Hello Crystal, can you help me. I followed the tutorial up to where he added the foam the 1st time but its to much. I tried the different settings in the attribute editor but no success. How can I minimize the foam so its a little bit on the water?
This tutorial is amazing! Thank you so much. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong but when I try to reduce the foam size with the Cusp Min it doesn't work. Do you have any advice, please?
Thank you for this amazing tutorial, but I have 1 q...when i click the Spectral Waves button, I see the warning " cached playback: Safe mode - cache disabled as unsupported nodes were found in the scene" .. can explain me what it means?
for some reason there is no cache folder in the project folder? its caching the images for the foam somewhere but i have no idea where, the cash folder is correct but nothing in there. \cache\Boss\\\
What processor and graphics card are you using? How long does it take for you cache all and render? I am not too sure if my render was completed or not.
I'm running a Xeon dual 2.6GHz process, 32GB RAM, nVidia Geforce K4000. For this patch of ocean, it takes about 15-20min to render 120 frames at 540p. For the tutorial after this one (full ocean), it can take an hour or two to do the entire ocean with a high number subdivisions. Note that your graphics card doesn't matter all that much when using BOSS since it uses mainly the CPU.
Maya's documentation says the red channel of the foam maps, not the alpha channel, are the actual foam values. So what does the alpha channel actually represent?
I'm sure you've had this question but i can't seem to find it below, I'm having trouble with the Image source for the foam when I click 'Use Image Sequence'. The tile that shows the image source (Foam in this instance) shows black after clicking 'Use Image Sequence' and shows 'exr doesn't exist, node file2'. Have I exported this files wrong from your download link?
Actually the demo file doesn't have the foam EXRs included in it, because the file sizes are so huge. You'll need to generate them yourself using the steps in the tutorial.
Maya Learning Channel oh weird, the Foam works without clicking ‘Use Image Sequence’. I’ll have to have a closer look at the tutorial 😬 thanks for the reply.
Hello, I was able to get to where you added the foam the 1st time and its to much. I followed your steps but it will not minimize the foam. How can I dial it down so its a little bit on the water?
Thank you so much for the tutorial. One question though, when I render it with CPU its fine but when I use GPU render ocean becomes very dark. I use RTX 30 series. Why’s that?
Hey, thanks for the amazing tutorials. But I have a problem. My ocean plane looks too blocky/pixelated and I can't find a solution?? I'm working with 1024 subdivisions on the plane and I have 2 SpectralWaves, but it still looks very blocky. How can I make it smooth? Thanks a lot!!!!
Did you cache the ocean at a lower resolution before upping it to 1024? If so, you'll need to disable the caches first (in the BOSS Editor, change the green checkmarks to red) to see any changes.
Hey... curious, i love the series but how would i use this tech to make a giant Surfer-styled sea wave? I can't seem to find any material on this either... unfortunately there was a surfer called Maya so searching Maya surfer wave brings up a real life surfer!
Check out part 4 of this series - you'll need to do something similar (but on a much larger scale) to what it shows. Basically, you'll need to create some dynamic particles and then "push" them with an underwater force to generate the wave (much like in real life).
Are there any tips to integrate a static collider object into a scene? Rocks etc, I cannot seem to get the spectral or wave solvers to interact with a non moving object. Waves should reflect off the object, but have no interaction.
Hello! First of all I want to thank you for the video as it was insanely helpful with finally figuring out how to get some water into Maya. I did run into a few concerns while following your steps. The first one is I received a message on the bottom right next to where you have the text box to type into MEL. It was something around the lines of: maya cached playback safe mode. That and some mention of unsupported nodes. I was wondering what exactly the problem is and how I can fix it. The other problem I have is when I click on export cache to preview a single frame like you did in the video when you made the foam adjustments it stays exactly the same without showing any changes. I would greatly appreciate the help and thanks again for uploading these videos!
Cached playback is a feature that improves playback speed in the Viewport. At this time, it's not compatible with FX like BOSS, which is why you're getting that warning. It's nothing to worry about. Remember, when you make settings adjustments, you need to turn off the caching in the BOSS Editor. Otherwise, the simulation will just go back to the old cache (representing the old settings).
hi , i'm doing a simulation with boss, but i have some problems. and i have some questions: first i create a plane with 120 x 120, because i need more space for the shifting ship. and i want to know if when simulate the foame with particles, the model used for this (the simulation) have impact in the procesing, if it have many polygons? thanks.
Andres Fernando Polania Castaño the sim will run slower, but it should still work. You’ll definitely want to cache the effect to an alembic file for rendering (which I show in a later tutorial)
For reasons that I'm not sure if I will ever understand, the bifrost plugin is loaded, but the menu is not showing up as specified by this tutorial. I'm not sure why, but it's just not showing up in the headers. I just don't know what to do.
@@Autodesk_Maya So I found out what the problem was last night. Yes I was on the FX tab, but there were more plugins that needed to be loaded aside from BOSS having to do with Bifrost. I forget which specific plugin it was, but searching up Bifrost in general in the plugin manager's search bar and then making sure bifrost related plugins are loaded did the trick.
Yeah i see, i'm actually rendering a sequence :) Another question: in Maya 2017 it don't seems to have the foam attributes in the spectral waves settings. No Box to activate it... I think I'm gonna have to upgrade to Maya 2018
I'm trying to make a longer animation, but even when I redo the cache my waves are not working. I mean they work until the frame 120 and then It's just a flat plan. Can you help me with this?
It sounds like you're still reading from the cache. To make double-sure you're not relying on it, I recommend deleting the old cached files in the cache directory, then regenerating them.
Hello I have problem for foam, Warning: htm boss, bossSpectralWave1.foam.0019.exr doesn't exist, node file2. I think comparing to your video some files are missing ? for the foam is that normal ? (I turn the Image sequence and had an error like missing files and going to ''53'' not like you it's written 120) Thx fo the help/futur reply
Sounds like you need to regenerate your spectral wave / foam cache. When you do, try setting the Time Slider speed to "Play Every Frame" to ensure the cache is generated properly.
Hey, thanks for this amazing tutorial. I've tried this with redshift. But, projection doesn't really work in redshift. It works a little bit with linking "out alpha" node to displacement shader (instead of out color node in arnold). but it loses a lot of information. If you don't mind, could you let me know how to make this tutorial work in redshift as well? Thanks a lot! :)
Foam doesnt get less, even opening a new Project and making an entirly new Scene, the foam is not being reduced by Cusp Min. Why is that? If i make Cusp Min to 1 i get a lot of it but there is no difference between 0,1-0.01 or 0.001. I see a lot of people had a issue with this
excuse me sir, first of all many thanks for this video, my question is; how can I catch this as and alembic and export it to a real time engine (using unity which support alembic and fbx)
Hi there, I'm running into a real issue at about the 10 minute mark, I've enabled foam, works fine, disable use cache/enabled export cache, however when I lower my cusp min value, I get no change at all in foam amount. I've been trying every option in the panel available and I'm not able to see any change, I'm using Maya 2019, getting slightly frustrated, and I thought you may have an idea for a fix. Thanks!
@@Autodesk_Maya Actually it was a simple issue, I was using foam maps from a different project file from a few days ago. Thanks for the quick response! I've been doing your tutorials all week lol.
Sorry I'm not sure what you mean. The video shows how to apply a texture to the ocean plane. The "background" you see is just a skydome light (you can just delete that or change the file).
Manny Morales Is the idea that you want waves facing outward on each side of the cube? If so, my recommendation would actually be to apply them as textures to each face using the technique shown in the next part of this tutorial. If you just apply the BOSS solver to a cube like in this one, it’ll still work - but it will treat the cube as a single thick body rather than 6 flat planes (which is likely what you’re experiencing).
Out of curiosity, why would you want to apply it to multiple planes? It would become very difficult to line them up to have matching wave patterns. And anyway, Maya only supports one solver in the scene at once. If you wanted to simulate two different bodies of water, you'd probably want to do them seperately and then animation cache each of them for performance anyway. Or I suppose you could combine the seperate planes into a single mesh (leaving them detached) the run a single solver on the result. If you're ever trying to represent one body of water though, I'd highly recommend using just a single mesh for a more consistent overall look.
yea I was trying to have them represent a single body but even if there were multiple solvers it only did it with 1. Also would you know why it's assigning 2 BossGeoProperties to each mesh I select?? there's no duplicates or anything so I just don't know what's going on there. Also possibly how to get it to simulate faster?
@@mamoruk4143 Sorry I misspoke earlier. You can apply multiple solvers to a single mesh in order to represent different "levels" of waves, but you can only apply them to a single mesh. Your best bet to have more than one mesh is to simulate them separately and then alembic cache the meshes afterward. However, for any single body of water, I would only recommend one mesh anyway. To speed up simulation, you'll either need to lower the number of subdivisions on the mesh, or improve your CPU and RAM. Once you have simulated it once though, you can apply the waves as a displacement to a flat plane, which will remove the need for any calculations and greatly speed up the scene anyway (I show you how to do that in part 2 of this series).
Hi Sir ... Question is that Boss plugin is not showing to me in Plugin Manager of my Maya 2019? So i cannot be able to load . How i can get it in plugin manager . Do help please. Thanks in advance.
Are you using Maya LT? BOSS is only available in the full version of Maya. If you are using that, then you may need to reinstall if the plugin isn't appearing (it's possible it wasn't placed in the plugins folder properly)
Today i downloaded only maya bifrost 2019 and installed separately to my PC. Now Boss is showing in plugin manager . Thanks a lot for your reply . Good day.
I am having issues with the foam, it looks like the foam you had after initially putting it in, reducing the cusp min value made absolutely no difference. I am using the 2020 Student Version of maya.
A few people below have had this same issue. Make sure you're regenerating your BOSS cache each time you change the cusp values, otherwise you'll just be viewing the old cached values regardless of what your current settings are.
ik I'm late but the way I fixed having this same issue was deleting the original cache files manually in file view, generating new a cache and then relocating the new files to the emission editor. I'm sure its not the most efficient way but it worked.
I followed this to the T (apart from size cos i wasn't expecting to add BOSS to my scene) but the foam looks stretched :( ... looks fine in the 2D image tho, so I'm confused as to what would be causing the distortion.
When you say "apart from the size", does that mean you resized the plane into non-uniform proportions? if so, that could be the issue since you're applying a square image to a stretched plane.
@@Autodesk_Maya the size of my scene, I created it in centimetres so when I use the measurements in the tutorial, the ocean plane is too small. When I increase the size, it messes up the waves.
@@randomMaui I would actually move on to part 2 of this tutorial, and then apply THAT to to your scene. Rather than scaling the ocean up, you can just tile it (just make sure the wave size is the way you want first). This will also help with animation performance since you'd be able to strip out the BOSS simulation.
hi i making the same ocean but facing problem the file animation is getting very slow ....i had delete the the history but removed the wave animation .i had to playblast the scene to view the animation ....in this scene i have given a camera animation and working in 6lakh 23thousand poly kindly help
How much RAM do you have on your machine? BOSS is quite RAM intense, so if you don't have enough it could be affecting performance. You can also try reducing the number of faces on the polygon plane to make the ocean less complex (this would of course affect the quality though).
This is very nice thank you. Somehow I got this error message??? strange. Any idea why? // C:/Users/pasca/OneDrive/Documents/maya/projects/learning/scenes/ocean.mb # [BossBlender] Created a new BOSS Blender Cached Playback: The presence of unsupported Boss node 'BossSpectralWave1' has triggered Safe Mode, and caching is disabled. You can continue work, but caching has stopped. Remove animation from 'BossSpectralWave1', or delete the node entirely, to resume caching.
Thanks for the tutorial. Quick question... Is there currently a way to adjust the speed of the Spectral Waves? I have a nice wave system setup, but the waves are moving too fast. I'm trying to figure out a way to slow things down. Any suggestions?
Hmm, you could try just slowing down the wind speed, but that will also shrink your wave size (because the system is built to be physically accurate). Instead, I'd recommend caching out the BossOutput geometry as an Alembic cache (Cache > Alembic Cache > Export Selected to Alembic). Import the Alembic Cache via the same menu, then select it. In the Attribute Editor, you can set the playback speed of the cache to whatever you like.
@@Autodesk_Maya - Thanks for the reply! Slowing the Alembic option may be the way to go. Hopefully the slowing down of the cache or essentially stretching the cache won't cause interpolation issues with the mesh. Definitely a possibly solution though and something I will try. If that doesn't work, it may just be a matter of playing with scene scale and finding the right combo of parameters.
Great tutorial, thanks for the help. I did run into the issue of when i apply the aiStandard surface deep water preset, my waves disappear. They are still an object and i can click on them but if I render the screen is just 100% white/gray. Am I missing a file or something? If I don't apply a preset and simply change the color then when i render i can see my waves perfectly fine. Please, anyone help:/ Thanks
It's called a "Skydome" and should be in the Arnold menu. If you don't have an Arnold menu, make sure the "mtoa" plugin is loaded in the Plug-in Manager.
@@Autodesk_Maya How do you think I could incorporate waves into an Autodesk Revit model that needs water in it. I am working on a pier model for construction and architecture purposes as part of a marine research project.
@@hj2479 You'd probably have to export the revit model as an FBX file, then import it into Maya. Then you can use BOSS to add waves as shown in this tutorial.
Could it be that the timeline at the bottom is only 11 frames wide? You can try increasing the number in its bottom right side to increase that. Or if you mean that the animation stops after 11 frames, you'll probably need to redo the cache (turn off the caches for each solver then use the cache button as shown in the video).
It's difficult to explain but my surface does not "move" like yours it's like too flat while yours moves like a hanky.Sorry but it's just really difficult to explain
yeah super cool, but the problem is when I want to change the resolution in the global attribute, maya crash, I have the 2019 version, and I'm not the only one in this case, so if someone has any solution plz
Yes, that's normal. Rendering outputs an "image sequence", which you need for compositing - the next step after 3D work. To view the sequence, you'll need an image sequence viewer (I use DJView).
FBX doesn't support the actual BOSS architecture itself. To get around this, you can select the ocean and go to Cache > Alembic > Export to Alembic. Then import that cache into an empty scene and save that as FBX instead to just keep the deforming geometry.
@@arktetos9138 The Alembic cache will be an animated mesh, so you should be fine. But in short no, FBX doesn't have support for BOSS itself (that's a Maya-specific feature), so you can't just include the BOSS simulation in an FBX file.
