Hey Patrick, new but big fan, when drilling through marble or granite, make sure your bit is obviously diamond coated and second don't keep going up and down with the press. The repeated pressure is what makes it break so just let it spin and go down slowly and consistently while keeping it lubricated. I work with granite and quartz as my job and know how fragile it is but that should help a lot

I don't think you know what you talking about. Personally if i were the one making the videos, and i had someone leave a comment as informative and well thought out as the one you are responding to (as opposed to the kind I'm sure you'd leave on a video if you saw them doing something different than you would do, "Tat not how u do tat stoopid"), I would appreciate the input regardless of whether or not the person commenting was saying something i already knew. Constructive criticism is how people learn.

Things I love about this video: 1) You talk about having 10k subscribers. Now you have over 500k. Congrats man, a dream come true, I'm sure. 2) You show your mistakes. As a jewelry maker on the hobbyist level, it's so nice to know I"m not the only one that can have a crappy day when it comes to trying to get something done. Thanks for showing us the difficulty in cutting that marble. The videos that make everything look SO easy hurt my soul when I try and have problems ;) Congrats on an amazing talent, an extremely successful RU-vid channel, and all that goes along with that.

i like your work patrick, just a few tips for you, the reason the granite is breaking is because it is not supported correctly, look back at your vid and you can see it flexing under the cutting pressure, you need something harder than a few strips of wood under it, a slab of alloy would be better, and support all of the marble not just the edges. also try mounting or clamping the dremmel to the tool post of the lathe for more accurate results when you are grinding down to a final size, this will leave you with alot less runout. for good results in machining a good setup is usualy more crucial than cutting for a good result with less runout. if you have any questions feel free to ask.... great vid.

You have to support stone very evenly when drilling. The camping down, which you realized, plus a solid base will help with a successful hole. I would hot glue the stone to a piece of mdf in the areas that aren’t rings and just hold it with your hand.
@eddieagha5851
@eddieagha5851 4 года назад
This video is old, so you may have already done this but if you fabricate or buy a tool holder to mount on the lathe bed for your Dremel your facing-off for your rings will be less time consuming and more precise. Also from one stone cutter to another support whatever you are cutting on the bottom and clamp from the sides only with soft bumpers. I like your work!

Been a joy watching your video. About the drilling, what the marble guys say. And the water is not just for lubrication but also against friction heating. Stones are prone to (emotional) breakdown when they don't get heated evenly. Drilling when the material is already in a bath of hot water might yield a more consistent result. It will definitely be more messy though...

Hey mate great channel! I drill through marble, glass and porcelain all the time. You've gotta have a completely flat surface otherwise every time you apply pressure the twisting and flexing caused by an uneven surface will break, snap and shatter these materials every time. Hope that helps for next time. Your a great artist and I love your rings!

Interesting video, didn't know anything about ringmaking before. Don't forget you can add voice over to your videos when you're doing things like sanding and polishing. Just saying "And now I spray on some water and polish with 320 sand paper" makes for a nicer viewing experience then silence. :)

Michael Castelan is correct...From a thermodynamic point of view when drilling something hard but brittle like marble...A lot more speed, a lot of liquid and less pressure downward...Hope this helps...Great work...Would love a price but with 14K White gold instead of copper and white marble...Let me know what price you'd want...Love the work

Very nice video but I would make one suggestion for you, I noticed you used diamond platted core drill bits. I'd recommend Sintered core bits, they have diamonds embedded within the metal not bonded on top. leaves a cleaner core and lasts about 30 times longer which will bring your costs down :). you can buy them pretty cheap on ebay. I'm a jewler and lapidarist and love carving stones. Good luck and great vids
@thomasraseta5024
@thomasraseta5024 7 лет назад
Patrick Adair Designs they will work on that as well. if the plated cuts through it then Sintered will as well. diamonds are the hardest known substance and cut thru anything. only difference is Sintered last much longer because as the metal is worn down thru use new diamonds are exposed. look them up online to get a better explanation then what I have said, you won't be sorry that's for sure. I quit using cheap plated bits long ago. enjoy 😃

You might try 3M Trizact Sanding / polishing pads, you can cut them into manageable strips and use similar to Emory cloth, multiple grits. Also, you could install felt pad tool to the dremel / grinder and apply polishing rouge paste while on the lathe.

Fine Piece Of Work. Fascinating To Watch True Craftsmanship Unfolding Step By Beautiful Step. One more thing..........I'd really love to see an inlay of 24K gold rather than that of copper. This is not to say that copper isn't beautiful in its own right - but it's just that I have this odd fetish for this - the most marvelous of all materials on earth - - solid gold. The weight; the color; the glistening quality and the exquisite feel of the most precious metal there is [Im my humble opinion.]
