Huw is so right, you have to have a vision. I've recently taken on an Allotment, and at the moment, I am getting it set up with raised beds etc., which it's taking quite a bit of time, because I'm a five foot two 49 year old woman, doing it on my own, with no access to a car, and so I'm transporting everything by hand, using just a gardening cart, and my own two legs lol. I'm also slowed down by the fact that I have very little money, so I am needing to scavenge free stuff, like pallet wood etc =9, and I'm not able to get some things, like Topsoil, to easily fill my beds, because its just too heavy for me to transport by hand. So necessity had bred ingenuity, and I have found, that if I dig down each of my raised beds as far as I can, and then fill in the bottom of my 'future' raised bed, with the plant matter, that I have taken off of the top of it, and then back-fill the soil, that I have dug out, back in on top of the layer of plant matter, then it is enough to raise the beds up by a good 6 inches, which is all that I need, for e decent raised bed, and means, that I can have a raised bed, without the need for extra topsoil. =DDD But a lot of my fellow Allotment growers keep saying things like 'It would be so much quicker and easier, if you didn't have raised beds.' But I say to them, 'Yes. it would. But I have a vision, of how I want my Allotment to look by the Spring, and I would feel as if I had cheated myself, if I didn't put in the extra effort, to get it as close to that vision, as possible, and I don't mind the extra effort, because the sense of achievement at the end, when it is looking how I see it, in my mind, will be worth it.' But a lot of them just don't 'get it' lol. Yes, it's not 'easy', but its worth it =DDD...I would also like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to gardeners like Huw Richards, who have helped me NO END, with their know-how, and experience, to avoid a lot of the pit-falls, that relatively new gardeners, like myself, often fall into, through inexperience, because you guys have helped me soooo much !!! =DDD

I love your whole comment and attitude on this. Taking your time with anything is much better than rushing. I think other people forget to enjoy the journey because they are trying to get a certain result/harvest; but people like you, dear lady, and myself are holding a special vision in our heart and taking time on the journey, knowing that the whole experience has its beauty and merits. You will see more amazing things and have a greater love for each precious inch of your garden because of all your hard work and time it took. You will have invested so much more into the process of creating your space that you will know it in a far more intimate way, you will feel more connected to each plant and each creature that comes to visit. As long as it may take, as hard as some of the work may be, you keep going the way you are because it is your little dream to bring to fruition and you WILL get there. I am a single mum and my youngest has ASD, ADHD and sensory processing disorder; I have very limited funds that are about to become more limited next year. I have been building my garden for the last 2 years, come December, and it has been a slow process! I just got a garden cart so I can collect different free materials from around my neighbourhood, like papers from the news agents, logs from neighbour who've taken down trees (to line the edges of my garden beds to make them look a bit prettier), rocks for the frog pond (made from black plastic and an old tyre), organic matter like grass and leaves. I have old plants that have gone to seed and am collecting the seeds for the next time they will be in season, I am doing a multitude of experimentations with different ways of weeds control and mulching and raising seeds. I put trees in this year in the hopes of producing apples and mulberries and passionfruit in the years to come. It is a slow but ever changing process of learning; sometimes things fail and sometimes they succeed, but I keep learing and the garden keeps growing, and that's the important thing. Keep at it in whatever way you can; doing something is better than doing nothing becuse it's harder for you than other people, that would be true failure.

Well done to you. Keep your vision. A tip i got was to dig down the paths lower around the beds to help fill your beds, i did that and was thrilled with that advice. Huw is a great inspiration for us as is so many more of the gardening youtubers.Best of luck with your journey im similar to you , doing it on my own, i get some comments about doing it on my own , but we arent doing it on own, we have great advisors on here and other allotmenteers too are a great help too.

I'm 3 years late commenting, but just giving props to the First Year segment. At 58 and a lifetime city dweller, I've taken up gardening for the first time, after buying an home up north that's got a generous back & side yard. My eyes are bigger than my belly sometimes--I made a mad dash to buy seeds without realizing I wouldn't be able to plant them for 5 months :) I've since learned to pace myself and relish the small victories and gradual achievement of muscle memory. I really thought I'd quit after attempting weeding and using a large clipper for the first time. Now, just a few weeks later, I've grown more methodical and efficient, and have the energy and stamina to take on the tougher tasks. It's extremely gratifying and I do get lost in the whole thing of it! It's helped me slow down and stay in the moment, both in the garden and life. Your channel really has proven invaluable. It's not just highly informative, but a big inspiration and morale booster, too!

Hi there from NZ Huw. You are one of the most inspirational young gardeners I have seen. I will be 60yrs old this year and am learning more and faster from watching gardening videos like yours. I realise now over the last 6 months I have been dreaming, drawing, researching and planning what to do with 12 acres I have been given charge of. I have gathered a lot of equipment, seeds, plants, studied the land and weather. I failed with a land bridge, my new trailer was stolen and this month saw a record rainfall which flooded me out of driving on the land. These set-backs have made me even more determined to forge ahead and stick to the dream that has been brewing and formulating in my head. Thank you so much for your encouragement!!!

I love this video. Not focusing on the failures is the key but learning from them. And your right we always get another chance next year. I didn't do well with kale this year but have some brussel sprouts which I've never grown before. I think just being out in the allotments is the best thing so enjoy it!

I actually grow fennel for the seeds. They are great dried, you can chew them for any kind of indigestion/heartburn/tummy troubles. Make fennel tea, and grind up to add to curry powder.

Try putting them on potatoes that are cut in parts, bit of oil, pepper and salt and 45min in oven at 180 degrees C, that's my favourite :)

Last season I failed totally with okra, asparagus beans, aubergines and Pak Choi. However, we still have lots of veg and I won five prizes in the show. So don’t worry about failures.

Yes, I couldn't do spinach this year. Tried 3 times at different intervals. No germination. Could've been seeds, but will never know.

Lovely style Hugh. I have been gardening for almost fifty years and I keep learning things. Love all the youtube channels! Is there a video showing how to create that pole bean structure? So right about the yearly mistakes. Every year there is something you count on that does not deliver, for whatever reason, even zucchini! But there will be another crop that surprises you by yielding tons. I am in the process of downsizing from an acreage to a small lot in the village and getting excited all over. I embarrassingly have cried in my fall tear down this year. I am a teacher and I was terrified to go back to in school 🏫 instruction ( what we did!) and tearing down the garden represented the end of a very great season of solitude in the garden. I had to let it sit... then began to plan.. and now in Feb. started seeds again under lights and I’m sensing they renewed feeling. Started cold stratifying this year in the fridge for the first time!

I have been binging on this channel for the last week and i have learned ALOT! It has given me the confiedence to go all in next year. This video was exactly what I needed at the exact right time. I know we are only half way thrue this season but my hands are full of other duties too .. (Digging money! LOL). I was slow to plant and clean up this year. We had an early snow storm over 2 days with about 25cm wet snow and leaves were still on the trees. Major disaster zone with over 30, 000 ciyy trees damaged and downed power lines. Made me forget some of the minor crop failures and focus on the positive as we had no significant tree damage. Finally pruned the damaged branches today and cleaned up the asparagus patch ... noticed some kale survivors! Thanks for all your ideas from a grateful Canadian.

What an inspiring film. With today's changes in the weather, gardening is becoming a bit of a lottery. I've been growing veg for decades in a very amateurish way but putting food on the table and the difference in taste from supermarket stuff is a joy. When buying seeds look closely at the harvest period. Last year I put leeks in that were an early cropper. My mistake !! I wanted veg to stay in the veg plot to keep us going through the winter months. Again, planting in a rush caused me many a failure so attention to detail is important. I'm only just learning that your choice of leek seed variety, etc can have a different growing period. Thanks Huw. Great words

Always good advice Huw. Wise beyond your years someone said below in the comments, and I agree. Doing the research on climate is well worth the effort, as is research on the biology of the plants you hope to grow and the soil you hope to grow them in.

As a gardener that has been doing it a while i am always observing to see what needs to be done differently and to see how i can improve on methods and at the same time make my work easier and quicker as life is real and busy. Two pieces of advice to new gardeners is to start small and do not get discouraged if all does not go as planned. Failures should lead to future success.

Really enjoyed this video, thanks for all the tips and encouragement. I'm in my third year of learning gardening and having so much fun trying everything. I just ended the growing season in our new property and while not everything went to plan, it was great to enjoy those things that did grow well. Huw all good advice.For mental awareness, the open min approach is the best way to to go forward, i treat the gardening like visiting a good friend, somewhere to enjoy, release any negativity and go home relaxed and refreshed. Failures are definitely a learning curve in the vision, peas and certain brassicas were my failures this year, but the rewards i reeped made up for them tenfold. Thanks for another great share Huw. I found this video incredibly useful! Ressuring! I am fairly new to growing my own fruit veg. Was quite disheartened lately after some of my seedlings perished when I put them out. Your so right! I spent all last winter watching, reading and planning for my first vegetable garden. I tried out different methods and techniques and kept a journal to record what worked and what did not. We’re actually forecasted to have our first frost this Thursday which is two weeks earlier than forecasted so I’ve been frantically finishing my transition to my winter garden. Thanks

I remember when Monty Don lost all his cabbages to pigeons! It happens to all of us - and my cabbages are now well covered over! Top video, I have to say, some years ago I set aside a part of the garden for some veg, at the end of the season I gravelled it over and put a bbq and some furniture on it 🤣 I'm 58 now and take life more slowly, I don't mind a bit of hard graft, so this year, I'm gonna clear it again and put 3 raised beds, potatoes in pots (simplify gardening), also a herb garden in containers Tom's and peppers in a small green house, can't wait.

I started my veg garden late this year,but already looking forward to next season,not wishing the time away, as Huw said,there is lots to learn and books to read.Im also in Wales (North Wales) and the wind is unforgiving ! If only the fire ants and voles will go away!! They actually "undo" all my progress. The fire ants make tremendous tunnel networks under my raised beds with landscaping cloth/wire underneath to keep voles out. Can poke a stick 2 feet into the ground before they get too narrow. Then the open no-dig beds get eaten with voles and infested with fire ants too. South Carolina.

I’m glad I bumped into this video. I’ve bought a house with a plot of land recently and I’m quite overwhelmed I must admit. Trying to visualize where what to put. The last few weeks I’ve been watching a lot of RU-vid about growing farming when to prune and more.. so I guess it’s not time wasted :)

I love Huw Richards videos - with this one I actually substituted the word ‘life’ every time he said ‘vegetable’......brilliant....his advice spans both aspects; life advice wrapped up in vegetable growing advice....do you realise this Huw ? 😁.....then I forwarded the link to some non vege growing friends....I tell you he’s the best this young man, his manner is so soothing. And unlike him , put some chicken on the bed with electric fencing for a day they will eat up the green trash , bugs in the ground to reduce pest infestation and do some poop di poop for free fertliser. Then you can broadfork the soil and add layer of manure and plant away ! No need to take the trash to another place to compost ! Most of it gets eaten up by the chicken. dry matter will decompose under the soil layer.

Foxglove883 I have large lazy Permaculture beds. It is my preference, as I dislike the aesthetic of symmetry. It is much easier, but unbelievable productive and flexible. Just personal preferences..

If you're not able to, I recommend researching plants that grow well indoors! You can plant them by your windows, and they're a good start to self-sufficiency.

Can't wait for next year! Best thing I got this year's was a really cheap greenhouse. I grew aubergine , red peppers and banana a peppers as well as chilli and sweet potatoes. Minimal harvest but maximum enjoyment ☺

I love gardening failures. They are so valuable in teaching you a lesson and making you a better gardener. This year, I learnt you must stake sprouts or wind will cause your sprouts to 'blow'. I also learnt to crop my onions as soon as they fall over because leaving them out exposed to the weather will allow rot to set in. Simple stuff but mistakes I will never make again.

I'm in zone 9- America. Northern Florida-sub tropical. What amazes me is the difference between what a packet of seeds has on it for the date of planting and what experience dictates.
