Some words about history, manufacturing, and tuning of RAV Drum from Perm TV channel. This video is in Russian, but we promise to add English subtitles soon!
Some years ago Andrey Remyannikov invented a whole new kind of instrument - RAV Drum. And people loved RAV. It was the first steel tongue drum to possess a total of four partials per tongue.

How much do these cost roughly? I can't find anything on the website, unless I email them directly for an order.

They cost around $700 with soft case when I purchased.

What is the name of the tool they are using to make the metal dome halfs

It's a metal spinning shaper/former. You use the roller on the pressing arm to press the metal as it spins against the shape you wish to achieve. It is a highly repeatable process and makes short work as you saw out of creating a bowl.

Tell him he is doing a great job, I think he is almost like the person who created the stradivarius violins but instead these drums. I am thinking of buying one which will be shipped to Boston. I am a guitar player of about 40 years but really interested in these drums

Oh it's a lovely story. Andrey worked as an engineer and wanted to purchase a Hang Drum, which are very pricey and hard to find. So instead of chasing it, he decided to create his own instrument. For three years, he experimented with the sound, size, form and materials. After 15 different versions of drums he finally achieved the one we manufacture and sell now🙂

Why does it have such a small sound hole l!!??!! How should I stick magnets in there??? It could be the perfect steel drum if the sound hole were a little bigger. such a waste...

To change the pitch of the tongues (otherwise you'll be stuck with only 3 or 4 useful scales per drum so you won't be able to use it in many songs...)

WildVideos There are tuneable tongue drums but personally I don't see it as a problem that this one isn't there are tons of songs that fit the scales available especially if you buy the one in major. Personally I don't like the sound of the tuneable ones I've seen as much.

Well, it's a problem unless you buy at least 6 drums (even than you won't be be able to carry them all to gigs) or unless it's only for solo playing (but I guess you"ll get bored eventually and you"ll want some new scales). As a singer/ music producer there's no way I can bind myself to a specific scale and I'm not rich enough to buy a new drum every time I need a different scale. BTW I also think these drums sound much better than other steel tongue drums, that's why I said it's such a waste. It could be the ultimate steel drum if it was tunable.

WildVideos Maybe the fact that it's they're tuneable that takes away from the sound? You don't need to bind yourself to a scale unless you're planning to use it in every song right? Even then simply playing in a different key should work sometimes? It's still a percussive instrument and probably not meant to carry the melody (even if that would be cool). I don't know, i still don't see it as a huge hinder but whatever.
