Last September, my fiancé and I was traveling. I woke up early in the hotel, watched this video while drinking coffee, thought it over, and by lunchtime I told my fiancé that I saw this video of a guy making a ring from wood and I wanted to buy a lathe to make my wedding ring the same way he did. In May I bought a Rikon Midi sized variable speed lathe. I’ve been practicing and I’m confident enough to give this project a shot. We are getting married May of 2020. Wish me luck and thank you for the video!

John Techs rings done! I actually made three. Copper was a little intimidating and my skin is sensitive so I used a premade titanium core. I matched that with a titanium wire inlay. I didn’t do a great job with the UV resin on the first ring. The second one was perfect but I picked a core that was a little big. The third one is the winner. Unfortunately it’s sitting in my safe and I’m unmarried. With COVID, we delayed our wedding by a year. I’ll see if I can link up an image of the final ring in my google drive.
@JohnnyDangerouss

@@BlkHunterGatherer Thanks for the update! Im sorry to hear that your wedding was delayed. Ours was supposed to be a lot bigger but instead of delaying we downsized to only 20 guests. I'm interested because I'm getting married in about 10 days and I have already purchased all the tools to make my ring, I'm also using a pre-made titanium core, but I already had the lathe so I didn't have to buy a whole lot. I'd love to know more about your experience with the titanium wire if you care to share.

Sticking your fingers inside a rotating piece of powered machinery (12:52) gives me the willies. I once worked with a guy who, for unknown reasons, stuck his finger into the hollow shaft of a rotating buffer wheel. Now when he sees someone he knows he gives them a high four.

I just found this channel and pretty much immediately subscribed. I've seen plenty of other people make cool rings or other workshop-type stuff, but you seem genuinely interested in your viewers being able to understand what and how you make these rings - even be able to do it themselves. I really appreciate your detailed, intuitive, and educational explanations throughout the video, keep it up!! Lastly, I agree with your statement, "less is more". Some workmen sometimes over complicate their designs, causing a crowding effect with the materials. It takes a humility as an artist and a true understanding of one's craft to design something that just allows the natural beauty of the materials really shine.

Come again? He leaves alot out. Plus he added a trick designed to ruin and set people back with his "tips". 1. He intentionally left out why his Q Tip was turning black while he was polishing the inside. I of course know why that is and he also did it wrong by skipping the follow up step to that, thus his cooper is not mirror shiny. 2. When he verbally tells people to use a heat gun when cleaning up the excess it is a trick and it will melt the finshing line causing the entire ring to fall into the Alumi-UV. 3. He doesn't discuss grain orientation when cutting the veener strips. 4. He leaves out the wet sanding and buffing of the fishing string node. 5. He leaves out lathe speeds that could fling Alumi-UV back at people who don't know better. This is one of the most masterful jerk around tutorials I have ever watched.

just from my experience with both products it would be about 5 coats of a thick CA, but AlumiUV isn't brittle like CA, making it much stronger.

@TempestRings
@TempestRings 6 лет назад
ya with the copper already being so soft it conducts off the heat very quickly anyway, and I don't need to increase workability a ton anyway. Mostly it stops the band from splitting if I stretch to aggressively.

I enjoyed the video. As with most things you take what you can get from it. I realized a new method to do inlays. I have a few non-ring wood turning projects where I can adapt the inlays (brass inlays for my wood turned Harry Potter Wands). So keep making videos, I might learn more!
