This week I go to a local landmark The Light Pyramid to try out Infrared Photography for the first time using a ZOMEI IR720 Filter. Things don't quite go to plan, but learning from your mistakes is an important lesson to learn!
Light Pyramid (The Beacon) by Liliane Lijn (2012)
Commissioned in 2012, the Light Pyramid (also known as The Beacon) was designed by Liliane Lijn. The Light Pyramid was first lit for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on 4th June 2012 and is still lit to commemorate special local and national events. Made of steel and painted white (though in desperate need of a clean!) the Light Pyramid overlooks great views of Milton Keynes and Bedfordshire (though this view is now somewhat spoiled by the high-rise buildings going up around the park.

Usually, when you are doing IR photography, you can photograph the grass (green) and use this image for an in camera custom WB. This way, the grass will be white..

This is an extremely useful tutorial. This is what RU-vid was once known for.

I commend you for saying that was a HOW NOT TO video and that's an understatement. One: IR is a longer wavelength than visible light, so the focusing in visible light is never going to work FULL STOP! Now to the rest: In a visible light digital camera with the IR blocking filter over the sensor, and using a 720 nanometer lens filter, which still allows some of the visible spectrum through, the exposure times are MUCH higher than your 6 second option. Firstly, you acquired your exposure time in visible light at a very high ISO, and calculated exposure time in VISIBLE LIGHT at a lower ISO and based on a visible light reading. The differential in exposure is 10 stops or higher using a 720nm filter. Your grassy knoll even in that soft light should have appeared pale and nearly white, not dark as it was. Blue skies go anywhere from light red to dark red, and any green foliage, varying shades of pure white, to mid range white which of course yours did not. Using a filter on a standard camera will give you an overall redish tone to everything (requiring adjustments to WB and exposure among others in post) but that grass should not have been dark. On a bright sunny day that scene at f5.6 and an ISO of around 100 -200 would have required an exposure of about 30 seconds. At your choice of 400 in that low light and at the higher f-stop you used it would have required an exposure of at least 30 seconds or more.

I prefer black & white infrared photography over color. I have only shot digital infrared. I have not yet tried film infrared. I use 720nm or 950nm infrared filters. I use 52mm, 62mm, and 72mm infrared filters. I have never tried infrared with an SLR because it is too difficult viewing through the dark filter on the lens. I do not use infrared converted digital cameras. Cameras I have used include: Canon G11 and G15 digital compact cameras with fixed lens. Fuji X-Pro digital mirrorless with Fuji 23mm f/1.4 lens or Fuji 16mm f/1.4 lens. Leica M10 digital rangefinder with 35mm f/1.4 Zeiss Distagon lens.

Highly recommend a converted camera over a filter. Really opens up the opportunity and at as little as £150 for an old converted camera, it's almost as cheap as a high end filter 👍🔴📷

After you converted it to a DNG (was it a dng?) you’ve got normal looking colors. Can’t you just skip the step with the infrared filter and the converting to DNG, and just start with a normal picture and invert the colors?
@CharlesPalmerPhotography
@CharlesPalmerPhotography 3 года назад
Hi there, part of the issue was that the image I took didn't have enough contrast, a bright and sunny day would have been better, then the dng conversion and adjusting the white balance range would have been more useful. Hope that answers your question 👍

Really interesting watch and like the fact you were honest and admitted a mistake, we all make them but good to see you owning it. Really liked the final image too Charles

Great video Charles, very helpful. I recently bought the same zomei filter after one of my subscribers asked if it was possible to do IR photography with the FZ82 bridge camera I've featured in many of my videos - I'm up for a challenge so bought it. Some videos I watched were suggesting exposure times of 30 seconds or more but I found that when I tried that the image ended up blown out. I ended up with a 4 second exposure which worked quite well so I was please to see you ended up with a 6 second exposure as I thought I was doing something wrong. My biggest problem as a PC user was getting the DNG profile to save in the correct folder (PC users make sure your 'show hidden folders' setting is set to on!) so that Photoshop/Lightroom could load it.

Great video mate!! I love taking I photos! I use a nikon D70s with a full spectrum conversion and different filters for different wave lengths. A lot of rules of lighting are different when shooting on that spectrum and the big one is definitely to shoot on a really bright day lol. Great learning experience though! Loved the video!!!

One other thing I like to bring up with ir Photography, I generally set my white balance to custom and use the grass to set my white balance, it creates some really ghostly dreamscapes with all the greens being white lol
@CharlesPalmerPhotography
@CharlesPalmerPhotography 3 года назад
Yes, I meant to set a custom white balance and totally forgot! The fading light put me under pressure lol

Is that before or after you put the filter on ? I tried setting the WB to greeen grass with it it on and camera errored out
@drluisrosalesleon5015
@drluisrosalesleon5015 2 года назад
@@MrBillkaz after you put the filter, you point the camera to the grass, on manual focus and settings for a short exposure. Sometimes is a try and error process...
@drluisrosalesleon5015
@drluisrosalesleon5015 2 года назад
Seems to me that your IR filter is capturing more on the visible ranges of the light spectra... You need a filter with a deeper visible light cut, like the B+W 093...

@norberttolle6646

This is not a true infrared image. The exposure only comes from the secondary density of the blocking filters in front of and in the camera. The rest was bent in the PS. With proper infrared film, the grass in the foreground would appear almost snow-white. You should definitely try it.
