In 1982 when Bladerunner was released, people hated it, critics panned it, and people didn't understand what they had seen. Its now regarded as one of greatest films of all time. Last night I saw Ghost in the shell, and it reminded me a lot of Bladerunner and not just aesthetically. The deeper more complex questions of what it means to be human and where are we heading a species. I loved it.
Saw this last night and was very impressed, was totally immersive. It's a shame it's being overlooked as it's a beautiful piece of film, much like Dredd was.
So they made an awesome bodysuit that doesn't wrinkle, slip or anything yet they completely replace it with a CGI version. Why i don't hate on CGI or anything but that does seem quite superfluous.
Loved Scar Jo in this and thought it was a great sci-fi action flick. I don't really compare it to the anime because the anime is good for its reasons and the live action movie is good for other reasons, mainly Scar Jo.
Like from original jurassic park t rex was so real cgi and that tree that he broke was also cgi that was so realistic and jurassic world looks so fake pc crap
A RU-vidr called That Japanese Man Yuta interviewed japanese people if they cared about who played the character. Can you guess what they said? They didn't give a fuck as long as she's a good actor.
Random Japanese on the street are not automatically anime Fans or experts. Someone who doesn't give a fuck about the original, wont give a fuck in who plays the life action version.
There's is no evidence to suggest that Motoko was ethnically an Asian as a cyborg, when people say that she was meant to play as an de facto asian, they clearly do not watch GOTS. Before anyone says she has a Japanese surname or that it's taken place in asian setting, they forget that a surname does not preclude certain ethnicity especially a cyborg shell. In addition, the place of location does not determine the ethnicity especially a setting where the futuristic location is muti-racial and culturally diverse.
@Akin Khoo- Are you deluded? clearly, you didn't read what I said Motoko is located in an ethnically and culturally diverse futuristic place; what her shell is, is irrelevant due to this, it does not matter what her shell was, given that her 'undercover' is her infiltrating through a cloak. She blends in because she has a mass produced typical face type of a common cyborg not because of her ethnicity. The layer of depth would be lost if she was simply ethnically Japanese rather than ambiguous because it goes against the running theme of transcending boundaries of what makes you human, to simply to box Motoko into a corner would be stereotypical and uninteresting. Please stop the hyperbola, it's embarrassing, we're comparing different shells, your attempt at comparing as some equivalence to "12-foot tank" is specious as I have mentioned why that is.
This adaptation of ghost in the shell was actually really fucking good IMO, I wish more people in the U.S. would've given this film a chance...although the garbage truck scene could have been better if they stayed more true to the original
i dont know, i liked it a lot better than the original. the soundtrack was incredible, there were less pointless and drawn out scenes and although they did skimp on the deeper themes they almost werent needed since the film kept up a good pace the whole way through. Now that being said i would be estatic if they did expend on the themes in another film :P
oh dont get me wrong i like slow paced movies, but 1995 just wasnt done right for me, i guess because it was an anime and its harder to convey subtle emotions and they kinda stayed with the same 3-4 frames for while scenes, like the one where the whole political standpoint of being a downloaded person inside a fully robitic body was argued with section 6 and the hacker. I think i might appreciate SaC a bit more.
Of all the scenes they took from 95 or SAC, I felt like the truck chase and the water fight felt too forced for me. That and showing Batou getting his eyes is completely unnecessary.
The production design of this movie was beyond impressive, they really captured every detail of the world of GitS, but the history, even though it wasn't inherently bad (neither the performances), it couldn't save the movie as a 6/10 IMO.
Suit was still a bit off I think. It looked out of place but oh well. I think the movie would have benefited from having an R ratting as well. Could have taken the more darker elements a bit further. I don't have a problem with Scarlett being cast. But for christ sakes get a decent f****** script. The cinematography however was pretty stellar. But the ending should have been avoided as WTF. Sanders made himself look like hypocrite. Overall considering this could have been one of the best films of the year. I think the ball was dropped pretty much from it's Inception. Hopefully Battle Angel comes out better fingers crossed.
Check out the Rurouni Kenshin live-actions through Netflix (dvd only, 3 movies) they are supposed to be well done. I'm gonna be watching the first one tonight.
Great stuff. You know, I'd love to see a review by someone NOT already in love with the original (or following the nerd-dogma of its superiority). Possible?
Why do people hat it when there's lots of CGI in an action movie? Sometimes it's done so well it looks 100% real, yet people just complain. This movie was amazing.
visually it was amazing. but the story was bullcrap. a dumbed down bourne identity. when you have the source material that is a masterpiece. the script is a crime against art.
NoJusticeNoPeace white washing has nothing to do with the screenplay. they just dumbed down the source material to appeal to a wider audience. such a shame since the visuals are fantastic.
Whitewashing is Not a racist term. From Wikipedia: Whitewash, or calcimine, kalsomine, calsomine, or lime paint is a low-cost type of paint made from slaked lime (calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2) and chalk (calcium carbonate, (CaCO3), sometimes known as "whiting". Various other additives are also used. It resembles milky white water, hence the name White Wash. It also rubs off on your clothes if you sit or rub against it. No need to keep perpetuating this "racist" myth. Just because a term references color, does not always mean it's racist.
WETA's practical effects were so good, really works of art, (up there with the best Sam Winston creature effects), it's a real shame the filmmakers chose to replace most of them with fully CG effects. Not cool, guys. Not cool.
I watched the anime a few yrs ago and I thought the movie was gonna suck, I don't like Scarlett Johanseen much either but actually her performance was pretty good and so was the movie, totally recommended.
When i watch this kind of stuff, i realize that i'm still a NOOB with the CGI, no matter if i've achieved photorealism, i feel tiny against this, lol. BTW, i use Blender, and yeah, it's as good as the big 3 (Maya, Cinema 4D and Autodesk3D)
It's interesting that the video is about the special effects in general, but the title only mentions the body suit part because that's what gets the views. A bit of a clickbait in a way
That "Sologram" concept doesn't makes much sense since a real hologram is actually a gathering or capture of an entire light field, being display as a tridimensional image.
The movie wasn't bad, it was just ok. The philosophical themes the original 95 anime wanted to present to its audience weren't given as much attention as they should have, the movie ended up with a lot of problems and some very awkward decisions in terms of its story and what it wanted to say. This confusion will only end up hurting the audience's expectations of the film. Visually the movie did look pretty good, but Im sad to hear close to 90% of all effects ended up being digital.
this movie is awesome.. and I'm a huge fan of the original anime. they did the anime justice, super well done, not to mention Scarlett Johansson is absolutely the sexiest motherfucker on the face of the planet earth. and she nailed the role of the major.
If anime is a 10 then this is a solid 8.Im only sad because they didnt use practial effects as much,or layered CGI over them so they lost its charm . . . I miss the good ole 80's flicks, like Aliens,Bladerunner,The Thing etc . . . where the production teams brought the terrors to real life using pupets, costumes and make up,rather than using CG for some lame effect.
Nobody wants to talk about her role, her acting, what it was like for her... they only want to talk about her appearance. If she were male, this would not be happening.
It always frustrates me when I see this much skill and effort put into the technical side of films that are nowhere near that quality in writing or acting.
I don't get the obsession with ScarJo's bodysuit. It's a body suit. And I don't get why this movie is being talked about as some kind of CG breakthrough, because it's really not.
honestly the live action movie made me love Ghost in the Shell more, the story is made simpler for people who dont or for those who have no plans in watching the anime, the "white washing" as they call it made sense to the story, based on my observation since I live in Asia, there is a great obsession of western media in asia, so its obvious that "Shells" that will be made would appear to have a western physique, plus future nations wont have pure races in the far future, everything would be mixed af
"Is this a CGI cartoon?" the exact thing my buddy said to me while watching the opening scene of this movie. So don't give me this "so realistic" bullshit. If you film everything with practical effects, here's a tip: USE THE FOOTAGE INSTEAD OF REPLACING IT ALL WITH SHINY CGI.
