Let's look at some creative, useful, and practical smart home automations you can do with contact sensors. I'm using the VOCOlinc VS1 Contact Sensor, but the concepts work with any contact sensor/assistant.

Here’s an idea for the “too many dog treats” warning. You could use the Data Jar app to store a number variable which will count the number of times your dog treat sensor has opened. Set up an automation to run when the sensor opens. The automation would add 1 to the count (using a calculate action) and then check if the count value is greater than your maximum number of daily treats. If it is, do whatever it is you want to do in that case. Set a personal automation to run daily at midnight and set the variable back to 0.

Nice video Adam! Great tip about putting the adhesive on the battery cover, that makes it much easier to replace the battery!

Amazing video! Really liked all the ideas and especially liked how you explained the way you got Siri to make custom announcements. This is something I have been looking for for a while now and no other person seemed to be able to answer the question. Thanks 👍🏼 I’ve now subscribed 🔔

If you install Homebridge, you can use the homebridge-logic plugin with its index counter and a dummy plug (or just add the contact sensor to homebridge) to keep track of how many times you’ve opened your dog treat jar.

It's not. It's Bluetooth.
@fgegner

So if it’s Bluetooth, how does the signal reach the hub if it’s so far away? Don’t want to blow money if 50 feet is too far away. Thanks.
@Rob87
@Rob87 3 года назад
Sorry but they are bluetooth, and not sure how you got yours to reach the mailbox my vocolincs drop signal from my Appletv (homehub) being 15ft away on the doors I have them mounted on all the time. They only work when you are close to them because then they piggy back off your phones bluetooth to connect to Homekit. I picked mine up super cheap at Bestbuy but might have to return as they are not preforming the way I would like.

It does vary based on mailbox type, any barriers in the way, and other factors. Every house is different. Thanks for watching! 😊

I’d probably go with Thread sensors from Eve if you are in the Homekit ecosystem or better yet, from Amazon Sidewalk, since their IoT mesh could potentially be more reliable with the help of neighbor’s Echo devices. This video just gave me that idea, so it earned a thumbs up!

You can give her access to your HomeKit home to get alerts or download the VOCOlinc app and sign in with your account in the wife’s phone. Thanks for watching! 😊

To avoid giving too many dog treats you could get a chalk board. Or just talk to your wife more often instead of relying on technology.
