I'm really happy to hear you talk through your process without any music! It's very interesting and even a few gaps in talking are fine too. Your voice is very easy to listen to and you say enough without ever over doing the talking...if you know what I mean! 🌼

Your commentary is just as valuable as the video. Your comment on finding a style hits home for me, as I'm just starting out I don't really know what/how I want to paint. Your videos (and others) are helping me with both as I discover both processes and aesthetics that appeal to me. Thank you for your generosity! Also, isn't it complicated to navigate between your aesthetic and what the client "orders"? Thanks for your thoughts.
@BettyFranksArt
@BettyFranksArt 5 лет назад
Hi Frank, the journey of finding your voice is so necessary for every artist. Just keep on experimenting until you find what speaks to you most. When my clients order a commission from me, they are wanting my style of art. I work with them to figure out which of my paintings they like best and also discuss colors. Between the two, I create a piece. I have never had a client not want their commission. I allow them to make a couple of modifications (like more of a specific color, etc.) until they're happy with the piece. I hope that helps!

Hello Betty, I understand how challenging it was to create this piece with a colour palette required by the buyer when, as you said, you paint and design from instinct and soul as each new piece evolves but despite this commission is stunning. I loved the coral and teal together which harmonised with the all the other colours. I was interested to learn about your incorporating calm corners, brilliant, and this technique enhances the bold and elevates the vibrant colours, marks and overall artwork. The yellow corner was driving me mad, sorry - very naughty of me, I was so happy when you did not like it either; it looked fabulous once the teal was blended through it. Thank you so much for your generosity in giving tutorials and sharing your painting techniques and knowledge. Xxx

Thank you so much, Betty, for letting us peek in while you work. It's very generous of you to put that out for all to see. I'm so intrigued by your style and your sense of colour! I'm currently in the process of finding my artistic voice as I enjoy the world of abstract intuitive expressionism and also have my studio set up in our single car garage. :) It seems we share a similar approach to painting intuitively, but I'm curious to know how you finish your pieces. Do you seal them? If so, do you prefer a matte or a glossy finish to these paintings. I feel like they would benefit from either but I'm curious to know what you prefer? Thanks again! Take care. :D
@BettyFranksArt
@BettyFranksArt 5 лет назад
Hi Meredith! Thank you so much for watching the video! I varnish all my pieces that I sell. I use a spray varnish or fixative first to seal the mark making and then I use a fluid varnish. I have used matte, satin and gloss on my pieces. It really depends on the artwork in terms of deciding what type of finish I want on it. My smaller pieces almost always get gloss and lately, my larger pieces have been finished with matte. It's a mood thing! Here's a link to my process of varnishing art on paper. The same applies to my canvases: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KBg4GjajaPg.html Thank you again!

Reading comments on here, someone wrote that they were trying these techniques and they were in the 'awful big mess stage'. Well I understood their comments even though I don't quite think I'm making a 'big mess' but I'm not sure where I'm heading..... yet! Then I can hear you now talking about exactly what I'm saying! How to get to where you want to be etc.....I have to keep telling myself to keep going and I will get there....I am starting to notice what I'm feeling about the positives I'm producing and it's getting into a familiar sort of mark making that I feel happy about...I say to myself when I hesitate that I can't learn more by just not doing something and holding back in case I 'ruin' what I've done... You do have to try everything you can imagine to get to where you want to be!!! I'm lecturing myself here! You are so good at talking through what you're doing, it's very helpful to hear you explain yourself. 🌻

I have just now discovered you and your work. What a delight and thrill. I love that you talk though your process. ( I usually have to silence the videos with , to me, jarring and distracting, music.) It’s so interesting to hear why and how you choose a color or a tool, decide to add or obliterate an element, alter a shape. It’s really educational how the painting started out as a very different piece from the final one and how you worked through the subsequent layers to achieve the finished painting. I have been in a real impasse with my work and watching and listening to you is giving me a much needed uplift. - I really love how this painting turned out. Thank you for sharing your talent and time. I look forward to seeing more!

Hi. Me again! I just wanted to ask whether it is necessary to use acrylic paint or whether interior house paint could be used instead? The reason I ask is because here in the UK I can get quite large tins of house paint cheaply, so obviously they would last quite a long time, so therefore more economical. Just wondering?!
@BettyFranksArt
@BettyFranksArt 5 лет назад
I know of some who like to use house paint. I used it once on a piece I created for myself on canvas and it cracked. I didn't mind it, but I don't believe my customers would find it acceptable. I'm sure there's something you can add to the paint to keep it from cracking. If you're just painting for yourself, go for it! For me, since I sell my artwork, I don't want any issues with the art. I believe that house paint was meant to be used on a flat surface, not on canvas where the canvas moves. Thank you for watching and for your question!

I'm starting to work on small 8"x10" canvases. Question: I cannot afford Golden or Nova paints (although I'd love to buy them). The inexpensive paints that I use don't "pop" and dry to very matte. Would you recommend mixing with clear gesso, matte medium or gloss medium to make the colors more vibrant?
@BettyFranksArt
@BettyFranksArt 5 лет назад
Hi Sharon! Thank you for watching! Unfortunately, the less expensive paints have less pigment in them, which makes the colors dull. I don't know what additive would help. I would recommend that you try a few to see if it improves the quality. Nova is very affordable. Try their 4 oz jars. Wishing you all the best!

@sweetboo1022 5 лет назад
Hey Sharon, I use Liquitex Basics which are really nice and highly pigmented and I wait until Michaels runs a 40% off sale (either on the paints or for anything regularly priced) and stock up. For that price you get several ounces for $3. You can't beat that and Liquitex is a really great company and they have a good lightfastness rating, the highest rating.
@sharonstratis2846
@sharonstratis2846 5 лет назад
@@sweetboo1022 Thanks for the tip! Golden brand seems very expensive. The Nova brand isn't too bad, but I may try the Liquitex as I can get that in my local craft store.

@@sharonstratis2846 Hobby Lobby carries a very inexpensive brand called masters touch and every other week they have it for 50% off so you can get it for $2.50 for 4 ounce tube. I will say though that it's not great if you're trying to paint detailed work but if you're into the abstracts it's not so bad. Rhe other bad thing about it is it doesn't even have a lightfastness rating so don't expect it to be something that's going to last for a long time but if you're just starting out and you want something cheap to practice with that would probably be your best bet... if you have a Hobby Lobby close to you. Good luck & start creating. Cheers

I never clean my plastic palette that's on my wall. I use the same type of plastic as my palette on my table. With that one, I let a few layers of paint dry before I peel it off. Betty - I've been following your page for a while and it's really inspired me to do more abstract work. I'm curious about the Nova Paints you use. I've always used the more heavy body paints like Golden and Liquitex. Is the color fastness the same with Nova? Is there an advantage (other than their crazy good pricing) to using these? Thanks in advance for the information and inspiration!

Hi Carol! Golden and Liquitex, in my opinion, are comparable to Nova (or I should say Nova is comparable to them!). The paint is more of a fluid paint. The colors are amazing. Buy a couple of 4 oz jars in your favorite colors and give them a try. Tell them I sent you! www.novacolorpaint.com Thank you for watching and commenting!

I so badly want to try the nova paint because the colors and price are amazing however if you live in NY or on the East Coast the shipping makes the price more expensive than Golden by a lot. I wish they would offer a free shipping option if you spend a certain amount because I wouldn't just buy one color I would place a big order....Just wanted you to be aware of this because its an issue for sure.

Hi Beth! Sadly, shipping anything these days is expensive. Companies like Amazon can offer free shipping because of the volume of sales. And, since the pandemic, the prices have gone up drastically. The best thing you can do is send them a message. If they hear from enough folks, I'm sure they'll find a way to increase their sales by reducing the price of shipping. Thank you!

Hi, I listened to you on the learn to paint podcast. I thought I didn't like abstract art but you have converted me! I love your work and your generosity in sharing your complete process. I'm just starting out, trying to self teach. I have a question if that's ok, with the china marker, when you paint over the marks does the paint cover the marks or do they show through because they're wax? Also I love the idea of using gesso instead of titanium white. Do you varnish the painting at the end and what sort of varnish do you use? Thank you!

So glad you've been converted, Shelly! Welcome to the wonderful world of abstract art! The China markers are a little bit waxy. That's funny... The last guy is instructing you on proper brush handling... Now that really is hilarious... Excuse me, but I never knew there was such a thing and now I personally am desperate to find out exactly how I'm supposed to hold my brush so I can be sure to break all those rules... You know how we artists are nonconformists because rules are such a nag, now really... Just the arrogance of some folks... Perhaps the best teachers are those who haven't forgotten how to learn and wonder if Larry has heard, you're brush handling is the latest craze... Of all the nerve, huh? Takes all types of people, sort of like handling brushes... Thank you, Master Krause

@ClaudyArfaras

@@BettyFranksArt Amen... It never crossed my mind because I'm more involved in what is on the canvas, which is what counts, in fact, that is all that counts... Philosophically speaking, it doesn't even matter who painted the image because all that ultimately matters is we have the Artwork for now and for the extended future and bet future generations laugh like I did when reading someone instructing you on anything... It truly made me laugh because I assumed he was joking... I do know of Artists without hands, so of course, you do it as you do, period... It was ridiculous to almost bizarre... I would have said to him, "thank you" and then do as you always do... I wouldn't have said anything other than "thank you"... Finally, you must know, negative respondents spread our name and work better than positive viewers... There's a slogan they teach advertising experts in college, my sister being one, the slogan is, "All Publicity Is Good Publicity" and it's so true and I learned long ago to love my negative responders because they are such good publicity, they really are.... So, I just smile and hope they hate me on Facebook and Twitter too... Tell everyone how bad my work is and I will sincerely thank you... LOL Master Krause, it's just part of being popular and hopefully, it gets worse, not better... LOL Guess it's all in how we look at it because it really is... Just think of today's top celebrities, where would they be without their negative publicity and even top Madison Avenue Ad Agencies even try to generate the negative publicity because it can most always be positive in its impact... So learn to love your negative responders, and thank them for all the work they do in spreading your good, fantastic, Artwork... ..
