I am "horrible" at making reviews. But have been getting a lot of questions lately, regarding what and which to buy. So I thought I ll make a video - uncut, unedited, no effects video - to describe the difference (& sound quality) between these drums, The 1st picture : mic placement was to show the distance btwn the drum(s) and the mics/recorder(Tascam DR40) for this video.
Sonic quality or sound projection- to me- is important to the player.(extremely important to me)
Personal use/meditation etc- maybe not so.
I find the bigger drums has better projection(loudness) and personally perfect for my practice, which is vibration healing.
You can always amplify these drums by miking them/connecting to amplifier, if needed- but that's a difference topic.
This video includes some of the drums I own.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Have a blessed day!

Wow this brings back memories. The first tongue drum I ever bought for myself was a Hapi drum slim , back in around 2012 ish. I'm now mainly a handpan player but I would lie if I said that this video didnt make me blow the dust off my old drum and play with it for a bit.

Hellllooo!!!!! OKOK...I demand you to dust off the HAPI drum! hahaha! I still have 2 Hapi drums in my collection. Is the one you got there the tunable HAPI? I have one tunable HAPI and the o0ther one is NOT---but they are real steel- so said, you can tune them with magnets like I did mine! OK.......wipe off the dust of the HAPI. Give it a good cleaning and BANG away!!!! oh yea....I got my magnets from Harbor Freight....under $10 bucks! Have a great day!

@maxandchloemeditation
@maxandchloemeditation Год назад
My daughter is 8 now. I have been using these drums to put her to sleep since she was a baby. She started “playing” with them as a toddler. Her “first” drum was an 8 note 10”. Sounds are very therapeutic. Some see these as colors. While some hear them as different pitches.I chose the 8 notes for her as its the least complicated-plus its only for the “sounds”. The lesser notes and bigger tongues made it easier for her to hit the notes. If yours are 6 now…I ll say got with a 12” 13 and up notes. More notes will allow her to “learn to play” songs. I use these drums to teach kids meditation as well.

The nova drum sounds incredible! It’s the best one by far!! Such a pure tone even with fingers, it may not be the best tone over all but it softens the finger hits so you don’t get the steel rattle and all you seem to hear in only the tone which makes it sound better
@maxandchloemeditation
@maxandchloemeditation 14 дней назад
GM! You are 100% correct! Personally, I hesitated getting the NovaDrum because of the "size" UNTIL I played one! I was shocked....literally by the size and the sounds! Great harmonics.....excellent playability....and compact! I kinda, have to disagree with you on the sounds- I think that the Nova is perfect. It can definitely hold its weight in compare to the "big boys". The Nova has its own unique sounds. Maybe NOT as bright - which I prefer sometimes. To me, it is between the Rav, Art Quint meets Pulsar- then raised by Guda.

3:25 thx for letting us know how u currently feel abt it. I wouldn't consider 10in small tho. At least not for my small hands😂 4:43 true 6:41 That is a beautiful drum. Kudos to you for supporting that artist. They did a great job. We can be really resourceful when we put our minds to it. I didn't know you could use propane tanks to make an instrument. Thats pretty cool. ❤. I do kind of feel bad for buying a random one of these off of Amazon. But it was on sale and I tried the Kalimba and I did not have the nails for it. So I just want an instrument that isn't going to damage my hands, that I'm going to ACTUALLY play. So I don't want to spend too much if it ends up collecting dust😢.
@maxandchloemeditation
@maxandchloemeditation 4 месяца назад
1- the 10" is actually a good size - mine has 8 notes- which is PERFECT for the size. It's perfect for personal meditation purpose. 2- I like Kalimbas. Actually, have 2 that I play with my daughter every now and then. All said, when it comes down to these drums- buy it/them to your budget. There is no right, nor wrong. As long as you are happy with it. Simply said, enjoy them. Have a blessed day.

Love the info in this video about all the shapes and styles of tank drums … however, I had to cringe each time you struck a note on the drums, as I have severe carpel tunnel syndrome and arthritis in both hands … my thumbs hurt way too much to play my drums with anything other than certain mallets. Thank you Max for taking the time to teach about the drums. I finally have a decent 15-note tank drum and I love it, but I prefer the Timber brand mallets for tank drums, with the soft rubber ball on the ends.

Thank you so much for the kind words. My mother in law ,,,simply said- she loves playing my drum every time she comes over. She "don't want one" but only want to play them when she is here. So I got her mallets as well. I actually did a video on mallets a while back. Now back to mallets- there are so many options. Different mallets produces "different sounds'. Have you tried other mallets beside the one you have? My in-law loves the wool covered ones as they produced softer and gentler tones. ---- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f0kQHXZOVfc.html

A very nice overview, thanks.. I had to stop drumming, but I find my hands will not stop moving. This is a great escape. I just started with a tiny cheapo aliexpress tongue drum, like you say, to check it out. It is very addictive. The quality of these mass produce instruments surprised me: it is really neatly tuned! It plays 'heavy' and has little sustain, but it doesn't sound 'bad' like I kinda expected. So thanks for the info - I may want to upgrade soon, this video is a great help, and no you are not bad at this, you are very natural, I like that. Cheers!

Thank you. My principle of life is very simple. Enjoy what you do. Either with these drums….etc…..do and play what makes you happy. What makes you smile. And that smile…ear to ear….that ‘s the most important thing. The gift of joy. Doesn’t matter if it’s a $50 drum or a $3000 drum. Exactly just that, not what Or how much……enjoy your blessings, my friend.

There is a bit of confusion in the definitions in the video. The first two instruments being shown are Steel Tongue Drums, they are also called Tank Drums, while they can be played with the fingers but they are better sounding when you play them more with mallets. The one at time mark 6:00, is a "steel tongue pan" it is a hybrid of steel tongue drum/tank drum but more flat and played more with just the hands. There is a few more of these flatter looking "steel tongue pans" after the thicker green/blue "happy" tank drum. Then at the end of the video at time mark 16:15 that is hand pan drum. There is a lot of people out there that do videos and get the names mixed up. Many of the larger drums are WAY overpriced, and the 10 inch size is a good one to get about $50.00 USD or lower, almost certainly Chinese made. You'll find the many Chinese (over) mass produced steel tongue/tank drums out there which is good as you can find those for lower prices. But make no mistake the steel tongue drum is based on the wooden slit drum, and it is not based from China but by many older civilizations such as the Aztecs, and Indonesians.
@maxandchloemeditation
@maxandchloemeditation Год назад
well, my friend. you are 100% right. There is NO set terminology for these instruments- except- Handpan(even that is debatable per HANG/PanArt-UFO,Pantam etc) & Steel Tongue drum. Basically, all...ALL can be classified as STEEL Tongue Drum(except the "handpan"). These definitions were coined by various makers to differentiate the instruments- making it easier for people to identify them. Tonguepan were coined because of their size- similar to handpan. Tank drum - because they were MADE from 2 halves of propane tank. Tongue drum are usually used for generic- off the shelves steel tongue drum(but NOT handpan size-). So all said- Its really for identifying purposes, but each has a history of why.If you search for tonguepan- you will get Rav,Art Quint,Pulsar,Eox,Orion etc showing up. If you search for Tank Drum, you will those(Bubbhatankdrum,DreamDrums etc) and tongue drum- you will see mostly massed produce drums. All said, there is NO set, defined terminology, just labels created to...again...identify each drum. Playing with hands or mallets are subjective...and also based on the drums(sizes). I find playing with fingers- you can control the emotions of the sounds(loudness, resonance and tonality) I use both mallets and hand depending on my classes/sessions. Massed produced drums are usually made with/by the same mold, hence 1-2 scale availability- but sold by many companies with their own branding. They are usually single tone/pitch. Better drums(tonguespans) usually comes in multiple scales and tuning(440hz/432hz). Each tongue can produce up to 8 harmonies/overtones(like a thick chord)- just like the handpan where the player can add/mute a third, fifth etc)- allowing more expressions during their playing. Material used- this is a very interesting topic- most better drum makers will use hardened steel and will choose one with better metal/steel consistency Massed produced- usually use any metal(steel/copper/alloy steel etc). All in all....no matter what, which and why- as long as the owner is happy with their drum(s)...and the sounds- the magic is done! Enjoy the magic of these drums- Have a blessed day!

@@maxandchloemeditation I started like you with little tongue drums first, then I got a clanging bigger one I don't care for, then a big 14 tone dish shape in c, and now I have a d & c key 15 note dish drums. I like the sound of the dish shape drums. But all the bigger ones I got were on sale no more than 100. 00. I also have 5 different kalimbas, a quena flute in G from etsy, finger cymbals, bongo, a digereedoo, travel size cajon drum, spoons percussion instrument, various singing bowls, and a set of harmonicas in every key. Lol I would love to say I've mastered any one of these instruments, even just a little. I like to play and these are my toys. My grandkids and I explore these together. I've decided to save niw for a big tank drum. It's going to take a long time but that's ok.

Hey dude! This just crossed my screen … thought I’d pop in an say hi! 👍🏼 Good review!! The only thing I’d add is that while money DOES matter, and you DO get what you pay for, “play before you pay’ is always best! Whether it’s a tongue drum or a Handpan, you definitely want something that’ll resonate with you. And YES…..individual makers pans are always nicer than the mass produced pans….no question!! Your Hapi drum was my favorite of the smaller ones. Nova drum sounded just lovely….but I loved the RAV. I’ve got the B Celtic Double Ding. I haven’t had the opportunity yet to tap on a Quint Art but it sounded very nice….BUT…..of course….for me, if having to choose one, handpans will always win!! 😆 Ok dude … time to get up and get movin’…… till next time…take care…. 🤗🛸🎶🦋

heeeeeellllllooooooooooo!!! I agree....you do get what you pay for. Thats the hardest part about doing this video! I have a non profit that I teaches kids-drumming(with my hidden agenda- Meditation). All said, a lot- so many people wanted/would love to own these wonderful instruments but many can't afford it. Thats what prompted me to make the video. And to differentiate the different terminologies associated with these drums. Most inexpensive drums(Amazon etc) usually come in 1-2 scales- C Major being the common standard(massed produced).

Thanks for this video. I can recommend to check out the used market if you can find a trustworthy seller it’s a good opportunity to get a better instrument for less money. Good as a first instrument. When you play the cheap drums with good mallets which come with more expensive drums you might be surprised what sound you can get out of the cheaper drums. Also I learned to put them on a stand what helps with the open sound hole on the bottom. If you like the steel drums make good research and better safe money for a good drum. It’s important to know what sound and sustain you want from your drum. Here I see the great variety from the custom made drums. Because all is preference. Some like the ringing metal sound, for others that’s exactly what they don’t like and prefer maybe more wooden like sound. There are some main categories of steel drums: 1. Steel tongue drum (mostly metallic sound) 2. Steel tongue pan (from metallic to warm woody sounding, great variety) 3. Hand pan (specific sound to hand pans) Next to consider is the musical scale of the instrument. There are a lot of scales which sound exotic, others are more versatile with a western music scale or pentatonic scale. My tip, watch as many videos as you can. If you have the chance to try these instruments in a local store or a friend has one it’s a good opportunity. A brand I personally like is Kosmosky located in Russia. They have steel tongue drums in the price range 200-500 USD. Quint Art steel drum pan are amazing and my favourite for now. Other great makers are: RAV Vast, Eox Drum (orion drum) Kaa Tone, YW Yudin Workshop, Nova drum and many more.

GM! These Amazon sellers comes and go. But all honesty- these tongue drums are usually manufactured by the same few factories in China. The main thing is quality control. Always buy only from Amazon Prime sellers- if the quality is "off" - you can return it without any hassle(Prime sellers). Try to get at least 10" and up. Smaller drums are good but they are not going to have enough tongues and the sounds are going to be tinny. Bigger drum(s) will have bigger tongues, which translate to better resonance & projections. More tongues(minimum 11 but 13-15 is best) will allow you more notes- 2 octaves or so. Giving you more "options" on/with songs. Lomuty is fine....Have a great day.

Im considering buying one and could take some tips with playing it, percussive, meditative or music in general. I was thinking of getting a xylophone, but I may get one of these drums bc of its resonance, tuning ability of some and use for meditation, relaxation, concentration or record or listen to others just as background music or soundtracks to vid uses too. I look fwd to seeing more of yr vids and perhaps the dog and cat at the end of yr future vids?

Get what you can afford, but i recommend checking out any videos or samples just to make sure the notes are in tune. My favorite so far are rav vast for tone, kosmosky for tone as well in a more tank drum style, and yw pulsar for balance of tone and number of notes. I have videos of the rav and pulsar on my channel. hopefully i'll post more soon. kosmosky is more affordable than the other two and compact, so highly recommend that for an advanced beginner (a musician looking for a drum)

Well said, Sean. "get what you can afford" Of course, we all want the more expensive, better drums.....who doesn't, right? I treat all my drums as individual instruments. Each has their own tonality and each with their own personality. Thats the beauty of these.I haven't tried the new Kosmosky yet- the one with harmonics and overtones. I am at the point that I am selling off some drums to "make" room for more hahahahaha! So said, I am down to 26 from almost 40.

Unfortunately I dont. I offered them to the local kids through my non profit- Project Children United. I dont consider myself a great tongue drum player. I use these tongue drums to teach kids the fundamental of music, rhythm and motor skills- but my "hidden agenda" behind my classes are really to teach them meditation. Through sounds and breathing. the sounds of these drums really calmed them down a lot. Teach them how to breathe btwn notes....of course, I try to make it fun at the end of the classes* FREE PLAY*----which 99% of the time....I ll be leaving the class with headaches(10 plus kids banging away)...BUT always with a smile.

I loved your video. Thankyou for your great advice. I am a novice looking to buy my first drum. Im after a deeper/lower toned drum that is for personal relaxation and meditation purposes. I dont want to play 'songs' by artists as such so no specific scales or chords. I think the word is diatonic? I want to be able to hit any tongues to get a nice long sustain in low tones with zero music background by me. Something I can pick up and play for positive mind set. Ive heard 432hz is best for this. Im in Australia and have a budget of about $200. What do you suggest? Thankyou in advance for your help and advice 😊
@maxandchloemeditation
@maxandchloemeditation 8 месяцев назад
Hi there down under! Both of my brothers graduated from universities there.I am in the states. Anyway.....Most artisan drums will be over $200.I don't see much options on Amazon.Au. on tongue drums except the few Chinese made tongue drums - which are mostly in the scale/tune of C. I wouldn't worry so much about frequencies- 432 vs 440. Honestly.......they are just selling gimmicks. Yes with 440 - its easier and has the ability to play with other instruments(guitars etc). 432 will sound a bit "off" when played with 440 instruments. I call 432 a gimmick because to "get the properties" or for the "frequencies" to work- it has to be a continuous drone.Most people won't get the "healing properties"unless the person is super in tune or in alignment already. Other than that, Its just another selling point for most. now back to the limited selection on Amazon....and if you must- Get the biggest drum you can get: like this (www.amazon.com.au/ORORA-Steel-Tongue-Drum-Notes/dp/B0BHTL57Z2/ref=sr_1_16?keywords=tongue+drum&qid=1696641612&sr=8-16 ). let me know what or which you decide to get.
