I'm 37 and my skin is pretty normal, sometimes with a slightly oily nose! I also have early signs of aging like fine lines/texture, as well as some sun damage and REDNESS!
I DO NOT use fake tan, but I get very tan naturally in the summer as I have olive skin. My face is often a LOT lighter than my body because I keep my face very well protected to keep my melasma under control and signs of aging at bay!

One thing for me is CONSTANT sponsorships. I unsubscribed from my favorite cleaning channel because everything she does now is an ad. It's not even cleaning anymore. I guess it boils down to being real on camera. If I can tell you're fake, I'm not watching it!

Something I would always tell my kids when they were growing up.... if you have to apologize for the same words or behavior more than once, you will have zero respect from others. And I stick by it. Repeated nastiness is so unappealing and I have no time for it. Charlotte, you are fabulous in every way. I adore you. ♥️

I unfollowed Tati during all the drama not because I thought she was personally wrong or right but because I liked her reviews and the makeup content, and I just don't care about some personal issues she was having with a teenager I neither know or care about. Watching people is your free time, I want it to be relaxing! Getting involved in constant online drama is my red line.

Well, I’m queer, so I don’t have the luxury of ignoring someone’s politics. If they choose not to take a stand I generally don’t think about it too much, but if they don’t see me as a human being and they make that clear, I’m out. And if I see other people supporting someone who thinks I’m a danger to children-yes, I’ve heard that, and yes, it’s been recent; just because it’s the same homophobic rhetoric as I heard growing up in the 90s doesn’t mean it’s gone-then I’m likely to unfollow them too. If you can “overlook” homophobia, that tells me you don’t give a plug nickel about my life. I didn’t grow up with people threatening to kill me and telling me to kill myself to line the pockets of the people who want me dead.

The political views are something that bothers me. What I mean by that is that everyone is entitled to support whatever party or candidates they choose, but I don't want them to push their views into their non-political channels. I watch political commentary channels and news channels, but I also watch beauty channels, and I don't need the 2 to meet. When that happens, I feel like there's no escape from the political drama we're suffocating under in America.

If I saw someone displaying to toxic political views, or bigoted behaviour it would absolutely affect my opinion of them and their channel. I would lose respect for someone who was showing themselves to be racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic or just generally a vile person. I couldn’t watch them anymore or if they were a brand owner, support their brand.

For me repeated patterns of behavior are a huge red flag and even if the creator films constant apologies I will lose faith in what they say, actions speak louder than words. I definitely care about the creators views on life, politics, etc and I do seek out those type of creators. I also seek out creators that are “human” in other words, dont pretend to have a pristine perfect life and are a bit more “relatable” (dont really like that term but its the best one to use i suppose)

For me, a couple of things come to mind. When the influencer is just always loving every single thing they try. Everything is just the best “thing” they’ve ever tried. Then the next item is the best thing they’ve ever tried. I’m sure it’s difficult when creators try so many different things but it makes me feel that they may not be balancing the review or suggestions. Another thing that’s happened with me recently is when someone gets really condescending with their subscribers when being defensive over comments or even repetitive questions. Yes please include information to help guide people to the info without having to answer the same question over and over, but let’s try not to let your frustration come through as condescending while doing so. That’s about it for showstoppers. Sometimes I have to unsubscribe because I have no self control and have to buy all the things....LOL.

You made so many great points! Last year, I sort of changed what I was looking for in beauty influencers. I started to feel a bit icky when I saw folks saying they only buy cruelty free cosmetics, but didn’t seem to give two cents about other things, like BLM. I don’t need anyone to be at the front of the picket line with me, but I do feel safer and more seen with influencers who at least try to be an ally. Not sure if that makes sense, but thanks for bringing this topic up!! ❤️❤️

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, beliefs, and values. I can certainly still support someone that has different beliefs than me; that’s part of accepting diversity and multiculturalism. HOWEVER, if those beliefs/values directly contradict universal human rights (hate, discrimination, racism, behaviors with malicious intent, committing or supporting crimes against humanity) then I absolutely have an issue and will no longer support the creator.

I really love when you do material like this and stuff sometimes off the makeup mark. It’s refreshing and your so passionate about things that I can feel it when you talk; also you are an amazing speaker. I would be a mess...lol. I’ve only unsubscribed from a few people in all the years from RU-vid. I have tons that I love but I don’t always get to see them or have the time to watch everyone. Cause I have my faves...like you;). I unsubscribed because of drama in the cases I have left. It is a get away in a sense and I like the feeling of getting to know the RU-vidr. Being one myself now, I understand the world of it a little more but I’m just barely got my toe in the water. Seeing a lot of paid for stuff and knowing the youtuber for a long time and then feel that there honesty or passion is gone; also sends me in another direction. In my eyes you don’t need to be too fancy or show you have all this money or drama to get people to like you. Is it entertaining? Probably. Drama is good TV so to speak so for some I’m sure it is what they need to stay relevant. In a nutshell, I follow and believe in most all the people I follow. They each have something different to bring to the table and as long as they are themselves; I will still stay subscribed;) Your awesome!!!

Oh yeah. It took me so much time and thinking to click “unsubscribe” on certain youtubers who i have been following for years. It’s because thought they inspired me in the past, their actions and the drama surrounding them give me so much anxiety and negativity and then itll be all I think about.

I unsubscribe from influencers for multiple reasons. Sometimes I just find their voices annoying after a while, or I feel they are inauthentic. I try to keep my subscriptions to a minimum, because I only have so much time to devote to watching RU-vid videos. If I learn something about a creator that goes against my core values, I am done with them full stop. After living through the last 4 years in the US, I have zero tolerance for *anyone who is racist, homophobic, etc...and that goes for family members and ‘friends’ as well. I am so glad to have found your channel recently, and really enjoy your content. I am an American, but lived in England for 2 years with my husband and my son was born there so listening to you speak is quite nostalgic. 😁

For me lately I've been unsubscribing or unfollowing people who are being irresponsible during the pandemic. I've seen creators of all scales posting photos and videos of themselves at events without masks and I just don't want to see that on my feed.

Every content creator I’m subscribed to is kind and joyful and smart. I don’t have the time or the inclination to watch creators who are snarky or mean. The only time I unsubscribe from a channel is when the content no longer provides me with information I’m interested in.

I'm really enjoying your new content. Love, love, love hearing your thoughts. For me, it's a lot more simple. For beauty channels, if someone changes their mind about a product within the same video - first don't like it, then love it at the end, that grinds my gears. Another, is lack of research for true crime videos or lack of empathy.

Very interesting video, Charlotte! For me, it is mostly about the sudden shift in content. I am not a fan of vlogs, but unfortunately I see that many of the RU-vidrs I watch have been actually making more vlogs than their usual make-up related content. I am ok with watching a vlog every one in a while, but I am getting seriously bored of people showing me their workout routine or what they are having for lunch. Plus, one can tell that they are doing it because they are sponsored by Hello Fresh or whatever food preparation/delivery service there is around. I also find it extremely weird for example when a RU-vidr who is always reviewing luxury and expensive makeup and is clearly living a luxurious life, suddenly does a video on affordable products that one can find at the drugstore. Is it to get more subscribers? Isn’t it misleading for one to claim to use such products when he/she clearly doesn’t?

This was a great video and thought provoking content. I feel like I’m happy to cut people slack in the most part, but when I feel like people aren’t being genuine, or being unnecessarily mean to others or in recent times where I’ve felt some creators are being tone deaf to their privilege then I just don’t want to support anymore. It’s been a difficult year for everyone and I never begrudge others success but it’s much easier when the creator acknowledges how incredibly lucky they are rather than not be aware at all! Love your channel Charlotte and the way you talk so passionately about subjects, you are a very good speaker. For me it’s dishonesty or people who try and inflict their religious or political views on you. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion whatever the subject and should be respected for that opinion even if you have a different one. Also You Tubers I’m subscribed to and have liked for a while who increasingly have more and more PR promotion in their vlog. I understand that this is how they make a living but when it starts to take over the whole video it’s a big turn off.🥰💜

I began looking for makeup reviews and watched lots of different people then started to feel I guess a connection to some of those people so subscribed to a few channels who’s creators were quirky, fun, knowledgeable and interested. I think I ended up staying with people whom I felt a kinship with and felt if we’d met we would be friends. Another thing I realise has made me support who I have is the support each one of those creators gives to their peers. This seems to be important to me, the way you raise each other up and seem to be genuinely happy for each other’s successes and moved when things aren’t so great. Yourself, Mel, KBJ, Alicia (AKA Kinky Sweat), Michele, Vikeejeah to name a few, all watch each other, support each other and I really love that. So once you’re invested and feel a connection with the person the content doesn’t seem as important, you’re happy to join in with most things and occasionally, when the content really doesn’t interest me, I just don’t watch that video. There has been one channel I have unsubscribed from, though I still watch now and then, and on reflection it’s because everything reviewed is not that great and I just got a bit sick of hearing it. I appreciate honesty in reviews but when nothing meets expectations ever it’s a bit of a downer.

Bullying. Long story which I won't go into length but just to say a well known channel creator with few million subscribers, took umbrage to what a subscriber said and berated her...she apologized and tbh it was pathetic he took that stance..suffice to say his cult followers then began to immediately attack her. I reached out to him and said 'look, you can help to diffuse this' reasons of which, I won't go into. He chose to ignore me and in the end, I gave up but was concerned about the victim and reached out to her. All that she said was, thankyou, you are a kind lady. To this day, if I ever think about it it saddens me - that's why I unsubscribed : (

The only reason there are the huge, problematic RU-vidrs, is that there are millions upon millions of people that are willing to support and subscribe to them. Unfortunately, there are HUGE amounts of people in the world that have the same morals and values as these influencers. These “social media influencers” are just a symptom of a much larger problem. I’ve never subscribed to a problematic RU-vidr because I’m not a problematic person. I follow people who are like minded to me... plain and simple. Love you babes🥰

I recently unsubscribed from a family Vlog. I'd been following them for YEARs but then they started showing how their very young son likes to wear dresses and they seem to be using this as click bate. I believe their son's personal journey should be just that, personal and private. When he is an adult it should be his story to share if he wants to..not his parents.

I don’t watch watch any drama channels - I’ve heard of some of those names but honestly don’t know any of the details. For me it’s negativity- I won’t subscribe to anyone who’s negative or complaining or mean. Life is just too short. The other big one is breaking Covid rules- it’s been a TOUGH year. We have all lost so much and we’re in this together - all of us. The rules are for all of us not just a select few. I’m an Early Childhood Educator and work in kindergarten classes. We’ve had a lot of lockdowns and I’ve been unable to work, I’ve missed time spent with my family, I was unable to spend time with my best friend of 30+ years who passed from cancer in July.....we have all sacrificed. RU-vid has been my escape into a world of humour and positivity. I’m here to learn - makeup, skincare, lifestyle. Good talk! As a brown Muslim American, I very much care what anyone I devout my time to watch or listen too on their stance political. Their views become personal to me. Them supporting trump is supporting to vandalize my life. I believe one reason why numbers do not go down for problematic influencers, is because people agree and support this bad behavior. For goodness sake half of Americans voted for trump both times. So it’s clear views and numbers stay up because bigots love to watch other bigots.

My non-negotiable is when the influencer starts to act like the rules of being a decent person who cares about their content and subscribers and can hold themselves accountable for their own behavior no longer apply to them because they are “famous”. I am almost 57 years old and the people I follow all have one thing in common, they APPRECIATE their subscribers and work hard to create good content and make sure their subscribers feel as if they are part of a community. Bailey Sarian is a great example of someone who has not let follower count change that! When I subbed to her, she was making videos on her bedroom floor and had about 10,000 subscribers. She now has about 5 miilion and she is still the same hysterically funny girl who is awesome at both makeup and story telling as she was then. She appreciates her subscribers as much now as she did then. You, Mel, Kelsey, Kelly, Peter Monn and the Welsh Twins all put out content that is informative, fresh and a joy to watch! You treat your subscribers well and we appreciate it! When I first find a channel, I look at their comment section and I have noticed that all the channels I follow have subscribers who engage with and support each other. If I have a question, not only do you answer, other subs do too and we have fun with each other in the comments. I think that says a lot about the creator when they can support and foster that community spirit!

Since last week I've been asking myself exactly that. A RU-vidr here in my country did a lot of bad things, like, she is in debt to banks, she is not paying her employee, (but still traveling international) she cheated on her husband, she posted a video with her current boyfriend in bed even though she has a small child and people are there applauding and finding it beautiful. She didn't even lose followers. What world is this?

I am in the U.S. I would say politics is a trigger for me. I don't mind listening to different peoples views and opinions, but I do not want to hear someone degrade one candidate or another. I haven't unsubscribed over it, but I have stopped watching a video over it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, views, beliefs, etc., however, that doesn't mean I have to watch or support it. As for politics... I completely agree that the U.S. Presidency does have effects on the rest of the world... but us here in the U.S. are bombarded with information about the president and the election was insane. You can't turn on the news even now hardly without something being said about it. I turn to RU-vid to get a break from all of that.

My triggers to unsubscribe: videos flaunting huge PR hauls, not being honest about sponsorships , using so called mental health issues to get subscribers, begging for likes followers sharing and selling merch, crying and apologies, obviously I don’t subscribe to many influencers😂🤪

I love Wayne Goss, and have learned a lot from him, but his video on vaccination nearly trigged me to unsubscribe. If it were any other person, other than Wayne, I would. I thought it was irresponsible from him.

I'm a physician and I treat covid patients, so I had to be very rational about it, because he is entitled to his opinion and to share his experience even though I don't agree with him.

This is (ONLY) one of the reasons why I adore your channel because I feel that you share more than your love of makeup with us. Obviously we cannot not fully know who you are and that is completely understandable, but I feel that you also share other parts of yourself with us as well. You share your thoughts and opinions on what is going on around you/world. Thank you for doing that because it must be hard to do at times, just putting your self out there. If I do unsubscribe from channels it is because they no longer feel genuine to me or their behavior has changed. For example, I have been watching someone since they first started their channel but the more successful their channel became the more their behavior/views changed and they became this person/channel I now longer recognized.

I personally do not care about politics. I honestly feel that there is a certain standard you tubers feel they have to support because if they don’t, they will get backlash (such as supporting a certain presidential candidate). I dont like it when all they do is sponsor products also. Everyone i follow on you tube has something special and unique about them and when they lose that, they become of no use to me. Your channel is my go-to for all the high end and luxury makeup that I love and the things that you have gone through in your life are similar to my personal situation so I enjoy you on that end also. Your also so honest and real. I also love drugstore makeup, but if you started covering a lot of that content i might feel you were losing your identity because through your videos, luxury is who you are. I always appreciate the content you provide.

Your eye makeup here is so beautiful. I love the green. I unfollow somebody when their politics don't agree with mine. I can take it if it is background noise, but when it becomes overt, I don't care to have it in thrown up in my face all the time. I can hang with somebody if the content is lacking sometimes, because I understand that people have lives outside of their youtube channel. Also, there are channels I think I really like at first, but once I get seeing more videos, I realize it was just the one or two video that I liked. I found your channel from your divorce story, and could empathize personally, you seem near my age, your English accent is so cute, you have a nice face, and I am interested in beauty products and makeup, and so many of your looks are so fresh and gorgeous, and I could learn a thing or two! I have taken so many mental notes on highlighters and foundations I need to try from watching your videos!

I've definitely unsubscribed from a fair few channels I've enjoyed in the past year, primarily because of irresponsible behaviour in the pandemic - not small things like meeting up with 3 people when the rules said you could only have 2, but the flagrant disregard shown by having large, public gatherings from people who should know better... I can't support people who are doing that. In terms of causing direct harm, homeopathy/pseudoscience is another thing I can't support. Again, I don't mean people who see a chiropractor or spray lavender on their pillow to help them sleep, but people pretending that a colon cleanse cured their cancer or encouraging their viewers to drink tea tree oil, that's spreading a really damaging message.

I subscribe and enjoy channels where I appreciate their knowledge or taste but I’ve realized the ones I stick with are the creators that are people I respect (for instance you have a beauty channel but you made that important video about the woman who was murdered and what women are dealing with safety wise in general)

Although I cannot recall a scenario where a RU-vidr I follow crossed a line and/or experienced any "deal-breakers", I have been fortunate to find and follow RU-vidrs with attributes, "clinchers" if you will, who empower, who are positive, who pay it forward, who bring awareness, etc.......a RU-vidr precisely like you. You shared your painful divorce, the story of Caroline Flack, the story of Sarah Everhard, you take a firm position on brands that are not inclusive without being disrespectful, not to mention your wonderful content and brilliant wit. While not responsiveness to the question you posed, I did want to take the opportunity to highlight the flipside of your inquiry. Keep doing what you do because you have got it absolutely right!!!

I’ve definitely unsubbed creators who started discussing politics on their channel when I didn’t support their views. That’s my personal choice not to support them. On the other side I am subbed to other creators whose views I do mostly agree with and see that they get constant grief and harassing comments for their politics. That’s outrageous. If you don’t like what the creator is saying, just unsub. I also unsub if someone has too much drama going on. I find those people distasteful. I also unsubbed from a channel that called anti-racism a political issue. No, it’s not.

If someone was making racist, bullying, discriminatory or mean comments - I don't want to watch that. I also don't want to listen to someone going on about their far right-wing views, their anti-vaxxer opinions. Life is just too short for me to listen to someone who spouts such opinions or is mean and nasty. I wouldn't put up with it in my 'real' life, so I won't engage with such ideas in my 'virtual' life.

This is such an interesting video! I find that a lot of people are drawn to the drama and the outrageous behavior which is why people stay subscribed and keep checking in on the JStars of the world. I am guilty of being uninformed in a lot of instances with certain you tubers just because I am more invested in my nonRU-vid life with working full time and being a full time mom. Sometimes I have to go looking for the explanations if I hear someone casually mention something. I’ve unsubscribed to a lot of “larger” you tubers who do this full time because I find that I can no longer relate to them and I don’t trust them to be genuine. I’d much rather follow creators like you, Morgan Turner, Kelsee Briana Jai, Cate the Great.... creators who are a bit smaller and speak more freely without worrying about how their opinions will affect their YT.

One observation that I’ve made just in my daily life as a white woman married to a Black man ... there are a lot of people whose lives are “unaffected” so to speak by some of these injustices and by the radical behavior. Those people who are not being directly affected seem to be the ones who want to live in their “happy little bubble” and ignore the atrocities that are taking place in the world. They seem to be the people who want people to “keep your opinion to yourself and just do makeup”. This is all my opinion and just things I’ve noticed as I’ve been taking it all in. For me, I’m ok with people making mistakes or sharing differing view points, but I want to know that the people I follow are trying to make a positive change in the world 🌍.

I think I might be an outlier. I'm probably older than the average beauty youtuber's audience. I unfollow instantly if someone has ever said something racist or if they aren't taking the Coronavirus seriously. Those two things for me mean they are terrible people, and why would I want to watch terrible people do anything? No thanks. I won't even watch youtubers who still support racist/irresponsible youtubers. There are SO many content creators on beauty youtube. I don't need to watch douche canoes.

I like people who support freedom of speech, kindness and compassion. I loathe snowflakes or those that believe that just because someone thinks differently they are wrong or should be cancelled. I don't follow those who put down others in anyway. I believe the best way to deal with bad behaviour is not to give it power/support. I think it is wrong to judge people on only one event or action. I am always happy to listen to a point of view, but if it consistently does not help me or I disagree with it = unsubscribe.

I hate when they start out the channel being so real and you love watching the content, then they get more and more subscribers and views, and with that lots and lots of $, all of a sudden they are too good and no longer real!! You can’t trust if they are giving genuine reviews or if they are doing it for the money. They end up being materialistic and truly don’t care about the subscribers anymore! So for me, when I see that out of someone, I’m through and unsubscribe. It’s just disgusting to me and I have seen it on pretty much all of the channels I’ve been watching for years. They have unfortunately all done this :( Not you though, I’ve been watching you forever and you stay true to yourself and I love that about you and your content! So thank you for staying real!! 💕

Lately the biggest reason I’ve been unsubscribing from creators is reckless pandemic behavior. There’s been a lot of it. I’m disabled. I haven’t been able to leave my house in over a year. Their reckless actions affect me and keep me isolated longer. Instant unfollow when they talk about trips or large holiday gatherings. Ableist slurs are another way to lose me. Everyone slips up sometimes, it’s very ingrained, but if every video features words like id*ot or m*ron, I’m done. I don’t have patience for ableism. Or racism. Or any of the isms. I’ve unsubscribed from so many creators this past year.

The major things Racism, sexism are first. Too much entitlement, super flexing as folks call it. If they shade too many other creators. These will all make me stop. Also if they change too much. I am not a person into hearing about babies so i will stop watching for awhile and if they keep up just family stuff on a makeup channel i will unsubscribe as i am happy for them but its not for me, i am like start a new channel. Or if they change and are not relatable to me i may stop unless they do have some content i can watch.

I prefer to follow accounts from creators who have smaller followings, who are within a 10 year range from my age and who focus on the makeup! I don't like too many sponsorship videos either. Just calm, to the point makeup videos with honest reviews. Those are the best. 😊

I will not tolerate racist, homophobic, xenophobic, misogynistic behavior or speech from anyone….I will call them out on it Every. Single. Time. AND I will not support or tolerate anyone who supports another person who are those things. If you can’t treat another human being with basic kindness and respect no matter how they may differ from yourself then you are not a human worthy of my time, money or support. Unfortunately, here in the US we have a political party where too many of the elected officials either are those things OR are willing to “look the other way” when their colleagues blatantly show those traits. That’s the line in the sand for me and I will do everything I can to fight against it.

I’ve unsubscribed from a beauty youtuber/influencer when I noticed that they would say no to purchasing any new products in their “will I buy it?” videos. And it was very clear that they were hoping they would get it in PR. See, I’m all for PR! You ladies work so hard with your videos so if PR comes your way FABULOUS but for this particular person to not want to spend any of her money (made from makeup videos) on new products but is encouraging us to spend our money with reviews is not okay. At least that’s how I see it.

In no particular order- When I feel like I'm back in Jr High and the person is all dramatic and trying to get their viewers on their side (t*ti and others) equally, when the person has a bad or abrasive attitude, is rude or nasty to subscribers, is tone deaf or will not see how what they say is hurtful or offensive (paul*na) of course if they are saying or doing something that could cause harm to someone. And... politics- I don't want to know or hear anyone's thoughts or opinions. My parents always said it's personal, never talk politics unless your looking for bad feelings and an argument 🙄 I'm sure there's more, like a change in interest, etc. But your channel is refreshing and interesting. Your topic videos are thought provoking. Your opinions are well thought out, your product reviews are extraordinarily helpful 🤩 and you always find me the best mascaras and foundations 😀😍😁

Hello Charlotte! I live in Greece and i started following makeup creators in RU-vid when the corona virus started. I want to follow someone who is honest about his job and is not trying to sell me useless products and of course I want to follow someone who is a good person! I loved the video you made about women's and that poor girl who was killed by the policeman. I didnt know about it till you said it and two days later i heard it at news here in Greece! I also love the videos RawbeautyKristi is doing about her life as a mother! That kind of persons i want to follow, people like you,like Mel Thompson, Wayne Goss,people who are doing what they love,live and participate and speak up but are sweet and honest and kind! Maybe it has to do that im 47 years old i have a family and i have found my place in this world! I think many viewers who likes drama are very young and still searching for themselves.Just a thought!!! The people I subscribe to are generally genuine, level-headed, kind, and seem to have good morals. I prefer if politics are left out, otherwise I would subscribe to political channels. However, I do like it if they stand up for the underdog. I cannot stand drama channels. For those creators that have big numbers and get away with bad behavior-it just shows that the subscribers are the same type of person and enjoy the bad behavior and probably wish they could do the same.

This situation always triggered me, we see the biggest content creator do inhuman things, dishonest, racists and more of those behaviors yet their numbers are unafected as you say. I always wondered "does that mean that all of these millions of sucribers who condone this behavior are also just as described" the thought of that scares me because it's alot of millions of people turning a blind eye, not making a decision is making a decision so noone can really say they are neutral... We live in such a sad sad world

It's my impression that the largest follower-ship a lot the names you mentioned have, comes from teenagers or 20-something-year-olds who clearly have a poorly developed moral compass. Personally, I don't do shallow dummies (read all the Charlses, Nikitas and the likes) and spreading of pseudoscience. I used to very much enjoy KVD's makeup but as soon as she revealed herself to be a moron, I couldn't even look at her makeup anymore...sold or gifted away all of it. I actually think KVD did lose control over KVD Beauty because of the anti-vaxxer debacle. So there ya go, one example.

I try to be very conscious of what I am filling my head with, so I will unsubscribe from anyone with hateful or problematic content, no matter what their political or religious affiliations are. However, if one’s political or religious views perpetuate hate or cause a creator to act hatefully, that definitely impacts my decision to subscribe/unsubscribe. Also, over the past year or so I have become very conscious of the fact that each time I watch a video or subscribe to a creator, I am essentially financially backing them because they financially benefit from views, number of subscribers, etc. So recently I have come to think of subscribing and clicking on videos more through the lens of-is this content I would be willing to pay for/is this a creator I am willing to support financially? If the answer is no, especially in regards to financially supporting the creator, then I will unsubscribe and/or refrain from viewing their content. Thank you for addressing this issue! It is interesting and often infuriating to see the divide between “cancel culture” or calling for accountability and the reality that most of those whom we are asking to be held accountable are generally still thriving.

I don’t follow anyone off of their RU-vid channel. In the pre RU-vid days I never cared to follow celebrities personal lives either. So I guess I’m one of those people where as long as the creator sticks to their content on their channel I’m not influenced by what they do in their personal lives. I don’t follow many youtubers or celebs on IG. My IG feed is almost all cats lol. 😺😼 I also don’t sub to most of the people you mentioned, most of the ppl I follow are smaller creators just doing their content and not being problematic.

I’ve unsubscribed from people who after years of watching them finally get bigger which I’m happy for but then they change and I don’t trust their recommendations anymore, that’s when I click off. Another one is on almost every video they love all products shown and never show things that they tried and disliked. I’m not, and never have been, subscribed to any of the “big” creators you mentioned. I don’t follow drama channels. I’m one who loves to see the behind the scenes real people I support on YT-I’m not “just here for the content.” My hard line is ANY kind of discrimination-gender, race, religion, sexual identity/orientation, etc... However, as you point out, I don’t necessarily follow YT creators on other platforms, so I might miss out on obvious discriminatory behavior on other platforms. I am on Instagram, but I only follow my absolute favorite RU-vid creators on Instagram-you are one of them. ❤️ Another reason I might unfollow a YT creator is if they start putting out a bunch of content that isn’t related to why I started following them. (I don’t care how you make a crunchwrap supreme at home. 😂. I know a lot of people will get this reference. I unfollowed her along time ago, but somehow I still managed to come across that video.)

In general I prefer when creators stick to their respective sphere - I have unfollowed people before because I have noticed that some creators, when they reach a certain level, become very lazy and start doing only vlogs and no actual videos on the topic of the channel, which is not the content that I subscribed for..another thing that made me unsubscribe recently from a creator on youtube is when I noticed that they were dishonest in such an obvious way that I couldn't handle it anymore. In this case the influencer that I unfollowed went on a fancy vacation on the other side of the world when they were talking about how 'responsible' they are and that people should take covid seriously, literally in the video prior to the vlog from this vacation...

That's such an interesting topic! I didn't use to care what people did outside of their platform, but I realised I didn't want to support someone in their work if I think they're a toerag. So I've unfollowed people who expressed racist, anti-LQBTQIA, or mysoginistic views, as well as those who can't seem to talk about anything without bringing other influencers down - constructive criticism is one thing, gratuitous bitchiness and drama is quite another. And people who support far-right views - everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course, but I don't want to give my time to people whose political opinions equate hate. And also influencers who always do rave reviews of every single item. It feels dishonest, not all products can be amazing/holy grails!

Hi Charlotte, I will start by telling you why I love your channel. You provide good clean content. Your content is relevant, happy and you are very funny. I also get positive vibes from you. You espouse family values and are a genuine person who clearly supports great causes. Maybe unpopular, but sometimes I unfollow because people change the path of their channel to something I don’t jive with. Like a makeup channel that only talks about pregnancy bc the creator is pregnant (no shade- I just connect over makeup not pregnancy) or when things get too deep with politics or something. I half understand using your platform for your beliefs... but idk I don’t talk about some serious stuff at work and wouldn’t be allowed to and if this is your job... shouldn’t you keep it ‘work’? Idk I can watch the news for politics and social events- I just want my RU-vid peeps to stay entertainers. Almost every time someone has done a “this is the new plan for my channel” vid, I unfollow just because they aren’t relatable when they change their whole Chanel vibe.

A couple of times I have unsubscribed because the creator was rude when I expressed opinion different from theirs. Online one can’t tell the tone of a message, but if there were no offensive words in a comment and I get a nasty “Mind your own business” or something like that I feel... ok, I followed him/her and supported them for years and they make me feel bad. Nope. Most people upload pictures, videos and expect only rave comments all the time which is absolutely impossible. Also I can tell when the creator is truthful and when they say something as it is a trend to say it. Last but not least, if I watch a channel for makeup reviews and at one point I don’t hear anything about products, but watch just constant bragging what expensive thing they will never use they just bought, well that I don’t like. It is just my thing, I am put off by bragging and random flexing of $150 candles with the words “Many people have been asking me about this candle?” Have they? Have they really? (sorry if you have mentioned candles, I don’t mean you).

If a channel used to be vlogs/beauty reviews and now it's only paid ads and promotions, I can't trust them to really like what they're posting about. I know ads area huge way influencers make money but there has to be a balance.

Politics, drama, foul language, and hypocrisy definitely makes me click off. I remember one RU-vidr who basically said people who have my beliefs were invalid and she didn’t care. I immediately unsubscribed and never went back, nor will I. I come to beauty channels for fun and relaxation as an escape from our psychotic world. Too many sponsorships or overly glowing opinions on everything makes me not watch as often.

My reasons for unsubscribing are almost always swearing (I absolutely hate it) and racism. I never watch the most problematic ones because it's already well known what they're about. I don't usually watch anyone under 30.
