You are so generous with your time and knowledge! I love how this was done with basically one color. I'm learning to be brave! I am so happy to be following you here and on Instagram. Enjoy your new home and studio!
This was a mind blowing experience… this tutorial really opened my eyes & gave me a burst of new insight. I’m so inspired to get to a new canvas!! Thanks Lori
I'm a beginner, and I've been struggling with composition. This video, along with part 1, are so, so helpful. The most helpful instruction I've received. I appreciate that you showed close-ups of the work. Really, this has helped me so much. Can't wait to put this lesson into action tomorrow morning.
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist, it was! I learned some significant things when I tried this today. Really excited with what I'm learning. Thank you so much!
I have been painting for years and never tried an abstract until I watched some of your videos and techniques. Wow. So much fun. In the end I surprised myself at the result. Thanks for the inspiration.
Lori, you broke my mental ice block. I have worked so hard at transitioning from fine art (portrait/still life) to abstract and I was about to give up. But this video was the aha moment I needed. Thank you. Please make more videos.
This was a really cool tutorial. I took your advice and tried it without trying to copy you and I was so pleased with my results. I learned so much from this. Thank you for sharing
awesome!!!! a wonderful blend of watching & listening to you explain & I found this comprehendable in ways I haven't "picked up- got &/ related to"!! Thank YOU!xox0
Oh my god, I just saw your work on IG yesterday and started following you. You are amazing! And just found you by chance here, looking to learn how to do layers in abstract. Really excited to watch your videos. And I hope your new home brings much inspiration to you. Greetings from Dubai
This is so cool! I just moved to the extreme boonies where I have no Internet and I have to come to the lake to watch videos, make calls, etc. I particularly wanted to watch your videos, and had no idea you'd been MIA - and I'm very excited that you have moved so close to me! You are one of my favourite artists and online teachers. You'll love Almonte! Welcome to Eastern Ontario! Okay...now I can go watch the rest of the video!
Thank you so much. I hear you with the internet thing. Trying to upload a youtube video is an all day affair here ugh....I'm hoping to get back to making videos soon. Just waiting for lights to be set up.
Loved this tutorial. I am into paint pouring but really want to do abstract!!! I can’t wait to watch more of your videos. You are amazing to share your tips for free. I was curious on one thing. How much time do you leave before you add more layers. I have played around and learned quickly what muddying colors is. Haha. Also how do you prep your canvas and what do you do for sealing? Again, THANK YOU!!! So excited to try these!!!❤️
Congrats on your new space. Thank you so much for these instructional vids. Very generous and super informative. I sometimes find myself holding my breath while you work! Happy to have you “back”.
A tutorial on value which covers well, more techniques and approaches to painting than most tutorials out there. Excellent video! Congrats on the new studio!
Thank you, so happy I found you, and love your work. I was wondering what kind of brushes and what kind of pencil you are using? Is it a charcoal? Doesn't seem like color pencil. Im a beginner, no schooling!
I just discovered your channel. Great advice for myself a beginner exploring the world of abstract painting. My question is are markings drawn to fill them in with paint afterwards?
Thank you so much, that was so helpful, I have been living in the area of painting oil portrait studies, so abstract is something new to me. I have read a lot about famous Abstract Artists of the past, but, I became more and more confused, simplifying seems to be the way to begin. I am going back to you othere videos, especially the one using black, MSG Leum
Thank you, Lori! I have been binge watching your videos and hyping myself up to start my painting journey this year! A creative path I never thought I'd go... but here I am!! I am starting out with texture painting and also abstract painting now, thanks to you!! New subscriber from Melbourne, Australia! Much love to you, your kitty and your creativity! Going to keep binge watching now. haha! :D
What a great video - thank you Lori. It was very inspiring - I am guilty of wanting to use lots of colours when I paint and usually end up with a hot mess.... am definitely going to give this exercise a go...Hope you are enjoying living out in the country..... I so love your art - it's incredible.
Hey amazing lady, as always you rock!!!! This is so sweet of you to share your time out of your busy schedule to give us some pointers. Congrats on the move! It is so inspiring to following you on your art journey, which is giving me more confidence to get more creative. Enjoy your time in the country. I love being able to walk outside and enjoy nature in my PJ's with a coffee in my hand. Very healing!!!!
That was amazing. Thank you for teaching with such clarity and confidence, as well as being so generous with your knowledge! I’m really enjoying your videos and exploring a different style of painting. Congratulations on your new home, it’s wonderful!
So happy to finally have some time to join and watch some of your great videos. A question about your inktense pencils. Since they are water soluable I think you kept dipping it in water during the video. How do you avoid bleeding in your canvas? Wait till the end to use them and then seal before varnishing? Have a great weekend!
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist I think you have a video on that. I will check. I always use graphite which is not an issue. Keep up the great job Lori. Hope one day your new home offers painting retreats. I would be so there. Have a great weekend with your girls xxx
This was so helpful. I really like how you take the time to explain what you’re doing and go into detail. Can you tell me what’s the difference between layers and texture and/or the similarities with them. I’m confused about these terms.
Hi Lori, I recently subscribed to your videos. What do you do (or how do you do) it to remove the paint out of your supposedly empty paint containers (tubes and or jars)?
Thank you, Lori!!! This got me out of a hUuUUge art stump. Limiting your palette is a great tip to create better contrast (and it makes you think outside the box) Girl, you inspire sooooo much!!! haha
I’ve been waiting for this! Thank you for sharing this tutorial. It’s really interesting to see your techniques while listening to your explanation about colors & layers. Keep up the great work ☺️
Hi there! I came across your channel and love your work! Im an artist as well i do realism but recently ive been want to go a little abstract. I like realism but after so long it feels like it becomes like your in a box trying to get out lol anyway thank you for posting your videos ill keep watching 👍
I’m so excited and inspired to have found your content online and how fun that you’re Canadian and not very far away! Thank you for the lessons and inspiration you’re sharing 🇨🇦❣️
Love this Lori! What is that tiny ink pencil again?? looks like something I want! Thank you for your wealth of seriously practical information. I work with watercolors (abstract) but I still can't stop watching your videos. There are many things I can still apply, or will try!
@@somniatanaspazio214 I did some research and I think it is a Derwent inktense pencil. I am not sure if it is the outliner (which is an ink blue) or the regular black. They behave slightly different but I suggest you google them. Hope this helps!
Delightful! I follow you on IG, and enjoy that, but seeing you teach and work on YT is wonderful, longer and large format viewing is enjoyable. Love your work and so glad I found you here! Thanks.
Really enjoyed this. I´ve gotten so frustrated thinking painting is only good enough or valuable when "recreating" reality to the perfect detail. I much more prefer to work on intuition, instinct, emotion and just do whatever my mood wants to do. This is when painting imo becomes fun. Abuse the canvas a little, and really see where the painting takes me instead of being completely rational, have a set fixed plan, and be so cautious of every brush stroke and scared of making tiny mistakes. I guess there is a stigma towards modern art and abstract expressions. So I will be glad to piss some people off with my coming endeavor. Thanks for sharing
haHAHAHA THANKS FOR THE CHUCKLE. yes the stigma is people think this type of art is easy and it's actually the opposite. Have fun with piising off some people ❤️
I love this exercise on layering and discerning value. As I commented about another of your videos about layering, you provide vital lessons on how I can improve my paintings. Thank you for these wonderful tutorials and demonstrations! I love your paintings.
Thankyou so much Lori. I have finally found someone on youtube doing the kind of art I want to do (fine art large scale textured, layered abstract as opposed to crafting projects). About to binge the rest of your videos 😊
First and foremost, congratulations on your big move from The Big Smoke, Hogtown, Turonna! You will love country living! Just finished watching and loved this one. You have offered and given so much information to help newbies to art who are hungry to create, learn and take risks. Thank you for that. So, with that, time to paint, then beach time and cerveza! Watching and waiting for the next installment here in beautiful Cozumel Mexico!
Aww thank you so much Jackie, really glad you enjoyed this one. Someone how knowing you are watching them from Mexico makes me feel a little like I'm on vacation there too. I have a good imagination 😂😂😂
Such a fantastic video Lori. I'm just starting to paint abstracts purely for my own enjoyment to get a break from drawing portraits and this is so helpful to me as I've absolutely no idea what I'm doing 😃
Congrats on your move Lori! Country living will surely bring out even more "Layers" in your work ;) Perhaps some abstract landscapes are in your future. I love watching all of your videos, they are so inspiring and rich with content. Looking forward to seeing around your new studio space and maybe even a little outside tour of your new spot if you're planning it. All the best on your new chapter of your painting journey
Thanks Carol i really am loving it out here. It's so beautiful and there is always something fun to do outside. Yesss for sure I'll be giving a tour soon !!!
I would love to see Part 2 (and 3 and 4 - whatever it takes, but bite-size pieces like this) of this video where you take this painting to the next level, and continue on this theme of layering! This is just what I cane to your channel for today! Thank you. You always provide what I need...mind reader!
Love it Lori! Congrats on the move…can’t wait to hear what you’re going to be doing. Hoping it includes art retreats on the farm. I’d be happy to make the trek from So. California to paint with you!!
Thank you so much for making an effort and sharing your knowledge Lori! You have inspired me on several occasions during my process of trying to incorporate painting as a medium for my mental health. Appreciate your work!!
Thank you Lori! I’ve been having fun incorporating more marks into my art over the past year. I love watching people move right in close to my paintings/or run their hand over an area to try and read something scribbled or scraped into the paint. It always makes me smile as my marks are usually random letters and symbols but they often come up with a word or phrase that they think it says. Congrats on your move - it looks lovely! We moved to a small town over covid as well. Challenging for sure with things the way they are currently. You must be so relieved that’s behind you. I love the Ottawa area. I always find it has so many great museums and cool things to do yet it has a more relaxed, small town feel compared to TO. And…the best part is that you’re now so close to Beaver Tails!! So yummy! What could be better than an art retreat weekend and Beaver Tails?! Lol!
Hahaha Sally lol I ate my face off for the last 6 months. no beaver tails for me for at least a year....But art retreats could be a real thing soon as next year. 😉
Great tutorial thank you. With layers. Do you have to know what’s opaque and what is transparent or does that not matter? Is the white that you are using opaque or transparent?
Lori, you look like you're having too much fun painting. You make it look like play instead of work. I stopped painting during the pandemic. Trouble focusing. I know that many artists were busy creating during the lockdown. I was not one of them. Your video helps me remember how much I enjoy creating new art work. My biggest challenge is the technical part of marketing/selling my work on line. I'm determined to figure it out. Grants are good, but sometimes difficult to receive.Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I've taken oil painting classes for many years. My teacher was an art teacher who is now retired. She is wonderful. This brought all those years of information full circle. I love contrast, my teacher creates photo like oil paintings (which is proving to be beneficial information) I'm so glad to see it all finally clicking. Thanks so much for this great tutorial!
Ok, I really needed this at this moment. I took an abstract painting (one of my first) from my sketchbook to a larger canvas and was getting frustrated I couldn't come close to the sketchbook background. Here's the answer - layers! Just needed a reminder the first layer doesn't have to look good, there will be more
Thank you. Just saw your video and I wanted to say thanks for the tips. I have never tried this with only one color…Can’t wait….I’m really trying to work on my values and composition. Thank you….
Thanks for sharing. I found this exercise so helpful into retuning my painting , I became stuck but this exercise really helped me to get back on track , thank you
Yaaaay, I don't have to spend a lot of money on a zillion colors to start. Love your work. Just found you and looking forward to bingewatching everything you do. Hope you do something like this and add on every week.
A good tip for abstract painting is . Use paper . Then if you really like one particular area of the painting. You can just cut it out and mount it on a board or canvas and throw away the rest of the original.
Why did you choose to live near Ottawa? 🤔 I'm very curious, because I live near Ottawa too (in Gatineau). I've always thought, that Toronto has more art interests and vibrant culture, vs boring government city with dull grumpy fat folks with no sense of artistic taste. Perhaps, I've underestimated my region? What are your thoughts? Love your style! ❤
Haha I certainly didn’t move here to further my art career. I choose Ottawa or more so Almonte because my sister and husband have a 200 hundred acre farm with two large homes. I moved into one and now I get to have a dog that gets to run free and I now own a horse. He’ll be coming home here in the fall. Soooo I miss Toronto but playing on a farm for a while is a nice distraction. I still own my condo there so the option to move back in the future is there when I’m farmed out.
