CREATING LONG TERM FOOD STORAGE for a large family | REDUCING ELECTRICITY BILLS
Chatting about how we've managed to dramatically reduce our electricity bills, how we're saving money on fuel and how we are creating some long-term food storage in case of emergencies. It's always good to be somewhat prepared, especially when you have many people dependent on you.

Yay! I'm so glad that I'm not the only one obsessed with food storage. My eldest daughter thinks I'm going mad. She keeps asking " how much rice and tinned fish do we need? "

🤣 She’ll understand soon enough when the shtf!! I took a whole box of sardines off the shelf in Aldi today and bought the lot 😆 Food is going to be a lot more valuable than money or gold.

There is nothing wrong with being prepared. It's a smart thing to do. Things are insane right now.

So I moved to Turkey at 20 and many people here are still very self-sufficient. I’m not sure why this option isn’t as popular in the US or UK but people here dehydrate a lot of foods just by laying them out in a layer on a sheet on their balcony or in their garden and it dries up and lasts a long time. They do this with peppers, zucchini, herbal tea leaves, apples, plums, pears, tomatoes, mushrooms and more. Maybe you can give it a try? It’s very cost-efficient as you can imagine- no electricity required!

Oh, and we share the same sentiments on the freeze drier. It would be wonderful to have. I settled on a regular dehydration system too.

I'm so sad to hear about the electric bill you are now hit with. I've been thinking of you and will be praying for your family. I can't imagine the hot water situation. You are amazing, Friend.

And as for price rises i honestly haven't noticed much. Our power is basically free from solar panels and we bought all the propane gas for the year for our cooker before the increase. We have chickens and a lot of our food is either grown or already been preserved from the year before. The fuel prices are quite bad at the minute but since we don't have much of other expenses it's not that bad. I can see why it's so stressful for everyone else though and i hope they either lower the prices or at least do something to make it more affordable, because how the heck are people meant to pay for all of that and feed themselves

Yes, food prices and gas prices are outrageous here in the USA. I have also looked many times at those freeze driers, but they are so very expensive, that will have to be far in the future. For now we’ve just bought some pre-made freeze dried meals for preparedness, it is crazy that they can last 25 years with what seems like very minimal nutrient loss compared to canning. It’s really amazing. I enjoyed seeing your food prep :)

Alex, we are in a 3 bedroom detached in Lancashire and we pay £68 a month gas and electric with Utility Warehouse. You only pay what you use. xxx Ben Fogel is one of their customers.

They do mobile phone contracts too. You go online and sign up for that and then if you don’t want to carry on with the phone contract you can cancel.

I find canning pretty fun to do and good for long term food storage. It's a bit of an investment with the pressure canner (has to be a canner, not a cooker) but i think they're worth it! Lots of cool recipes you can try out. Dont worry about the nutrient loss it's not as big as you think

Yes, we are seeing unbelievable food and gas prices here in the states, too. And I’m thinking about how to look ahead and prepare for whatever may come. We’ve also got a garden, but have had very little rain, so things are struggling. I’m trying to stock up on staples at the store, and perhaps buy in bulk where I can. However, I haven’t been sure how to store everything once I’ve got it. I didn’t realize that dehydrated food is actually more nutritious than canned, and it takes up less space. I’d love to have a dehydrator, but that might need to be an item for my wish list. I wonder if an oven could work just as well?
@largefamilymama
@largefamilymama 2 года назад
I believe you can you your oven if it stays at a low enough temperature, the only problem is that you then can’t use the oven to cook your meals as it takes so many hours to dehydrate but maybe you could work round it by dehydrating at night so the oven is free to use during the day.
@Mrssupermumm
@Mrssupermumm 2 года назад
What a great video. That dehydrater works wonders. I bave been stockpiling food and water we are growing veg and doing as much as poss to reduce electricity usage. Dehydrated seems great though as like you say, once its dried you don't need anything extra power to help store it. Well done Alex x
@largefamilymama
@largefamilymama 2 года назад
I think it’s a wise move to be stockpiling, things have been pretty crazy with the government the last few years and I think that was just a warm up for the chaos that’s about to descend.

I'm Mama of a home educating family of 10 and am thinking and doing along the same lines as you. I never thought I'd need one but now I'd love a dehydrator. I'm looking into solar powered battery packs like Bluetti as something to take over some of our energy needs and maybe even take on most of them. We're with Octopus and are paying £250 a month for gas & electricity, anticipating a hike in October. If we owned our own home I'd definitely get a woodstove installed, grow our own food and get solar panels installed for starters. I can't see things improving any time soon. We are in this for the long haul and need to prepare our families accordingly.
@largefamilymama
@largefamilymama 2 года назад
I haven’t heard of those battery packs before, I’ll have a look at those. I would also love a wood burning stove but we rent so that can’t happen, although I was thinking of getting something like that for the garden 🤔

Can I be honest ((I WANT TO HIDE UNDER MY ROCK)) We are seeing the increases now here in Wales but to be fair we've always had higher prices where we live. Our fuel is over £2 which is stinging our bank account. Our household energy prices...well again I have simply stopped my DD and paying what I was before and I am refusing to pay any more than we can afford. James works and earns a modest wage yet we are now stuggling and it's so depressing!! We don't just have food price increases but shortages and everytime we go shopping the shelves are looking bleak. I am prepping and stocking going at it hardcore now with every spare penny going on reserves and energy. We can do this

@LifeofWildRoots
@LifeofWildRoots 2 года назад
@@Mrssupermumm They haven't said very much if I'm honest, it's simply a case of I'm paying what I can :) Our DD was £220 they then wanted £370 I said NO!! We only use £144 according to our smart meter. Our gas they wanted £95 a month yet it's summer and never used. No debts on the accounts! We are with SSE and we've had NOTHING but trouble the last 5 years. I now pay £200 and £60 because it's all our budget will allow. With 10 mouths to feed, a disabled child and hospital trips which is sucking us dry...its just tough 🤣 As long as your agreeing to pay and are paying they cannot do anything xx

@@LifeofWildRoots thank you so much for your reply. Mine has doubled and I'm looking at switching. I've also rejected having a smart meter but after hearing what you've said, it may be an idea to get one 🤔. We have 8 kids at home now as one has left so I understand how hard it is to feed so many lol. Good luck.

I would take a meter reading on a normal day and again 24 hours later and then I’d do the same but have a certain thing turned off and compare. For example, one of the 24 hour meter readings would be when I hadn’t used the washing machine, the other when I didn’t have the hot water switched on etc. I soon saw we used far less electricity when the hot water was off.
