Creating Custom Skins/Textures in Virt-A-Mate - Beginner Tutorial, Part 1

Outline:
1) Rundown of texture types
2) Where to start when creating a new skin
3) The two major challenges - seams and color matching
4) Demo: Using frequency separation in GIMP to color match a new feature:
- Duplicate layer
- Gaussian blur the duplicate until all desired details are lost
- Set blurred layer mode to Grain Extract
- Create New Layer from Visible; set that new layer to Grain Merge mode,
and return the blurred duplicate mode to Normal
There's so much to know about texture creation that I didn't include here -
file management; how to best use FaceGen; how to create spec, gloss, and normal maps with GIMP or Photoshop; choosing reference materials; what edits turn a photo into a good texture in VAM; 3D/2D editing workflow... the list goes on. Keep an eye out for Part 2 next to cover some of these more in-depth topics.

Super helpful video Syrinxo! I love your creations and honestly would love to support you on patreon if you intend to create more tutorials like this! Heck even if you don't want to make dedicated tutorials even showing your process "vids of development" so I can try to learn to make higher quality models and textures I'd be appreciative! If you have knowledge of how to create and then export custom morphs from Blender I would totally be interested in that as well and based on your Shakea and other models I imagine you had to create those in something like Blender? (plus, it would help the community in general with more people trying to push the boundaries until 2.0 comes out! Thanks)

I wasn't able to figure out how ur supposed to export a texture set from FaceGen. The only options I was able to see was to export a Daz mesh preset.

For some reason, the color of the skin textures I make always turns really weird when it is put into vam.

Hi, thanks for your question. Yes, there is software that can take a photo of a face (if it meets requirements) and generate both a texture in the Daz3D Genesis 2 format (which VAM uses) and a morph to provide a rough approximation of the facial geometry. This program, called "FaceGen," is easy to use. However, making the final product look good - realistic and high-quality - takes a lot of skill and work with additional programs, such as Photoshop and SubstancePainter. Even more so for creating a very close likeness. The shape, as well, will take a lot of work to be close to the original.

Great question! DAZ 3D has several different generations of human models. VAM uses the Genesis 2 platform, and Genesis 2 textures will work with VAM (though you do need to pick the correct in-game model for your texture -- specifically, Olympia skins don't match exactly with other G2F models). As a side note, we are all pretty excited for the beta launch of VAM 2 (hopefully before 2023), because it uses Genesis 8 (also compatible with Genesis 3, or at least easily convertible?), which as some significant improvements in both model geometry and texture UV map partitioning.

Ah, yes! That is the correct question to ask! Here is a guide that will take you through the process to allow painting (including projection painting and texture wrapping) across UV seams. @@hankb7725 Yes, this part of the guide is a bit unclear. You need to open the OBJ file in a text editor (I recommend Notepad++) and do a search-and-replace to replace all instances of "usemtl" with "g" (there should be 29, iirc). This will allow Blender to see the various body parts as part of a group, which allows painting over seams, rather than using the uv map separations VAM provides in the accompanying MTL file.

@@b_l_a_c_k-l_i_t_e If you're talking about one of the textures built in to VAM, that's not possible. Those textures are only licensed by DAZ to VAM for in-game use and aren't accessible. The only exception are the "Custom" skins; those are available in the VAM install folder at Custom/Atom/Person/Textures/[Female, Male]/Custom. Skins made by other creators, like myself, are in the Textures folder of their shared character VAR file (it is a renamed ZIP file , open with any ZIP utility). I hope that helps!

@@b_l_a_c_k-l_i_t_e I should add that VAM's built in textures come from two places, and can be bought. The first sets in VAM's list are on the DAZ asset store (make sure you are buying Genesis 2 skins only! G3/5/8 don't work in VAM and are not easy to convert). The later, better ones are made by RenVR, and I believe they're all also available on his Patreon for a pretty cheap subscription.
