Creating The Rear Door Flange For My Custom 1930 Ford Model A Roadster Doors

In the last update on the 1931 Ford Sweetheart Roadster, Matt installed a Model T door latch mechanism and got the door latching. Today Matt is going to work on creating the rear flange of the door that overlaps the body. The flange follows the contour of the body, so we will need to use the bead roller with a tipping die. Matt and Jay work on tipping the flange and also shrinking when necessary to help gather the excess metal. The last hurdle is the large body line on the top of the Model A Body which cannot be done in the bead roller. Matt uses his pipe anvil and large brake to recreate the shape beautifully!! Let us know in the comments down below if you enjoy these types of videos!!

No complaints from me Matt. I’m a retired, 40+ year, old school panel beater (tin basher), hot rodder from the U.K. and it’s great to see a younger generation keeping the old ways alive. We didn’t have shrinking or stretching equipment, or TIG welders, it was all done with hammers, dollies, spoons, flippers, sandbags and oxyacetylene. Not forgetting wet asbestos for keeping the heat dispersion of the metal controlled, couldn’t get away with the latter now !! Really looking forward to seeing the next episode. Thanks for sharing from the U.K. 👍.

The "details" are very important and something we all need to understand as we learn how to do this work so please DO continue to show and elaborate. The one thing I thought wasn't entirely clear in your explanation was that while doing the welding (adding the tach), it shrinks the metal so the gap closes further along the seem. Hammering the tach, effectively "stretches" that shrink so the metal goes back to its original shape. Other than all the penetration, and strength issues associated with welding, anticipating and dealing with all the "heat" related reactions of the welding is the next hardest thing to learn and overcome. Thanks for providing the knowledge !!! 👍👍👍
