrus tree. Two more raised beds to build, then stepping stones for the paths in between and the positioning of a bird bath. I do still have repairs for what was already built and now needs replacing but at least the decisions are made and done. The moral of this story? Make a decision and then act on it, don't wait. But be ready to change your mind in the future. It's a lot easier to change a garden than it is to change construction once it is finished.

One thing I regretted putting ponds around my property , was not putting an island in for birds to nest

That’s sounds like a beautiful front garden. I think the wildlife is going to find your pond a wonderful resting spot.

Kids and water ... I'm not sure I would until they were older. Great to see the last external arch in place. Cannot believe your progress in such a short time and I've watched it all happen, truly astounding. Loving the vlogs!

the river is a nice idea; maybe a traditional Japanese footbridge over the river? that sort of thing was very popular in Europe and the US in the late 19th century

It's marked out in purple or magenta at the end of the video via a drone shoot, it's a collection of ponds with a connecting "stream" it's not a river, although they do refer to it as that, the water will be pumped around, it's a big garden water feature!?!

Just an FYI. I have a massive pond in my garden and it has large old trees near by that drop a tone of leaves in the fall. What people never really talk about with water features is the maintenance with regards to leaves... Leaves will cause algae and dark water if not cleaned out quickly. I am just saying you should definitely think about maintenance and seasons. But the place is looking great.

It’s not my place nor my money, but it seems to me there’s a lot being done on the grounds, that to me, is just extra… not essential at this stage. Wouldn’t it be more beneficial to be prioritizing money and time to getting a roof on the place in order to dry-in the building so that you can reduce further decay, keep dry what you’ve done, and allow you to spend more time on the interior during the cold and rainy season? Maybe we have different priorities😊

Agree, exciting landscaping project, I could imagine it as the two of you were talking about it! Developments in the house and the landscape; a treat to watch this happening. It will continue to be a brilliant restoration of the chateau and the environment around it. Well done guys

In France we are requested to avoid stagnant water in our gardens and outside spaces because it attracts mosquitoes. And especially the Asian Tiger Mosquito, an invasive species that has totally invaded France. Tiger mosquitos can transmit viruses such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika to humans.

If it's designed properly with constantly moving water, it won't get mosquitoes

Definitely don’t plant trees near the river/pond that will drop their leaves in the water. It will cause too much work to keep it clean. Love the idea of different colors blooming all year. The boys and puppies are living their best lives 😍😘
